A unique experimental program that involves the integration of marketing research and engineering design for better product development is presented and discussed. The new multidisciplinary and integrative approach to solving real life problems at the undergraduate level addresses two goals: (a) to offer undergraduate students an opportunity to understand the process of better product development by designing their own products; and (b) to help universities enter into partnerships with local industries and government laboratories to facilitate the problem of technology transfer together.

Data compression techniques in image compression for multimedia systems 多媒体系统图像压缩中的数据压缩技术

Currently the digital video interface (DVI), Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), and Motion Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) are the three compression techniques that are widely used. Many of these algorithms employ the discrete cosine transform (DCT) because of its excellent energy compaction to achieve data compression. Even with the amount of intensive computations used with the DCT algorithm, grayscale images still require millions of computations. Extending this to color images or moving images, require billions of computations. Data compression techniques for multimedia systems is a step towards reducing the intensity of computations employing fast transform algorithms.

In building today's electronic products, many of the sub-systems are designed and manufactured in various places around the world. They only come together at a top-level assembly plant. Here, the author argues that it is most important that designers take necessary steps to develop a sound prototyping process at the concept stage for new product designs. This will ensure that when products come together from several remote assembly locations, less re-design efforts will have to be expended on "after-the-fact" thermal management of the entire system. The underlying goal with all thermal modeling is to develop the most economic cooling system that delivers the most value with the highest reliability. Those companies that can effectively and unerringly merge subsystems together seamlessly will create the final product that is the most competitive.

The Rivest, Shamir, Adleman (RSA) algorithm [Rivest et al. 1978] is one of a class of cryptographic algorithms that utilize very large precision arithmetic. Multiplication, division, addition and subtraction typically need to be implemented with 512 or more bits precision-and the need for more precision grows as computational processing speeds increase. Digital signal processors are one natural way to create fast cryptographic systems because they have hardware optimized for fast arithmetic. The 56300 family of DSPs possesses characteristics that are well suited for this type of algorithm. These DSPs operate on 24 bit word sizes, and can do multiply accumulates in one clock cycle. We consider how to effectively apply these properties to obtain a fast implementation of algorithms used for RSA cryptography. The presentation is in three parts. The first section presents the RSA algorithm, with emphasis on the implementation approach use. The second section consists of a brief discussion of some salient architectural features of the 56300 family. Finally, we combine these two to obtain efficient implementations of the critical sections of the RSA algorithm.

The TECOMAC system provides a unique approach to data compression and security using its own proprietary and patented algorithm. Traditional data compression techniques use generalized learning algorithms that assume little or nothing about the data with which they are dealing. As a consequence, these traditional algorithms are very often ineffective for use in telecommunications. The TECOMAC provides high compression across LAN/WAN connections. TECOMAC systems are optimized for superior performance across satellite and terrestrial lines. These systems are designed to provide expanded bandwidth through the use of its patented and unique data compression technology. By using protocols like TCP/IP, FTP and Telnet, and then taking all that work a step further to create Web browsers and GUIs or "graphical user interfaces" which run on any platform and yet are simple to use, we actually created a dream come true. A World Wide-Web revolution! Now that the Internet has caught on and Web browsers have made viewing data and data transfers appear seamless to the user, the Motorola Intellectual Property department is taking advantage of this technology.

For many companies, Internet commerce means taking credit card orders from customers shopping electronic catalogs on the World Wide Web. For others Internet commerce means dealing electronically with clients and suppliers, as an alternative to private, leased-line electronic document interchange (EDI) over value added networks or VANs). This use of the Internet is sometimes called a virtual private network (VPN) or tunneling. A third area of Internet commerce, which overlaps both of the others and includes areas largely unexplored, is digital authentication (of anything from contracts and invoices to photographs and sound bites). The issues involved in Internet commerce affect companies large and small. The author discusses some of the security problems in Internet commerce together with prospects for the future.

in this paper, the bus architecture of microcomputers based on the Intel 80/spl times/86 family of microprocessors will be explored. Specifically, the Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) will be introduced and its role in subsequent architecture designs will be examined. Bus architectures including the Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA), Micro-Channel Architecture (MCA), Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) Local Bus Architecture, and Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) standards will be analyzed. The dependence of early bus designs on the host processor, as well as the effect of bus architecture design development of hardware and software will be discussed.

Tracking electric vehicles with GPS 用GPS追踪电动汽车

There are several cross-country solar and electric vehicle racing events conducted around the world which demonstrate the capabilities of the cars. The vehicles travel on rural and urban highways, blending in with conventional cars. The vehicles in the event are judged on speed, range, efficiency and performance. The organizers of the events have developed several different methods to track and time the vehicles in order to determine the winner. Usage of an automated process enhances the quality of the scores, reduces the amount of vehicle management work and increases the safety of the event. The use of a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system with amateur radio communications is one approach in automating the scoring process. Organizers of the SunDay Challenge-an alternative energy vehicle event in Florida-have developed just such a system for their 70 mile cross-country route. Each vehicle will carry a GPS unit, a computer, a packet converter and a ham radio. Using local amateur radio repeaters, packet radio data messages will be transmitted from the start of the race to the finish, containing GPS location data and other information about each vehicle in the event.
