Saintsavaism(s) and Nationalism: An Overview of the Development of the Serbian Orthodox Phenomenon of Saintsavaism, with a Special Focus on the Contribution of Justin Popovic (1894–1979)

This article provides a reflection on a relatively controversial phenomenon in the Serbian Orthodox Church, namely saintsavaism (serb. svetosavlje). The controversy accompanying the term is related to its association with the Serbian nationalism that erupted during the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990’s. This article aims to demonstrate that this particular interpretation of saintsavaism is, in fact, only one of at least four distinct understandings of the notion. Moreover, this article will argue that the author who contributed most significantly to the development of saintsavaism as the guiding principle of the Serbian Church to this day, namely, Justin Popovic (1894–1979), envisioned saintsavaism as, indeed, a totalizing worldview, and recognized its national significance, without, however, reducing it to simple ‘nationalism’. In order to make this case clear, the article will analyze in detail Popovic’s seminal work on saintsavaism (available only in Serbian), Saintsavaism as a Philosophy of Life (1953).
svetosavlje)。

Denominational Mobility among Palestinian Christians
Pub Date : 2021-03-19 DOI: 10.1163/1572543X-12341584
M. Parkkinen
This article examines denominational mobility – switching or crossing denominational lines – among Palestinian Christians in Palestine. The study uses qualitative methods and content-driven analysis of interviews with thirty-five Palestinian Christians, conducted in February, March, April and November 2017. The results suggest that denominational mobility is happening among Palestinian Christians between Orthodox, Catholic, mainline Protestant, and Evangelical communities. The analysis revealed three main motives for this denominational mobility: personal belief, marital and family reasons and socio/economic related reasons. Interviewees most often mentioned personal belief as the primary reason for denominational mobility, followed by marital or family matters. Additionally, within the population interviewed, young adults and women were the most mobile in their denominational affiliation. Furthermore, this research suggests that an individualistic impulse in denominational mobility is present within the Palestinian Christian community where denominational mobility traditionally is not encouraged.

This article attempts to investigate the contribution of the African evangelical theologian and church leader Byang H. Kato (1936–1975) to the salvation debate in the early 1970s. Due to his radical standpoint and at times uncompromising tone, Kato’s soteriological proposals have been characterized as a reproduction of western theology. This article aims to demonstrate that, rather than reiterating a specific American or western concept of theology, Kato’s soteriology should be read as a contextual evangelical response to the ongoing theological debates of his time.

Context: It is now widely accepted that the climate is changing, and that societal response will need to be rapid and comprehensive to prevent the most severe impacts. A key milestone in global climate governance is to assess progress on adaptation. To-date, however, there has been negligible robust, systematic synthesis of progress on adaptation or adaptation-relevant responses globally. Aim: The purpose of this review protocol is to outline the methods used by the Global Adaptation Mapping Initiative (GAMI) to systematically review human adaptation responses to climate-related changes that have been documented globally since 2013 in the scientific literature. The broad question underpinning this review is: Are we adapting to climate change? More specifically, we ask ‘what is the evidence relating to human adaptation-related responses that can (or are) directly reducing risk, exposure, and/or vulnerability to climate change?’ Methods: We review scientific literature 2013-2019 to identify documents empirically reporting on observed adaptation-related responses to climate change in human systems that can directly reduce risk. We exclude non-empirical (theoretical & conceptual) literature and adaptation in natural systems that occurs without human intervention. Included documents were coded across a set of questions focused on: Who is responding? What responses are documented? What is the extent of the adaptation-related response? What is the evidence that adaptation-related responses reduce risk, exposure and/or vulnerability? Once articles are coded, we conduct a quality appraisal of the coding and develop ‘evidence packages’ for regions and sectors. We supplement this systematic mapping with an expert elicitation exercise, undertaken to assess bias and validity of insights from included/coded literature vis a vis perceptions of real-world adaptation for global regions and sectors, with associated confidence assessments. Related protocols: This protocol represents Part 2 of a 5-part series outlining the phases of methods for this initiative. Part 2 outlines the methods used to conduct keyword searches and implement machine-assisted screening of documents based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. See Figures 1 and 2.

From the Margins of the Colophon: Arab Orthodox Monasticism in Ruins

This article, drawn from two years of ethnographic fieldwork, traces the temporal articulations of Orthodox Christian monasticism in post-war Lebanon. It recounts one Lebanese monastery’s reinhabitation—founded on the uncanny return of its martyred saints—as evidence of monastic life’s constitutive intimacy with ruination. The article subsequently explores the grammars of temporal delimitation (the juridical and territorial apparatuses of state land tenure as well as the archival trace of historiography) and argues that these approaches disable the possibility of accounting for such a return in ruins. Offering the Orthodox tradition’s language of ascetical dispossession as an analytic counterpoint, the article takes up the monastic language of renunciatory withdrawal. The temporality of this withdrawal, in its protological and its eschatological marginalization, brings into relief a form of time that presses upon the limits of historiography.

In describing Christianity in the Middle East, scholars often highlight religious oppression, especially in relation to the larger Islamic context. Such contentious descriptions often cast Christians in the role of dhimmis, who are tolerated but not regarded as equal members of Muslim societies. Only in recent years some scholars have begun to modify their depictions of Christians and Christian-Muslim relations in the Middle East. While Christians in the Middle East have experienced and in certain regions continue to experience persecution, solely portraying them as victims does not do justice to the reality on the ground. By means of a case study on Palestine, I argue that an examination of the interaction between sharia (Islamic law) and Christian personal status laws sheds a different light on Christian identity and Christian-Muslim relations in the Middle East, and demonstrates the agency of Palestinian Christian communities in this respect.

Islamic Law, Unitary State Law, and Communal Law: Divorce and Remarriage in Egypt’s Coptic Community

Egypt’s Coptic community is currently appealing to different legal jurisdictions in the struggle over divorce and remarriage. While the Coptic Orthodox Church is claiming the right, based on Islamic law, to apply its own communal law for marriage, others are calling on the church to reinterpret the biblical texts regarding divorce. Still other Copts are appealing to the constitution and to unitary state law to override a communal approach to personal status law. The case of divorce and remarriage in Egypt illustrates the ways in which Christian communal law, unitary state law, and Islamic law do not exist as a priori concepts but are in the process of continual negotiation with one another. In examining these negotiations, this article sheds light on one of the most important legal conundrums currently facing the relationship between the Coptic community and the state in Egypt.

While the Coptic Orthodox Church is claiming the right, based on Islamic law, to apply its own communal law for marriage, others are calling on the church to reinterpret the biblical texts regarding divorce. Still other Copts are appealing to the constitution and to unitary state law to override a communal approach to personal status law. The case of divorce and remarriage in Egypt illustrates the ways in which Christian communal law, unitary state law, and Islamic law do not exist as a priori concepts but are in the process of continual negotiation with one another. In examining these negotiations, this article sheds light on one of the most important legal conundrums currently facing the relationship between the Coptic community and the state in Egypt.","PeriodicalId":20660,"journal":{"name":"Protocol exchange","volume":"5 1","pages":"215-236"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82222914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
