Pashmina is one of the most expensive natural fabrics in the world, and yet the lives of those who produce this rare fibre in India is very tough. The Changpa of eastern Ladakh and western Tibet have for centuries supplied the fabled Kashmiri shawl industry with its essential raw material - pashm. However, many nomadic and semi-nomadic herder families seem disillusioned with their traditional lifestyles and are migrating to settlements near Leh town to become masons, contractors or tour guides. This migration will have significant socio-cultural, economic, strategic and ecological ramifications. Efforts are being made to give them reasons to continue with their age-old practices. How do we ensure that ecological concerns are addressed so as to arrive at sustainable growth for all concerned? In this article we discuss these general issues in the particular context of Ladakh and put forward some solutions.

Bedouins, Not 'Egyptians': Characteristics and Features of the Bedouin Tribes of Sinai

The Bedouin tribes of Sinai have experienced a range of interventions in their way of life that have brought them into contention with different states and state agents. The self-identity of Bedouin tribes in Sinai has been drawn upon in struggles between Bedouin and governing authorities, which in recent history have included two empires and two nation-states. Even now, the Bedouin of Sinai exhibit minimal ties with the religious and political authorities of Egypt, a continuation of trends stretching back to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This article examines different facets of contemporary Sinai Bedouin life and explores the complexity of identity of the Sinai Bedouin through their traditional practices, including oral traditions that provide them with the counter-narratives by which they define themselves.

Anticipation and Contestation along the Lapsset Infrastructure Corridor in Kenya

The Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) corridor project is intended to traverse northern counties of Kenya, link with other corridors in Africa and attract investors. This article explores the dynamics of anticipation and how they relate to contestation over land, compensation and the benefits of development along the corridor area, finding that a variety of actors have different visions and capacities to position themselves favourably to achieve economic benefits from the corridor. Anticipatory behaviours may be both private and collective, the latter consisting of group claims on land prompted by the desire to block private actors, and also to prevent economic or political dominance by other ethnic groups. Thus both private and collective anticipation may exacerbate inequalities and lead to conflict along lines of ethnicity and class. Further, conflict may be ignited in an opportunistic manner to remove other potential beneficiaries, which is itself an example of anticipation.

Understanding the Representation of Pastoralism in Livestock-Related Climate Adaptation Policies in Ghana and Nigeria: a Review of Key Policy Documents
IF 0.9 Q2 ANTHROPOLOGY Pub Date : 2022-03-01 DOI: 10.3197/np.2022.260105

Within Nigeria and Ghana, pastoralists face increasing adversity from climate change and marginalisation due to a complex combination of factors, further amplified by highly sensitive and increasingly violent conflicts with farmers. While climate change exacerbates the vulnerability of pastoralists, this remains largely unaccounted for in current Nigerian and Ghanaian pastoral livestock policy. Employing a thematic analytical approach, the article assesses the representation of pastoralists within climate change adaptation strategies in Ghana and Nigeria, and the impact of this on their livelihoods. Our findings indicate that pastoralists are poorly represented in current policy, which is inclined towards transitions to intensive sedentary systems. This risks enhancing the vulnerability of pastoralists to climate impacts by constraining mobility. We conclude that improved clarity on how these policies account for climate change in transitioning pastoral systems into intensive sedentary systems could encourage compliance and buy-in by pastoralists and farmers. It is recommended that future livestock policies address climate change and bolster producer mobility to better support the livelihoods of pastoralists.
