Artists of the World (AOW) is a biographical source for artists, artisans, craftspeople, designers, architects, and related occupations: It is “the world's most current, reliable, and extensive reference work on artists” (De Gruyter n.d.a.). It is the newer version of De Gruyter's Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon ‐ Internationale Künstlerdatenbank Online (AKL). Much of the content behind AOW is derived from AKL and its corresponding 119-plus print series built on previous art biographies in print. This fully digital resource has a new interface, search options, features, and a plan to expand, revise, and add content going forward. The scope is international but Western Europe is especially well covered.The look and search options of the interface are likely to continue to evolve, as marketing materials for the product indicate “preliminary version: web design still in process”for many of the screenshots.The database is still in its infancy, and it will take time for users to discover it, utilize it, attempt searches, learn of its new features, and discover its pros and cons. The EBSCO eBooks Open Access Monograph Collection is an excellent open-access (OA) collection. Current EBSCOhost subscribers can request the addition of this collection to their existing EBSCOhost interface. The general public can also access these OA books on a separate website. The collection, at the time of this review, is approaching 10,000 titles. About half of the collection is in English, and the other half is in German and 20 other languages. Most books in the English-language collection are new titles, dating from 2016 to present. There is a good representation of topics in history, social science, and political science. In fact, there is an especially good selection of books related to timely topics such as women's studies, urban planning, climate change, and diversity/equity issues. The reading audience varies from general reader to scholar. The interface search and retrieval of titles for EBSCOhost subscribers is identical to the traditional EBSCOhost interface. The public interface is more basic but allows users to filter their search and to search for keywords within the full text.

China and the Modern World, Imperial China and the West, one of several Gale Primary Sources databases, consists of two parts and this database is the first, covering 1815‐1881. The documents are drawn from the FO 17 and FO 605 series of British Foreign Office files held at the UK National Archives. The database contains correspondence relating to China from missionaries, interpreters, the factories of Canton (modern Guangzhou), interpreters, envoys, legations, consulates, and missions sent to China from Britain. Included are materials on war, diplomacy, international law, rebellions, trade, piracy, treaty ports, cross-cultural communication, and emigration. Also included are materials regarding the internal politics and relationship between China and Britain, as well as the relationships between other Western powers involved in East Asia. While this database is relatively easy to navigate, its search functions, though understandable, frequently do not provide results that are apparently relevant to the query submitted. Nevertheless, it provides an impressive collection of primary sources on the history of China in this time period, especially with regard to its relationship with Britain and the West. The database can be subscribed to or purchased. The starting purchase price ranges from $5,405 (with an annual hosting fee starting at $49) to $7,721 (with an annual hosting fee of $69).
