The paper proposes the M-OBLIGE model for building multitutor ontology-based learning environments. We show bow the model can be applied to tutors in the database domain. The proposed model can be used as a framework for integrating multiple tutors on the Web.

The present paper investigates the construction of a navigation system that assists the learner in linking learning task so that the structure of the learner's understanding will conform to the structure of instructional material. As an initial step, a measure of the dissimilarity between two digraphs expressing the structure of instructional material and the structure of learner's understanding, respectively, is defined. Details concerning the navigation will be reported at a later date.

This paper describes the evolution of a first year Java course at Griffith University-Gold Coast since Semester 1, 2000 to the December 2002. The course was updated to emphasise program design and to implement and evaluate an "objects-as-needed" approach to first year programming. A number of strategies were tested to increase consistency amongst teaching staff, improve delivery of course resources, successfully cater to a wide variety of students and to enhance the learning experience in general. The success of the revised course has been measured by evaluating student feedback and performance. Currently, a focus group-based strategy of evaluation is being adopted to determine students' attitudes to the most recently implemented changes.

This paper argues that in order to further improve the quality of digital learning environments one must also invest in the invention and development of digital genres. Quality and complexity at the level of document genres, messages and meaning will be defining criteria for superior digital learning environments. The paper suggests that perspectives from genre theory should be applied to the understanding and development of learning objects. Based on a survey of various genres, in both traditional learning environments and digital formats, such as computer games, a prototype genre - the Intro - is presented for application in educational project work.

Web-based electronic teaching portfolios and videoclipped teaching episodes using by video-on-demand (VOD) system can serve as devices for reflective inquiry and self-assessment by preservice teachers during the student teaching semester. Carefully structured procedures in a web-based electronic teaching portfolio and VOD assessment program can assist preservice teachers in developing the pedagogical knowledge and skills necessary to effectively plan, implement, evaluate, and manage instruction. Adequate orientation and training in the program will enable preservice teachers to engage in the reflective processes of observing, analyzing, and evaluating their teaching performance. Carefully designed procedures can result in the videoclipped teaching episodes being utilized as effective tools for the improvement of instruction rather than simply a souvenir or memento from the student teaching semester. This paper presents the web-based electronic teaching portfolio and VOD assessment program employed in the Center for Educational Research and Practice of Shiga University in Japan. The program has been a valuable tool for helping education majors make the transition from student to teacher.

We describe the use of a simulated student in a synchronous but distributed collaborative learning environment in the domain of programming. The role of the simulated student is to detect and repair difficulties in collaborative learning amongst the human students, for example when a human student is too passive or when the students start chatting about off-topic conversations. The simulated student intervenes by posting messages in the shared "chat" window, just like the human students and was believed to be another human student by them. The paper describes the rules by which the simulated student operates and briefly outlines an evaluation of the system with university first year programming students. The system proved to be successful both in detecting a range of difficulties and in intervening effectively.

The purpose of this study is to develop a distance learning program based on virtual reality (VR). The stream erosion (SE) in Taiwan is chosen as a case study of interactive VR distance learning (DL). This study integrates various sources to develop an interactive VR distance learning program. Taiwan is one of the areas with a high stream erosion rate. This high erosion rate has attracted worldwide attention and is regarded as a good example for geosciences education. This research is aimed to help motivate learners with practical information that is perceptually easy to process. Also, in the VR distance learning environment unlike the traditional classroom, each student can learn individually with the computer according to his/her own time, location, and pace.

This paper presents arguments to use technologies of information and communication (TIC) for teaching and learning. It starts with an overview of the environment that the education sector is facing, and then describes an experimentation with an actual Internet-based learning environment: WebCT. This research offers theoretical and practical foundations to promote this use.

e-learning has become an important topic, both in academia and industry. This paper reports on a newly created Web-based platform, called eXtreme e-Learning eXperience (XLX), to perform exercise work of technically oriented graduate-level university courses, in support of blended learning. In addition to providing a course portal with traditional teaching material, an e-mail list, and a discussion forum, XLX's main contribution lies in a personalized training section that allows transparent access to underlying (possibly commercial) third-party systems such as database systems, XSLT processors, or workflow management systems for hands-on experience and increased students' motivation.
