Objective: This study aimed to investigate the macrostructure of teeth restored with different dental materials after thermal inversion. Material and methods: The sample consisted of 16 bovine mandibular incisors. Half of the teeth underwent class V restorations with amalgam (Amalgam GS 80, SDI Dental Ltd., Dublin, Ireland), while the other half was restored with composite (Charisma, Kulzer GmbH, Hanau, Germany). During 30 minutes the teeth were exposed to heating at 100 o C, 200 o C, 300 o C and 400 o C. Next, cooling was performed in half of the sample using a fan (slowly) and in the other half using water (quickly). Qualitative analysis was performed to detect eventual macroscopic alterations in the teeth, especially considering: I) the color of the restoration; II) the structure of the restoration; III) fitting of the restoration in the cavity; IV) main alteration of the restoration from the original form; V) main alteration of the tooth from the original form. Results: Different macroscopic alterations were observed after slow and quick cooling of the amalgam after heating at 200 o C, 300 o C and 400 o C, while for the composite the alterations were detected only after heating at 400 o C. Conclusion: Optimal human identification performances and forensic reports must consider the eventual macroscopic alterations in dental restorations and teeth detected in charred bodies retrieved from the water.

Emergency situations that may lead to the death of an individual, even when there is no cause directly related to the treatment, occur with certain frequency in dental offices. The purpose of this study was to report a case that involved an inquiry and police investigation related to the death of a female patient after the injection of two ampoules of 2% lidocaine anesthetic for dental treatment. The patient died despite assistance given by the professional and by SAMU (Urgent Mobile Medical Service). The legal authorities inquired into the possibility that the amount of anesthetic may have caused the patient’s death. However, it was proven that the amount of anesthesia was adequate, and the recommendation of the Public Prosecutor's Office was for closure of the case because of lack of evidence justifying occurrence of the crime

Introduction: Physical violence became an important global problem in the last decades. This scenario is reflected in the increasing jurisprudence. In specific situations, perpetrators and victims of physical violence may inflict an especial patterned injury named bitemark. Knowing the case characteristics in lawsuits involving human bites and bitemarks is important to understand and encourage the role of Forensic Dentists as expert witness for bitemark analysis in Court. Objectives: The present study aimed to assess the jurisprudence to screen lawsuits that involve human bites and bitemarks in order to extract characteristics that could support research and practice of bitemark analysis. Material and methods: A systematic search was conducted in an open access jurisprudence system with the keywords “bite” and “bitemark”. Full-texts of lawsuits were selected and underwent data extraction. Results: A total of 2488 lawsuits were detected, from which 1125 were eligible in the present study. The lawsuits dated between 1997 (n=13, 1.15%) and 2015 (n=202, 17.95%). Forensic expertises were performed in 641 (56.97%) lawsuits, but the identity of suspects was investigated only in 3 (0.26%) cases. Conclusions: An increasing trend of lawsuits involving human bites and bitemarks was observed. Forensic Dentists must be aware of the current bitemark scenario as well the limitations inherent to bitemark analysis to face casework in the field. The present study provides evidence to encourage major education in bitemark analysis.

Resultados: Das 108 medicoes, duas demonstraram maior correlacao com a idade: comprimento pulpar do ILI, no corte sagital (R2=0,273), e largura pulpar no nivel C do 1PMI, no corte coronal (R2=0,289).
