Poplar monocultures are some of the most common short-rotation coppices. While they are most often considered of low environmental value, they have recently gained recognition for their multifaceted role in ecological engineering, such as carbon sinks, soil remediators or green energy producers. Nonetheless, the biodiversity of poplar plantations remains little known and largely overlooked. Here we conducted a systematic botanical survey of 232 poplar plantations within the Pannonian ecoregion (central Europe) in order to assess their plant diversity, with particular focus on terrestrial orchids. Our results highlight that almost 60% of poplar monocultures harbour terrestrial orchids, some with several thousand specimens. Overall, we documented the occurrence of 15 species of terrestrial orchids in the surveyed plantations, including taxa with limited distributions and a threatened conservation status. For instance, we report numerous new populations of Epipactis bugacenis and E. tallosii in poplar plantations, suggesting that the majority of these taxa occur in poplar monocultures within Hungary. We analysed and highlight soil chemistry and plantation characteristics that predict the occurrence and species richness of terrestrial orchids in poplar monocultures. The probability of orchids being present is highest in older and larger poplar plantations, characterized by high total organic matter content and high soil pH. We conclude that plantations of native and alien poplar harbour valuable plant communities, including terrestrial orchids and other vascular plants of significant conservation importance. Using the knowledge generated here, we recommend delaying or partial harvest of poplar plantations to increase their conservation potential.

In this paper we present a taxonomic assessment of Sorbus subgen. Aria in the Malé Karpaty Mts (western Slovakia and north-eastern Austria). Detailed field observations, morphological comparison, herbarium revisions, multivariate morphometric analyses, flow cytometry and molecular (nuclear microsatellite markers) analyses were used to assess the taxonomic diversity within this group. Diploids, triploids and tetraploids were detected. Diploids are represented by a single taxon, S. aria, which shows considerable morphological and genetic variability. Sorbus aria ranges from rare to locally abundant throughout the area studied. Triploids are confined to the central and southern parts of the region and include several single, presumably apomictic individuals and rare apomictic lineages, which are not treated as separate species here due to the very limited number of individuals recorded. Tetraploids show similar distribution patterns to those of triploids: S. danubialis and S. collina occur in the southern part of the mountains, while S. petraea, a new species described here, inhabits the central part of the mountain range. The entire population of S. petraea includes approximately one hundred individuals. It occurs mainly in the surroundings of Vysoká Mt. by the village of Kuchyňa, where it forms several small populations and approximately 30 individuals grow on Čierna skala hill by the village of Plavecký Mikuláš. In addition to these recent occurrences, there are two herbarium specimens from the 1960s documenting the species on Vápená Mt. The low genetic and morphological variability and flow cytometric seed screening indicate an apomictic mode of reproduction in this species and justify its recognition at the species level. Sorbus collina is reported here in Slovakia for the first time. We have not confirmed the occurrence of S. austriaca, S. buekkensis, S. carpatica, S. graeca, S. pannonica, S. thaiszii and S. zolyomii in the Malé Karpaty Mts and consider the previously published records to be erroneous. Lectotypes are designated for S. thaiszii and S. zolyomii. A determination key, detailed distribution maps and photographs of representative herbarium specimens of all taxa of S. subgen. Aria occurring in the Malé Karpaty Mts are provided. A line drawing and a photograph of the newly described species are also presented.

The north-western part of the Carpathian Basin is an important biogeographical crossroad. This transitional area between the forest-steppe biome of the Pannonian biogeographical region and the temperate forest biome hosts scattered patches of natural steppe embedded in forests, especially in rugged landscapes. The unique geographical position is reflected in the plant assemblages, which are composed of species of different origins, mainly central-European, continental, Mediterranean and sub-Mediterranean. We sampled sites with well-preserved forest-steppe vegetation on different substrates across this region. At each site, we sampled the vegetation in three habitats: steppe, forest and ecotone. We then attempted to disentangle the influence of geographical location, climate and substrate on the species composition of forest-steppe landscapes and the percentage of the species with a particular type of distribution. We found that substrate is the main factor determining species sorting. Substrate is also largely responsible for the percentage of species with particular types of distribution. While continental species are most frequent on loess, Mediterranean species are mainly found on andesite. Sub-Mediterranean species are most frequent on dolomite and rare on loess. The distributions of these species can be explained by the environmental conditions in the core of their native ranges. The complexity of the distribution patterns of species in the north-western Pannonian forest-steppe shown in this study should be considered in the discussion of the environmental history of the region and conservation planning.
