Shakespearean criticism has mainly focused on the study of his characters and their stories, mainly ignoring the places where the plots occur. Yet, in the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras the world frontiers, already altered due to medieval travellers’ books, expanded enormously owing to the sea voyages, imposing another cartography on the globe. The theatre, in an age lacking means of information, spread the news regarding the new lands which began to appear on the stage. This essay discusses how the contemporary geography influenced Shakespeare shown in the language of some comedies; as to the tragedies, which occur in the distant past, he incorporated the geographic expansion into his creative process resulting in memorable dramatic spaces and other possibilities of reading.

Thirty-five years separate the publications of Machado de Assis’ Dom Casmurro from Graciliano Ramos’ S. Bernardo. Despite the distance in time, these novels denounce the same rigid model of female representation which conceives the woman as subordinate to the will of man. Due to their behavior, Capitu and Madalena are rejected by the authoritarian speech of their husbands-narrators. The objective of this article is to show how these two novels question this macho model, as they attribute great importance to the two female characters.
Machado de Assis的《Dom Casmurro》和Graciliano Ramos的《S.

The short-stories “The thing around your neck” and “Jumping Monkey Hill”, both by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, are analyzed concerning representations of the African continent, as well black characters, especially the woman, that break with cultural and static patterns in the field of literature. The theoretical basis is provided by Cultural Studies, more specifically Postcolonialism and Feminism, by authors as: Brah (2002), Davis (2017), and Spivak (2010). We can understand, in general, that the perception about the African continent and its inhabitants continues to be ruled by binarism and is stereotyped. Therefore, studies that shed light on such issues, focussing on the multiplicity present in these spaces, as well as on feminine identity become relevant.

Conceição Evaristo is an exemplary author of Afro-Brazilian literature and can be considered one of the greatest representatives of this genre within the country. His books deal with excluded and marginalized minorities, bringing to focus life experiences of discriminated individuals, who face prejudice, inequalities and extreme situations every day. Taking into account the importance of this theme and the works of the author as a whole, this article aims to recognize how the concepts of identity and memory are related in Memory Alleys (2006), contributing in the construction of characters and plot. As concerns the theoretical apparatus, we selected critical perspectives by Candau, Hall, Todorov, Pêcheux and Le Goff. As a result, we came to the conclusion that memory and identity are key concepts for the formulation and understanding not only of Memory Alleys’s narrative but also of its characters, the choices they make and the directions they take.
