Background: The point at which "normal" asymmetry becomes "abnormal" can be defined by an aesthetic limit and a functional limit. The underlying causes are still not fully discovered; the etiology includes congenital disorders, acquired diseases, and traumatic and developmental deformities. Our purpose was to investigate the possible genetic liability in the transmissibility of the asymmetric traits, through an analysis developed by twofold approach: 1) exploring and recording the family history through the use of a specific questionnaire; and 2) examining differences in laterality between the patients and their corresponding parent by a facial analysis.

Methods: A total of 52 Italian subjects (57% females, 43% males; mean age: 11.7 years), showing a clinically detectable asymmetry, were selected. Individuals in the sample were selected according to the diagnosis of facial asymmetry, non-syndromic patients, participation by informed consent, and negative medical history of the maxillo-facial complex. A specifically designed questionnaire was used to investigate the presence of the asymmetric trait in the family. Differences in length between distance from the anthropometric points to the facial midline and to horizontal reference were measured on a frontal facial photograph. For all the subjects recruited the same analysis was performed on the frontal facial photographs of both the parents. A descriptive and interferential statistical analysis was performed on the data.

Results: Concerning the linear measurement, in a high percentage of parent-child pairs there is a correspondence of laterality of asymmetry traits, with a more common relation with the maternal trait. Sixty-five percent of parents with correspondence of laterality reported a positive family history of asymmetry.

Conclusions: The analysis of the obtained data shows that the mother is the parent most involved in the correspondence of laterality. Further analysis would be appropriate to investigate this result.

OBJECTIVESThe Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a new coronavirus detected in China at the end of 2019. Because SARS-CoV-2 is highly infectious due to contamination in the air, there is a high risk of infection in the dental environment which is represents a serious problem for professionals and students (dentistry and dental hygiene). In Italy, since February 23, 2020, the government has suspended all teaching activities of schools and universities.METHODSAn anonymous questionnaire was administered to the students of the degree courses in Dental Hygiene of the Emilia Romagna Region, one of the most affected regions in Italy. The survey was intended to highlight the practical and emotional consequences of the emergency of COVID-19 on educational activities and in the training of students.RESULTSThe survey was sent to the 150 students enrolled in the universities of Bologna, Ferrara and Modena and Reggio Emilia; 141 of them completed it (94%). Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, several surveys have been proposed to measure the impact of this emergency situation on dental professionals; at present, however, there are still no assessments for dental hygiene degree courses, in particular aimed at assessing the psychological impact on students.CONCLUSIONSStudents consider the dental hygienist as a risky profession, while the risk taken by patients is considered as low. Given the concern reported the students, it would be useful to address the issue of proper assessment of risk during the university training of dental hygienists.

BACKGROUNDMost nasal cutaneous malignancies occur on the caudal third of the nose. Commonly, following resective surgery, the surgeon is requested to reconstruct the ala. Small skin defects of the nose may be left healing by secondary intention, although this may sometimes create an unpleasant scar. In the present paper we describe a 1-step reconstruction of the distal area of nasal ala, alar facial sulcus and cheek, with a segmented melolabial interpolated flap.METHODSA 59-year-old man was operated for basal cell carcinoma involving the distal area of nasal ala and alar-cheek sulcus. The reconstruction was performed in 1-stage with a segmented melolabial interpolated flap used to reconstruct the anatomical missing subunits.RESULTSTumor-free margin was larger than the infiltrating region. No postoperative complications were observed.CONCLUSIONSThe melolabial flap is a suitable option for the reconstruction of the nose, although the reconstruction of nasal ala is usually performed in 2-steps: the first one is performed to transfer the tissue and close the defect; the second, is performed to reshape the convexity of the ala and the concavity of the alar facial sulcus. In the present case, we do not perform a 2-steps reconstruction, we just reshaped the flap to perfectly fit the defect in 1-stage. The flap, supplied by collateral arteries from the facial and angular arteries, could be segmented for a better surgical outcome also during the harvesting stage if multiple anatomical subunits have to be reconstructed, with no need of a second surgical step that could be frustrating for the patient.

