This article reviews the anatomy and surgical approaches for treating fractures of the mandibular condyle with plate and screw fixation. Advantages and disadvantages of the preauricular, submandibular, intraoral, retromandibular, and rhytidectomy approaches are presented.

The Cytobrush Plus cell collector (cytobrush) was compared with the wooden tongue depressor during oral exfoliative cytology. The degree of patient discomfort, the convenience to the clinician, and the quantity and distribution of epithelial cells collected were evaluated. Two-factor analysis of variance and parametric and nonparametric analyses were performed. Because of the favorable findings revealed in this study, we recommend that the cytobrush be considered for use when obtaining diagnostic cytologic smears from the oral mucosa.

Central hemangioma of the mandible is a relatively rare condition; when it occurs, the clinical and radiographic presentation are often nonspecific. A proper diagnosis can be made with a high level of clinical suspicion, and imaging studies such as angiography can confirm the suspicion that a vascular lesion exists and can contribute valuable information to the preoperative data base. We report three cases of central hemangioma of the mandible demonstrating the variability of signs and symptoms and review the various treatment alternatives in the literature. We suggest that the treatment of choice for this entity is surgery, including reconstruction as necessary.

The form of the anterior mandible in 45 patients was assessed before, immediately after, and 1 year after genioplasty. A specific, consistent pattern of bone apposition and resorption was observed after advancement genioplasty. A consistent but inverse apposition-resorption pattern was observed after reduction genioplasty. In view of the observed pattern of bony change, it is recommended that fixation devices for genioplasty be placed in areas of future bone deposition.

The use of internal rigid fixation with plates in the treatment of facial fractures continues to increase in popularity. The principal advantage is in avoiding the use of maxillary mandibular fixation (intermaxillary fixation), thus enabling early return of function. However, there are clear guidelines for their use and technique of placement. A case is reported that demonstrates several avoidable complications in the use of compression plates and outlines the principles for the correct use of bone plates in mandibular fractures.
