In the past two decades many substances of natural or synthetic origin were studied as potential alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) and some of them, particularly immunomodulators (IMs) and nutraceuticals (NCs), have shown to be capable of stimulating functions of the immune system and improving general health. At the same time, they were shown to be harmless for animals and the environment. Promising results have been obtained with natural clay minerals, zeolites among which clinoptilolite (CPL) is the best known as zootechnical and biomedical feed ingredient widely reported in scientific literature and used in farm animal nutrition. CPL has a potential to replace AGP due to its unique anti-bacterial properties, safety and efficacy as dietary supplement in food animals unifying potentials of an IM and NC. Currently, there are many reasons for CPL utilization in animal biotechnology and veterinary medicine because of it’s detoxificating, antioxidant, hemostatic, anti-diarrheic, growth-promoting and immunostimulating properties. Also, in human medicine it is an adjuvant in immunodeficiency states, oncology (after chemotherapy and radiotherapy) or reducer of radioactive elements. The aims of this review were to compile and discuss scientific data on safety and efficiency of nutritive modulation by dietary CPL (and other zeolites) as an alternative to AGP in animals of veterinary importance In particular the aim is to analyse its potentials and limitations in cattle regarding metabolic and endocrine status, oxidative stress and systemic/local inflammatory responses involved in reproductive and metabolic disorders of dairy cows. Altogether, these analyses will contribute to objective validation of practical significance of CPL as a novel feed additive able to maintain and improve health, fertility and performance in cattle production.

Effect of Amygdalin on the treatment and recurrence of endometriosis in an experimental rat study 杏仁核对大鼠子宫内膜异位症治疗和复发的影响

Background: Endometriosis is an aggressive disorder and associated with infertility, pelvic pain and intra-abdominal adhesions in women of reproductive age. Women with endometriosis has the potential risk of recurrence ranging from 21.5% in two years to 50% in five years after recovery period. Therefore, there is a certain requirement for new drugs as an alternative therapy to the current ones. Aim: The aim of the present study is to compare the effects of amygdalin and leuprolide acetate on endometriosis development and recurrence in rats. Study Design: Animal experiment Methods: A total of 30 adult female rats were enrolled. Induction of endometriosis was performed by implanting endometriotic focci on the peritoneal side of the abdominal wall. Before amygdalin or leuprolide acetate treatment one of the implant was removed for histopathological analysis, and rats were randomly divided into three groups. Saline (Group 1), amygdalin (Group 2), and leuprolide acetate (Group 3) were administered for three weeks. After treatment, one of the remaining three implants was excised for histopathological evaluation, and all treatments were terminated. Estradiol was given after the estradiol induction for the recurrence of endometriosis. Rest of the implanted tissues were removed, then all rats were euthanised. The implant volumes, histopathological injury and fibrosis levels were observed. Results: The endometriotic foci volumes in Group 2 and Group 3 were significantly lower than in Group 1 (p = 0.001, p = 0.002, respectively). The histopathological injury scores and fibrosis levels were not significantly different among the groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The present study showed that amygdalin has an evident effect in the treatment of endometriosis.

Background and Purpose: The genus Convolvulus (Convolvulaceae) is distributed worldwide. Several species are used as ornamental plants, and one of them is C. sabatius, a native species in Magreb (Africa) and Italy. For Croatia, it was reported just as a cultivated plant. After six years of continuous monitoring, we present here the first locality of its subspecies C. sabatius subsp. mauritanicus, outside of cultivation. Materials and Methods: The floristic survey of the city of Kastela was conducted during the summer of 2011 and 2016, and the site was geocoded by a GPS device. The population of the new alien Convolvulus taxon was continuously observed for six years. Results: The new alien Convolvulus taxon was recorded in 2011 in the settlement Rudine of Kastel Novi (Dalmatia), on an anthropogenic meadow. At first, it was determined as C. sabatius, and it was its first finding outside of cultivation. In 2016 the plant was more precisely determined as C. sabatius subsp. mauritanicus. From a few individuals observed in 2011, after six years the population of the new alien taxon enlarged its size, and in 2016 covers an area of approximately 6 m2. Conclusion: Due to our observation that this plant on the surrounding areas of our locality Rudine is constantly planted, we assumed that C. sabatius subsp. mauritanicus, is just a casual alien plant. However, due to the enlargement of its population and weed “behevior” in similar climatic areas of Europe and Australia, further monitoring of the locality is recommended, and possible eradication measures in the future, as well.