PURPOSEThe aim of this review was to assess efficacy and acceptance of aesthetic Zirconia Crowns (ZCs) compared to the traditionally employed Stainless Steel Crowns (SSCs) for primary teeth restoration.METHODSA comprehensive literature search was completed for the relevant keywords in Scopus and Medline databases. Resulting article abstracts and full texts were screened to determine final inclusion.RESULTSEighteen articles were included from the initial search. There is still little evidence to support the use of one type of crowns over another for primary teeth, in particularly for ZCs, lately introduced in paediatric restoration. The gold standard for restoring decayed primary teeth is still represented by SSCs, despite the growing importance of the aesthetic issue related to their use. Aesthetic ZCs resulted in having adequate properties to be employed for the treatment of decayed primary teeth, such as mechanical resistance, limited plaque adhesion, wear behaviour and natural appearance.CONCLUSIONSThere is still a paucity of literature clinically evaluating the efficacy of ZCs for primary teeth restoration, but they can be considered a promising alternative to SSCs. This field of research has to be more deeply explored to improve dental care in children affected by early childhood caries.

INTRODUCTIONThe buccal fat pad also known as Bichat's fat pad has the same histological characteristics as fats located in other regions of the body, however, its particularity is the wrapping of a fibrous capsule that prevents it from being metabolized. Bichectomy is the surgical procedure that partially removes oral fat, consequently it is possible to observe the volumetric reduction of the lower third of the face and the definition of contours and angulations, making the face aesthetically pleasing. However, this procedure is related to several potentially serious complications in the postoperative period due to the surgical technique.EVIDENCE ACQUISITIONA bibliographic search was carried out based on scientific articles, published in English and Portuguese, between 2015 and 2019. The search was carried through the electronic databases PubMed, SciELO, Medline, Bireme and Lilacs with the keywords "bichectomy"; "Buccal fat pad"; "Buccal adipose tissue" and "Bichectomy and complications". Were included articles that reported the postoperative period and complications.EVIDENCE SYNTHESISThe anatomical knowledge of this region is essential to avoid iatrogenesis in surgical procedures, which can result in temporary or permanent sequelae. Among the complications of greater complexity in bichectomy there are: trismus, hemorrhages, facial infections, lesion of the duct of the parotid gland and facial paralysis, however common complications that are related to any surgical procedure can occur, such as edema and hematoma, despite being considered a technically simple procedure.CONCLUSIONSBichectomy is a quick and technically simple aesthetic-functional procedure, but it presents unpredictable risks of potentially serious complications.

OBJECTIVESItaly has been the first affected country in the western haemisphere by SARS-COV 2 with over 200.000 cases during the first months o the pandemica. To control the spread of the virus, the whole country was placed under lockdown with limitations in the circulation of people and vehicles from March 2020 to the first half of the month of May.MATERIALS AND METHODSWe aimed to analyze the incidence and type of facial traumas referred to our tertiary care hospital during the months of Italy lockdown due to SARS - COVID 2 spread compared with those during the same months of 2019 to determine eventual variations in the incidence, type and causes of trauma.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONSDuring the 2 months of COVID-19-related lockdown, a dramatic decrease in facial trauma patients was observed at our tertiary care hospital with a shift toward older age ranges. Regarding the causes of trauma, the largest percentage reduction was found in road, sports and work accidents; this percentage reduction was not found in aggressions. A small increase in the percentage was also found regarding surgical indications, likely because more severe cases were more prone to be referred to the hospital despite the fear of being infected.

The year 2020 will be remembered around the world for the coronavirus pandemic. The better known coronavirus disease COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a type of coronavirus that is transmitted between individuals through the droplets produced by infected people when they exhale, cough or sneeze, or by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their eyes the nose or mouth. The pandemic has activated all those measures that provide for a state of emergency with consequent remodeling of health facilities in cases of urgency that cannot be deferred.METHODSIn this work, a path within a public or private medical facility was highlighted, using individual protective devices for the patient, establishing behaviors that can reduce the spread of the virus.RESULTSThe COVID-19 path has allowed the health personnel and the staff of the study to be able to work in peace as there is the perception of the total containment of the spread of the virus.CONCLUSIONSCoronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a coronavirus type transmitted through droplets produced by infected people when they cough, sneeze or exhale. Our proposal in dictating the sequence and types of protective devices to be worn by patients minimizes the contagion between patients in a professional healthcare office and is applicable for any type of infectious emergency.
