Assembleia da República is one of the most important sovereignty body of the Portuguese State. But what characterizes it sociologically? Based on an ethnography of the Parliament, this study proposes three arguments. The first is that political representation is socially confined: tendentially dominated by white men, qualified, with dominant formations in law, economics and management, coming from the largest urban areas and participating in a multiple political environment. Next, it is argued that individual action of the members of parliament can only be understood from its insertion in a highly hierarchical world. Finally, it is proposed that distinct class positions enhance or inhibit access and adaptation to the political field. This is a field where the unequal distribution of political capital, a form of composite capital, simultaneously cultural, social and symbolic, establishes a set of boundaries between who is inside and who is outside, between who can represent and who should be represented.

Conducting research on sensitive topics and with vulnerable populations entails a set of challenges and that imply thoroughly thinking about research design in order to respond to such challenges. This article presents a research experience focused on the analysis of food aid initiatives operating in Portugal and on its actors (volunteers and food aid recipients). The several strategies that were adopted during the fieldwork, namely participant observation through the practice of volunteering and semi-structured interviews, are discussed. Drawing on a critical and reflexive analysis, aspects such as access to the field, volunteer status, management of emotions and application of informed consent in a context marked by sensitivity and vulnerability are explored. Thus, this article contributes to the discussion of approaches that can be mobilized in this kind of research.

This article takes as its starting point the Programa Nacional para a Coesão Territorial [National Program for Territorial Cohesion], to discuss the importance of adequate governancemodels that support the promotion of territorial development and cohesion. More specifically, it is argued that the challenges of territorial cohesion and the definition of a development plan for the Portuguese inland territories require, alongwith the framework ofmeasures to be implemented, the definition of a governancemodel that is broad and confers the necessary protagonism to the local actors in the search for solutions to the challenges faced.

How to reveal andmonitor social inequalities in contemporary Portuguese society, particularly on a regional scale? Contemporary scientific debates call for the problematics of inequality and development to come close to each other. This article intends to contributes to the understanding of the relations between these scientific issues, considering the social inequalities of the country and the specific disadvantages of the low-density territories. To this end, we analyse how demography, education, employment, social classes and health are associated to social inequalities between the regions of the national territory. The empirical results show that in the Portuguese society there is a persistence of unequal development processes at the regional scale and in regard to the low density territories.

To live in the post-truth era is to face unusual realities and fractal reports in which facts, truths and lies are merged and everything appears distorted. For Sociology, this is an enormous challenge that advises us to un-learn much of our once strong convictions about how to research. When everything seemed to be increasingly more accessible and open, we are faced up against a neo-tribal closure in networks and networks of networks that say and unsay everything with intrepid speed. Capitalism, that today is (also) knowledge capitalism, acts fast and soft on the ways of perceiving society, the market and power. It uses research centres and laboratories on its behalf, subjects CVs to sinister metrics, and renders the explanation of its failures and world’s disconnections to become scapegoats. Sociology has to re-do itself and mobilize all senses to account, as the poet, how the flock is being tended.
