ABSTRACT The eggs of Wetanema hula, were studied with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Numerous pores were observed across the entire eggshell surface, making a regular pattern. The shape and diameter of the pores were not uniform, and no signs of an operculum were observed. The eggs of W. hula are most similar in surface topography to those of Blatticola blattae. Uterine eggs of W. hula differ from those of W. ripariae in having a larger width and less pronounced flattening on one side.

ABSTRACT Invasive carnivores are threatening the indigenous fauna of Aotearoa, but impacts vary with time, space and species. Conservation strategies require knowledge of predator-prey dynamics specific to different ecosystems and allowing for long-term guild shifts. To build this knowledge, we model the survivorship of the kea, a long-lived, ground-nesting parrot with an expansive species-range, using a dataset spanning two decades (1998–2021) and spanning several forest-dominated South Island montane ecosystems. Kea survivorship was lower in eastern ecosystems compared to western ones, depressed during carnivore irruptions, and elevated after predator control. Kea of all ages and both sexes fell prey to stoats and feral cats whilst foraging and roosting, not whilst nesting. Stoat depredation happened in all ecosystems, whereas feral cats featured more in eastern ones. Annual survivorship was high in most contexts (adults > 90%, juveniles > 70%), but a peak in stoat and feral cat predation in eastern ecosystems during 2020–2021 reduced adult survival to <60%. This predation peak followed a rodent population crash, the primary prey of carnivores in eastern beech forests. We conclude that predator impacts on kea are concentrated into post-mast years. Recommendations for management are provided.

ABSTRACT Caridean prawns show five different types of mating systems and may show specific morphological characters depending on the reproductive strategy, resulting in sexual dimorphism between males and females. The present study aimed to analyse the sexual dimorphism in the freshwater prawns Macrobrachium pantanalense and Macrobrachium iheringi, two species that presumably have different mating systems. Our predictions are that the pattern of sexual dimorphism shows differences between the species, which may be related to its mating system and sexual behavior. Sexual dimorphism was analysed by geometric morphometrics using the carapace (CA), second pleonal pleuron (SPP) and cheliped propodus (CP). The geometric morphometrics analysis showed differences between the sexes in the shape of CA and SPP of M. pantanalense. In M. iheringi, differences between sexes were observed only in the shape of SPP. The sexual dimorphism in the size of CA and CP diverged between the species, while in M. pantanalense the females showed the largest sizes, in M. iheringi the males showed the largest sizes. The patterns observed between size and shape of structures in each species reinforce the presence of relationships between mating system and sexual dimorphism in caridean prawn species. http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:03DE0D3E-598A-4692-9771-79EA449D92EA

ABSTRACT Throughout history, human movements have been a mechanism by which species are introduced to new environments. Although these introductions may sometimes be unintended, they have often occurred through organised effort and led to successful establishment outside a species’ native range. The common myna (Acridotheres tristis) is an invasive bird species that has successfully established globally, including on New Zealand’s North Island. To better understand the establishment of this invasive species, historical records of the myna’s introduction and subsequent distribution were compiled and analysed. We determine that mynas were introduced into New Zealand repeatedly between the 1860s and 1880s, originating from stock acclimatised in Australia with strong links to Melbourne. Additionally, we track the changing distribution of the myna across New Zealand, allowing us to create a detailed timeline. Our findings are discussed in the context of the motivations behind myna introduction, and public response to their introduction and spread.

ABSTRACT Discus (Symphysodon spp.) is a popular freshwater ornamental fish with high market value due to its extraordinary skin pigmentation. The molecular mechanisms that govern skin colouration have yet to be identified. Six skin samples from wild discus were collected in the D1 (dorsal intense black bar stripe), D2 (ventral lighter bar stripes and orange carotenoid spots) and D3 (posterior without stripe nor spot) regions of wild discus for transcriptomic profiling and analysis. Differential analysis was conducted in 3 pair-wise comparisons, D1vsD3, D2vsD3 and D2vsD1. The results demonstrated that the melanin synthesis-associated genes (ERBB4, ADCY9, WNT2, 14-3-3 proteins and TSPAN genes) were upregulated in D1 and D2 regions, whereas carotenoids metabolism-associated genes (PLIN2, AHCY, RETSAT, STARD10, TTC39B and RDH1 genes) were uniquely expressed in D2 region. Amino acid metabolism-related pathways were enriched in both the D1 and D2 regions. MAPK pathway enrichment was detected merely in the D1 region, while various transporter activities were enriched in the D2 region. Further investigations speculated the key regulator roles of GNAQ, ADCY9, 14-3-3 and TSPAN genes in black vertical bar formation. This is the first fundamental report on discus skin pigment genes that could be extended into more detailed studies in the future.
