The linguistic view of woman in English and Polish proverbsThe aim of this paper is to present the linguistic view of woman in English and Polish proverbs. According to philosophers and linguists whose ideas shaped the concept of the linguistic worldview and cognitive definition, the language we use provides us with a specific interpretation of the world. Cognitive definitions should account for the way language users perceive particular phenomena. This article looks at connotative features encoded in English and Polish proverbs about women, which are sets of implicit judgments that build the linguistic stereotype of woman. The analysis of the material shows that the linguistic stereotypes of woman in English and Polish proverbs are to a great extent similar and predominantly negative. Yet, there are language specific differences concerning the overall attitude towards women, as well as relative salience of particular features.

What does grammar tell us about the image of the world?Grammatical structures, both regular, strongly embedded in the language, and those which are exceptions from a synchronic viewpoint, are not only carriers of certain cultural messages, but also mirrors of the way of perceiving the world. The lingual representation of the world recorded in the grammar of the Polish language is comprised, among others, of the following features: anthropocentrism, that is observable both in lexis and grammar; a hierarchical-patriarchal structure of society supported by, among other things, the masculine-personal gender and honorific pronouns; xenophobia and national megalomania, and efforts to avoid responsibility. The objective of this paper is to show how language influences the thinking and behaviour of people, and consequently it maintains a specific, negative autostereotype of Poles. The analysed material was excerpted from grammar textbooks originating from the end of the 18th century to the present day.

In the stream of the new evangelization: An attempt to reconstruct the linguistic image of evangelization in the Bible, Catechism of the Catholic Church and in texts of contemporary evangelists The article is an attempt to present the linguistic image of the notion of “evangelization”, namely its cognitive structure in the Bible, in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and in selected source texts, thematically related to the so-called new evangelization. It applies the method of description of the major aspects of a notion, which is used in ethnolinguistics. For evangelization, such aspects are: object and subject of evangelization; the place and time of evangelization; the ways and methods of evangelization; the circumstances related to the event of evangelization conditions; the effective works of evangelization; the definitions of evangelization; the works focused on evangelization; the acts of evangelization; the features of evangelization; the phenomena related to evangelization; and what serves the purpose of evangelization. On the basis of the presented analysis, it is pointed out that during the last 20 years in the teachings of the Catholic Church’s evangelists the semantic range of the notion “evangelization” has changed.
