Mintel Reports provides solid market intelligence for both academic and commercial institutions. The reports offer in-depth analyses of consumer demographics and psychographics, market status, trend forecasts, competitive strategies, and case studies, all backed by interactive data visualizations. The 2023 upgrade formats these analyses and data into a clean, easy-to-read, easy-to-use layout, with smart infographics and multiple options for saving, sharing, and creating. The more mobile-friendly navigation, despite some accessibility issues, is much improved from the legacy product. Mintel Reports, already a staple for business, marketing, and advertising students, is an even more attractive resource with the new look and features.

Pub Date : 2024-04-01 DOI: 10.5260/chara.25.4.06
Lauren deLaubell
scite is a next-generation citation index that uses machine learning to retrieve and contextualize scientific research. Citing works are categorized as mentioning, supporting, or contrasting based on an artificial intelligence (AI) analysis of rhetoric and are presented with a measure of confidence, with relevant snippets of context from the citing article, and with access links (when available). scite includes a generative AI feature, called assistant, which translates natural language queries into searches, summarizes results, and provides relevant references. Users can browse or visualize results using the web interface. Use cases include citation searching to conduct systematic reviews, to track the evolution of research on a particular topic, to identify experts on a topic, and to calculate impact factor. Users can also upload papers to conduct a reference check for retracted articles.

RIPM Jazz Periodicals, a collaborative effort between the Institute of Jazz Studies (IJS) at Rutgers University and RIPM Partner and Participating Libraries, offers a unique collection of historical primary source jazz periodicals. With a focus on rare and hard-to-find content, the database has grown from 105 to 138 titles, spanning 350,000 citation records and 204,000 full-text pages. The product’s strength lies in exclusive content and the readability and quality of its scans. However, user experience challenges arise from the complexity of search functions. Despite minor drawbacks, continuous updates and plans for additional content highlight the product’s commitment to improvement. While there are no direct competitors, related products in the RIPM series cover different historical periods and geographic regions.

Power to the People: Counterculture, Social Movements, and the Alternative Press, Nineteenth to Twenty-First Century

Power to the People: Counterculture, Social Movements, and the Alternative Press, Nineteenth to Twenty-First Century is a Gale database (released in 2023) that documents four distinct primary source collections and three alterative press publications, encompassing ∼600,000 pages of material. It is an aptly named database, covering how counterculture activists/organizations and alternative presses shaped the formation of various social movements in the modern United States and United Kingdom. A broad range of ideas and initiatives can be found within the database, spanning topics such as gender equality, civil rights, antiwar efforts, labor movements, and environmental justice. It is also important to note that the primary source contributors represent diverse voices, from artists to satirists to grassroots organizers. Highlighting those voices may be aligned with broader decolonizing collections efforts underway at some institutions. The four highlighted collections and three alternative press titles include: The Pacific Coast Counterculture Collection (Robert P.J. Cooney, Jr.) Special Collections on Peace, Politics, and Social Change, Commonweal Library, University of Bradford Left-wing politics and radical political movement pamphlets, Ron Heisler Collection housed, University of London The Liberal Students of the 1960s Collection, University of Michigan Fortean Times (1976‐2020) Bizarre (1997‐2015) Viz (1979‐2020) The above grants community members, students, and faculty access to primary source materials that are contextually related yet geographically isolated from each other. Given Gale’s relatively large primary source suite of databases, this product complements the overall efforts Gale has made in curating distinct databases that cover relatively focused topics. Being able to cross-search across Gale’s primary source collections through a unified platform adds value to this product, depending on preexisting Gale primary source holdings.