Antibacterial activity of phyto-mediated silver nanoparticles developed from Melia azedarach 苦楝植物介导银纳米颗粒的抗菌活性研究

BACKGROUNDː Nanoparticles formed by plant extracts present a good alternative of existing antibiotics to compete with the resistant strains of bacteria. Antioxidants present in plants synthesize the nanoparticles from metal salt and also cap them. METHODSː In the present study, Melia azedarach fresh leaves were extracted with water. These extracts were reduced by adding silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) solution separately. Plant extract in different concentration was used to develop nanoparticles with constant strength of salt solution. Color change of extracts represented the development of silver nanoparticles due to reduction of silver ions to form silver nanoparticles. Absorbance of reaction mixtures were determined by UV Vis spectrophotometry. Further antimicrobial activity of these nanoparticles was tested against Borditella pertussis and Xanthomonas axonopodis by agar well diffusion method. RESULTSː Maximum absorbance was noticed between 400-500 nm. EDX analysis proved the presence of silver ions and SEM analysis showed size and shape of nanoparticles (105 nm). Silver nanoparticles developed from water extract of M. azedarach exhibited maximum inhibition zones (25.4±0.36) and (47.2±0.25) against Borditella pertussis and Xanthomonas axonopodis respectively. CONCLUSIONSː The conclusion was established that silver nanoparticles from M. azedarach revealed enhanced antibacterial activity with comparison to pure plant extract and silver nitrate solution and can be used in different antibacterial products.

Antioxidants present in plants synthesize the nanoparticles from metal salt and also cap them. METHODSː In the present study, Melia azedarach fresh leaves were extracted with water. These extracts were reduced by adding silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) solution separately. Plant extract in different concentration was used to develop nanoparticles with constant strength of salt solution. Color change of extracts represented the development of silver nanoparticles due to reduction of silver ions to form silver nanoparticles. Absorbance of reaction mixtures were determined by UV Vis spectrophotometry. Further antimicrobial activity of these nanoparticles was tested against Borditella pertussis and Xanthomonas axonopodis by agar well diffusion method. RESULTSː Maximum absorbance was noticed between 400-500 nm. EDX analysis proved the presence of silver ions and SEM analysis showed size and shape of nanoparticles (105 nm). Interleukin-6 in cardiac surgery 白细胞介素-6在心脏手术中的应用

Background and Purpose: Interleukin (IL)-6 is a multi-functional pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine, and it has been a reliable biomarker of cardiac function status and myocardial damage. However, the characteristics of IL-6 expressions in the cardiac surgical patients have not been comprehensively described. The purpose of this review is to present the current knowledge on the role of IL-6 in the field of cardiac surgery. Materials and Methods: Medical literature of IL-6 in cardiac surgical disorders of recent 3 decades were carefully collected as studying materials, and comprehensively reviewed and analyzed. Results: Plasma IL-6 was significantly elevated 1 hour and peaked 3-6 hours after the start of cardiopulmonary bypass with a gradual decrease constant maintenance thereafter. No significant differences were found between patients with biological and mechanical heart valve replacements between on-poump and off-pump coronary artery bypass, or between cyanotic and acyanotic congental heart patients. The elevation of IL-6 was higher in mitral valve replacement than in coronary artery bypass grafting patients and in non-heart transplantation than heart transplantation patients. Il-6 was involved in the pathogenesis of pulmonary artery hypertension and infective endocarditis, and predicted adverse cardiac events, such as coronary graft occlusion, aortic dissection progression, and cardiac myxoma recurrence. Conclusions: In cardiac surgical patients, the expression of IL-6 reflects the inflammatory situation of the patients and also predicts their prognosis. The higher elevation of IL-6 in mitral valve replacement and in non-heart transplantation might be attributed to cardiotomy suction, and to lack of sterioid use. Early administrations with steroid, α 2 -adrenergic agonists, incretin hormones, or ischemic conditioning could reduce the inflammatory response and prevent from pertinent postoperative complications. Anesthetic agents and technique of choices may also reduce immune reactions and lower circulating cytokines. Extracorporeal IL-6 removal facilities have been successfully applied in clinical practice. The potential alternative therapies with IL-6 antibodies might be further developed and used in such patients for preventing myocardial apoptotic processes.

Background and purpose: The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys, is native to East Asia and has recently become an invasive pest in North America and Europe. It is considered a nuisance pest as well as a significant economic pest causing damage to a wide range of crops. Following its first record in Budapest, Hungary, in 2013, repeated reports confirmed its establishment in the country. In late summer 2016, growers began to complain about stink bug damage to dry bean and forced green hot pepper, both grown in the vicinity of a site in Budapest where BMSB had been present for at least the past three years. The aims of our study were to identify if the damage in green hot pepper and dry bean has been caused by BMSB and to estimate the level of the damage. Materials and methods: We collected 50 dry bean pods (‘Etna’) randomly from a 0.1 ha large plot on 2 September, and we checked the seeds in each pod for the symptoms of feeding in the laboratory. To assess the rate of damaged hybrid green hot pepper (‘Daras’) fruits, 100 fruits picked by the grower in a greenhouse were studied in situ on 8 September for damage from stink bugs. A vacuum device was used to collect stink bug samples from both sites. Results: We found damaged seeds in 47 dry bean pods (94%), and all the green hot pepper fruits (100%) were affected. We identified BMSB as the causal organism in both cases. Conclusions: Our results call the attention to the severe threat posed by BMSB to the European crop production.
