Abstract The aim of this study is to perform a life cycle cost analysis (LCC), where the economic cost of extending service life by the impregnation of bridge edge beams is compared to the reparation of an edge beam. Previous economic analyses on bridge edge beams had shown that there was no clear economic benefit in impregnating the edge beams. However, results from this study pointed out that in most cases there is a clear economic benefit to impregnate the bridge edge beams even if it has to be repeated every 15 years.

In separation cracks in RC elements (e. g. park decks), a short-term chloride exposure can already cause reinforcement corrosion. It is questionable, if a deep injection of the crack as an exclusive procedure is sufficient for effectively stopping the corrosion process. For investigating the corrosion activity during the chloride exposition and after the crack maintenance, cracked beams with crack-crossing reinforcement were fabricated. The cracks have been grout injected with PUR after a winter season of six month with a periodic chloride exposure. The anodic (element) current was recorded both before and after the injection. During chloride exposure the measured current flows were very high (sometimes > 200 μA). After the injection they slowly decreased and dropped nearly to zero in the next winter period. In the next summer the current flows increased just marginally, which seems to be mostly uncritical.

The NMR MOUSE®, a device using single-sided nuclear magnetic resonance, allows the non-destructive determination of static and dynamic near-surface (currently up to 25 mm depth) hydrogen-containing phases in objects of any size. The present article briefly describes the measuring principle and then highlights applications of single-sided NMR in building materials research using examples from current and former ibac projects. These are mainly the quantitative, depth-dependent measurement of the water content, monitoring the transport of water, hydrophobing agents, and reactive systems in concrete along with determining the layer thickness and ageing processes in polymer films. In addition, the article describes how the presence of steel reinforcements influences the measured values and presents initial results obtained at a real-life building.

The use in building construction is a relatively new application of polymer concrete. In a research project a building block system and the fabrication technology for the reversible construction of buildings with regionally available aggregates were developed. In this paper the aspects of the successful material development are described, especially with regard to the characterization of both the binders and the polymer concretes, considering strength and durability.

Biogenic sulphuric acid, as it is formed e. g. at the ceiling of sewage pipes, can severely damage unprotected concrete structures and limit the service life. Today, no durable and at the same time affordable system exists that allows protecting the concrete under such aggressive conditions. To compensate this, a new, dry-sprayed polymer concrete for the rehabilitation of damaged sewage systems was developed by a combined effort of the Institute of Building Materials Research and Massenberg GmbH. In this paper, we describe the parameters relevant for the dry-spraying of polymer concrete as well as the technical properties of the concrete. The results show the excellent properties and the potential of the sprayed polymer concrete for the rehabilitation of sewage systems.

Experiences made during construction of parking garages raised repeatedly controversial discussions among the engineers concerned, despite the rules and explanations given in the DBV Information Sheet and in DIN 1045-1 together with the comments published in DAfStb Reports No. 525 and No. 526. Recommendations and interpretations shall be consistent and unambiguous, however, and they shall represent the generally accepted state-of-the-art of science and technology. In order to locate the actual situation and learn the opinion of experts, DAfStb has organized two specific colloquia. As a result of these two meetings DAfStb has recommended that the content of DAfStb Report No. 600 and the modifications published in the DBV Information Sheet shall be discussed in the appropriate standards committees and results shall be integrated in the national appendix of DIN EN 1992-1-1. Based on the results of the two colloquia, DAfStb has accepted the task to do the necessary preparatory work. In this contribution the actual state of the consultations within DAfStb shall be outlined.
