The input impedance and radiation characteristics of a stripline dipole antenna on different substrate schemes are presented. Two radiation environments, a semi-infinite galliumarsenide substrate (hereafter called a “semi-infinite substrate”) and a thin gallium-arsenide substrate backed by a silicon lens (hereafter a “lens substrate”), were examined, and the antenna performances were analyzed in a broad frequency range up to 5.0 THz. The semi-infinite substrate approach is useful in the initial investigation of the antenna characteristic itself while saving a significant amount of computational time. The study provides good guidelines for the design of a terahertz photoconductive antenna in that the antenna effect and the lens substrate effect can be individually characterized and optimized for the best possible performance.

The focus of this paper is the performance evaluation and optimization of LTE MIMO antennas for automotive applications by using field trials in live networks. Being the more challenging frequency range- due to confined space for antenna systems in cars, investigations are carried out in the LTE Band 20 (800 MHz). Key parameters for the evaluation of radio channel quality are presented. Different antenna configurations and designs are qualified in terms of correlation factor (based on complex far-field pattern) and evaluated in test drives with respect to MIMO performance and achievable downlink throughput values. Recommendations for antenna optimization are defined based on the results.

The paper reports miniaturization of recently introduced planar omnidirectional circularly polarized antennas. The technique relies on folding the antennas patch underneath itself, decreasing overall footprint. The connectivity between layers is provided by vias, enabling cost efficient PCB manufacturing techniques. The average axial ratio in the xz-plane is less than 3 dB in the band of 2.392 to 2.407 GHz. This is better than previously reported antennas of this type.

This paper presents a novel varactor-load radiating element for reconfigurable reflectarray. The unit-cell for reflectarray consists of patch groups integrated with varactors and the circuitry for DC biasing voltage control. The proposed unit-cell can generate the dual-polarized tunable reflection thanks to the wide reflected phase tuning range, resonant frequencies shift and the symmetry in the structure. The performance has been evaluated by full wave simulations, and the detailed results are demonstrated and discussed.

This paper discusses a radio channel measurement scheme to bring site specific propagation characteristics of a live LTE network to a virtual drive testing in a MIMO Over-the-Air (OTA) emulation environment. A directional radio channel measurement performed in a live LTE network in nine different locations is reported and the modelling procedure for MIMO OTA is described. The channel measurement system is composed of a scanner for LTE network, a directive dual polarized antenna, and a channel analysis & modelling software. Measured radio channel parameters are power angular distribution, power delay profile, received polarization power ratio, Ricean K-factor, antenna correlation, and received signal level. The measurement results indicate, for instance, that the angular power distribution is not uniform, but has a range of variation of up to 22 dB, and that the received polarization power ratio is not 0 dB, but vary in between 13 and -8 dB. Line-of-sight component was present in many locations, the average Ricean K-factor was 3.6 dB.

This paper reports the synthesis of two-dimensional time-domain antenna arrays for steerable energy patterns and minimization of side lobe level. The study is focused into the uniform and non-uniform geometries. The synthesis is based on the well-known sequential quadratic programming. The obtained results show the capabilities of the different antenna arrays to steer the beam in both azimuth and elevation planes with low side lobes.

This work presents the multidimensional analysis of both deterministic and measurements data in terms of clusters for indoor mmW channels. Firstly, by applying RiMAX, MPC (multipath components) and DMC (dense multipath components) are extracted from both an indoor measurement campaign and ray tracing simulations, including diffuse scatter. Secondly, from the RiMAX estimated paths, K-means with MCD (multipath component distance) is applied to compare the distribution of clusters.

There is a growing need to develop high-gain low-cost antennas for satellite applications. To potentially meet this need, this paper proposes an optically transparent reflectarray antenna with patch elements fabricated using transparent conductive oxide (TCO). This antenna can be incorporated into the solar panels of a satellite, maximizing the satellite's surface area for both solar power collection and antenna gain. In order to reduce loss, the elements are both single-layer and sub-wavelength. Using these elements, a 10×10 optically transparent reflectarray was designed that produces a beam at 20° off-broadside.

High power sources and high sensitivity detectors are in demand for any terahertz imaging and sensing system. Incorporating plasmonic contact electrodes in photoconductive terahertz sources and detectors has proved to offer higher terahertz radiation powers and detection sensitivities by enhancing the photoconductor quantum efficiency significantly. This is because of the unique capability of plasmonic electrodes in manipulating the concentration of photocarriers near photoconductor contact electrodes, allowing a larger number of photocarriers reach photoconductor contact electrodes within a terahertz oscillation cycle to efficiently contribute to terahertz radiation and detection. The impact of plasmonic electrodes on enhancing the output power and detection sensitivity of photoconductive terahertz sources and detectors is universal and can be employed in various types of photoconductive terahertz antennas, as summarized in this article.

A non-planar dielectric rod antenna array with operation frequency of 11.2 GHz is proposed, designed, and measured. This antenna array is combined with a RF-MEMS switch to realize the switched-beam performance. Moreover, this antenna array exhibits a uniform performance for different scan angles. The antenna characterization and measurement with the RF-MEMS switch have been done. The measured antenna pattern in the anechoic chamber is in a good agreement with the simulated antenna structure. At 11.2 GHz, the measured antenna has ~17.2 dBi realized gain, 22° beamwidth, and 7.3% bandwidth (i.e 800 MHz). The measured isolation between adjacent antenna elements is -40 dB.
