Instability can be thought of as an interactive process involving the three main functional groups listed in Table 1. The difficulty arises in isolating the chemical importance of each functional group and specific mechanisms to the overall process. It is amazing that less than 1 ppm of the fuel itself is involved in the process that has the potential to be detrimental to an entire storage tank.
