Morphological characteristics of nuclear material is one of important features for material discrimination in nuclear forensic analysis. Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has studied the methods and procedures for quantifying particle shapes for nuclear forensics application in order to improve accuracy and speed of nuclear forensic material discrimination. In this paper, current status of the works for material discrimination analysis by particle shapes of nuclear materials for nuclear forensics application performed in JAEA is discussed.

Low-temperature mineral-like magnesium potassium phosphate matrix of various chemical compositions have been synthesized. Their phase composition, structure and distribution of radioactive waste components have been studied. The mechanical, thermal, radiation and hydrolytic stability of the synthesized materials have been investigated according to the valid regulatory requirements. It has been demonstrated that the magnesium potassium phosphate matrix is promising materials for industrial solidification of the liquid waste, including highly saline actinide-containing waste with complex chemical composition.

Competing antiferromagnetic phases of the under-screened Anderson lattice model (INVITED)

We investigate the magnetic phases of the Under-screened Anderson Lattice Model (UALM) for nearly half-filled 5f bands and find a competition between two distinct magnetic phases. The version of the UALM that we consider consists of two correlated 5f bands that, in the paramagnetic state, hybridize with a single conduction band. At the Néel temperature, the paramagnetic state undergoes a second-order transition to antiferromagnetically ordered states, in which the Néel order parameter induces a mixing between the states with different 5f characters. As pressure is applied, there is a line of first-order transitions that separates two Néel phases. Furthermore, as the pressure is increased, the Néel temperature decreases as if the system is being driven towards a quantum critical point. However, the nature of the paramagnetic instability changes from second-order to first-order before the Neel temperature reaches absolute zero.

In order to investigate the electronic and magnetic states of UGe2 element-specifically, we have performed soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism experiments at the U N4,5 and Ge L2,3 absorption edges. We have detected the XMCD signals at both the U and Ge sites and observed clear hysteresis loops in the ferromagnetic (FM) state at T = 5.5 K. From the branching ratio B, it is found that the occupation number of 5f electrons (n5f) in UGe2 is close to 3. In addition, applying the magneto-optical sum rules analysis to the XMCD spectrum at the U N4,5 edges, the ratio of orbital magnetic moment to the spin magnetic moment (-ML/MS) is estimated to be 2.17. These values of B and -ML/MS are comparable compared with the results of other FM superconductors: URhGe and UCoGe.

The solubility method has been used for a long time. Many older published studies used inadequate procedures fraught with deficiencies/problems and resulted in much of the older solubility data being of poor quality. What is surprising however is that there are still articles currently appearing in print describing new studies wherein the most up-to-date procedures have not been used. Discussed herein are important procedures to quantify/control during the use of solubility method to obtain reliable thermodynamic data. These procedures include quantification of hydrogen ion, selection of redox agents to control particular oxidation states for redox sensitive elements such as actinides, and separation of solids from solutions for determining soluble concentrations. Also discussed are 1) ideal procedures/characteristics for conducting solubility studies or evaluating the older literature, 2) an example of how to use the evaluation criteria to judge the quality of older data, 3) some pitfalls in interpreting solubility data, and 4) examples of future research for which the solubility method is ideally suited.
