Mortality is seen as the most significant criterium for the prognosis of the disease in a population and with respect to the effectiveness of prophylactic and therapeutic measures. The extraordinary high-mortality from breast carcinoma causes more psychological strain for women in working age. Breast carcinoma is the most frequent cause of death between the ages of 40 and 60 in the population of the GDR. Relevant data are the sex and age related mortality. From its reduction the cost and benefit for secondary prevention and especially of mammography can be evaluated.

Experiences with embolization of the spleen artery after blunt spleen trauma in 32 patients are reported. Haemostasis by selective application of 60% glucose solution with aminocaproic acid. The method is technically simple, requires no embolization materials, and is free of postembolization complications. It preserves the organ and its function, diminishes the need for donor blood and shortens the period of hospitalization. Intraarterial application of 60% glucose solution can be used as single method of treatment or before surgery. Contraindications are massive lesions of the spleen that require immediate surgical treatment.

315 percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasties performed during 1978-1988 in 261 patients with ischemic heart disease were analyzed for three different variants according to primary effectiveness, failure rate the most frequent complications and costs of materials as well as duration of intervention and fluoroscopy. Only variant 3 of the proceeding (soft-tip-applicators, flat profile balloon catheter, Kaltenbach long-wire technique, streptokinase rinsing of instruments, permanent infusion of instruments during the procedure) is an applicable routine method. It has a primary effectiveness of 86%. For multiple vessel PTCA this variant however resulted in significantly prolonged investigation and fluoroscopy intervals, so it is advisable only for selected groups of patients.

The paper is a survey on the latest developments in luminescent x-ray imaging systems. Special attention was given to two problems, the reduction of cross-over in screen-film-systems by variation of the spectrum of luminescence and the development of digital storage phosphor systems. Recent developments in the evaluation of x-ray luminescent screens are also discussed.

The effects of Ioxitalamate/Telebrix-BYK GULDEN were tested for excretion urography and various angiographic applications and in animal experiments (selective renal angiography in 36 dogs). The contrast medium was well tolerated and the radiographs were of good quality. Significant effects were not detected, neither in blood pressure, heart rate and ECG, nor in Se-creatinine, nor in UN-, SGOT and Se-bilirubin values. In 4 cases transient proteinuria was observed. In the kidneys of the dogs no mentionable effects, histological or ultrastructural, were found. The use of Ioxitalamate seems advisable for investigations that require contrast media with low osmotic pressure.

In 563 consecutive heart catheter investigations in sucklings, infants and children 109 open ducti were diagnosed. 75 children (13.3%) had a ductus arteriosus persistens (DAP) and 34 a ductus arteriosus (DAA). We were able to measure 89 ducti. Groups were formed according to the age of the children, of DAP or DAA and the intended treatment. The sizes of the ducti constitute a set of data for improving the methods for closure or newly developed transvasal methods of conservation of the ductus as an aortopulmonary shunt.

From a pool of patients, treated because of cardiac diseases on ward for 4 years, 8 subjects, the mean age of which amounted to 46 (SD 12) years, showing stable angina pectoris in usual physical activity, were chosen. In these patients widespread examinations including invasive procedures had not been evident for one of the well defined heart diseases. In two patients dysrhythmias appeared during standardized exercise test while in four other subjects acute cardiac findings consisted of chest pain, significant depression of ST segments or inversion of T waves were observed. One patient had a normal result of the exercise test. A myocardial thallium-201 imaging was performed in four subjects. In three patients imaging showed questionable or mild signs of ischemia. The result suggest the existence of unknown shapes in coronary heart disease, the origin of which is possibly connected with a disorder of microvascular smooth muscle reactivity.

We evaluated 249 boys with various intrascrotal diseases. Sonography has in the scrotal region a high sensitivity and specificity as well as good capability for differential diagnosis. It is especially in childhood for intrascrotal disease the technical method of first choice for diagnostics.
