The results of the design and experimental investigation of a waveguide ferrite phase shifter with magnetic memory for 3 mm-wave phased antenna arrays are discussed. The phase shifter is based on a longitudinally magnetized ferrite rod and operates with circularly polarized waves. The system of magnetization includes a coil and a system of ferrite conductors. This construction of the phase shifter provides a fast response time, small energy consumption for the operational cycle, and high activity and Q-factor.

Mutual fluctuations between two carriers in a broadband millimeter-wave communication system may be observed from the heterodyne signal spectrum of the carriers. Laboratory measurements made on equipment developed for local multipoint distribution system (LMDS) applications indicated the degradation in the heterodyne spectrum was mainly in the form of increased background noise with L(f) close to the beat-tone carrier essentially unaffected. Synchronization and orthogonal relationship between the carriers are therefore well preserved by the millimeter-wave link. This property is a key requirement for supporting modulation schemes with high spectral efficiency.

Local transformations of mixed cubic/hexagonal BN films under the action of electric field of STM probe have been observed. If a magnitude of voltage pulses U/sub bias/ exceeded a threshold value, the STM action results in a local conducting protrusion with a height of the 10% film thickness, and a lateral size of about the film thickness. The film was peeled off the substrate at high voltages. It was noted that the films exposed to X-rays which shown more elastic properties. Possible mechanism of the observed film transformations is discussed.
