Using Youtube Video Clips of Different Themes To Enhance Students' Listening Skill in an Emi Class 利用Youtube上不同主题的影片片段,提高学生在Emi课堂上的听力技巧

These days, ICT (Information Communication Technology) tools have been increasingly applied in an EFL (English as a foreign language) class. In a class with students of mixed-ability level, the use of additional materials like ICT tools would be useful to boost students’ motivation. This study aimed to examine the effect of You Tube video clips of different themes on students’ listening ability in an EMI (English as Medium of Instruction) class. The treatment was 7 You Tube video clips of different themes added to the course instruction. A pretest-posttest one group design was conducted and students’ evaluation questionnaires were delivered to 31 students. The results showed that students had significant improvement in the post-test results and they also had positive attitude towards the use of You Tube video clips. Additionally, the students seemed to enjoy the clips of novel and humorous topics and they suggested more applications of video clips in the classroom for the next course. Implications were provided for further practices with video clip instruction in the future

An Analysis of the Use of Code Switching in the Students' Conversation 语码转换在学生会话中的运用分析

This present study aims to analyze the use of code switching in English conversation. This study focuses on the types of code switching that are often used by students in English conversation. The present study employed qualitative descriptive method. The participants were two first semester students of the English education program at Wiralodra Indramayu University. Before making observations, the writer first provided a conversation topic to make it easier to analyze the types of code switching used by students when speaking English. In this step, the writer observed the participants’ conversation using a recording device, then analyzed the results of these observations and conducted interview with students to find out the contributing factors of using code switching in their English conversation. The results of study point out that the first student uses the types of code-switching of inter sentential, intra sentential, and tag switching, while the second student uses the types of inter sentential and intra sentential code switching. Several contributing factors in doing the code switching are identified as nervousness, lack of vocabulary, and forgetting when speaking. Moreover, it is also defined that the use of code switching when speaking English is aimed to facilitate the participants’ conversational fluency

The School Literacy Movement at SDIT Nurul Yaqin Jakarta 在雅加达Nurul Yaqin的学校扫盲运动

The School Literacy Movement (GLS) is an implementation of the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 23 of 2015 concerning on the “Cultivation of Character”. Literacy culture is a habit of thinking followed by a reading-writing process which will eventually lead to critical thinking, problem solving, scientific development, and creation of works. This study aims to describe the policy of the school literacy movement at SDIT Nurul Yaqin. This type of study was a qualitative descriptive study with a case study approach. Data collection techniques employed interviews, observation and documentation. Source triangulation was conducted to ensure data validity. Research results point out as: (1) programs that support the GLS policy at SDIT Nurul Yaqin comprise of reading times, exhibitions, reading corners, story-telling, wall magazine, numeracy literacy, and making comics; and (2) factors supporting the implementation of the GLS policy program at SDIT Nurul Yaqin include commitment of the principal, participation of parents, support from the school community, allocation of 15 minutes of time for literacy, and varied media literacy. The inhibiting factors for GLS at SDIT Nurul Yaqin include inadequate books, inadequate library space, no GLS bureaucratic structure, and students’ reading awareness is still low

Characters And Moral Values in “The Lorax” by Chris Renaud 克里斯·雷诺(Chris Renaud)的《劳拉》(The Lorax)中的人物和道德价值观

The objective of this research is to analyze the character and moral value in “The Lorax” by Chris Renaud. The method employed a descriptive-analysis. Movie script and scenes were the data with tables for characters and moral values to be analyzed as the instruments. The data were analyzed by using Schmidt’s theory for characters and Gulla’s theory for moral values. The research results find out the five types of characters. The protagonist has the most fractions with 26%. Sidekick has the second-highest level at 20%. Another sidekick represents the same 20 % of the total. The antagonist's share of showing in this story is 16 %. The following percentage is 10 % for the mentor and the smallest group in terms of character is a love interest at 8%. The research also results in 11 moral values in this movie.They are kindness 18,7%, commitment 17,6%,  love 14,7%, honesty 12,7%, respect for others 9,8%, integrity 4,9%,  sacrifice 4,9%, compassionate 4,9%, truthfulness 4,9%, tolerance 3,9% and sincerity 3%. Ted Wiggins as the protagonist and the moral value of kindness have the most portion in this movie

The Use of Prepositions among EFL Learners: A Systematic Review 英语学习者介词使用的系统回顾

As a second/foreign language learner, one should understand the rules and convention of the language s/he learns and how to use it. Therefore, s/he needs to master the language to be able to have good communication with others. One aspect that needs to be learned is parts of speech such as nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions. Prepositions play a significant role in helping students increase their language skills. However, many students still face difficulties in learning its type of parts of speech. The purpose of this study is to examine the trends and main findings of the studies about the main error types and causes in using prepositions among second/foreign language learner. For this objective, articles from databases comprising Google Scholar, Eric, and Garuda Ristek were reviewed, and overall, selected articles were analysed. As the research methodology, systematic review was performed. A content analysis was used to evaluate the articles. According to the results of the study, the main error type in using prepositions among the learners is the wrong use of prepositions. In the meantime, the main cause of the errors made by the learners in using prepositions is the interlingual interference

Testing Learning Media for English Learning Applications Using BlackBox Testing Based on Equivalence Partitions 基于等效分区的黑盒测试方法测试英语学习应用的学习媒体

Some testings or testings of an application are very important. So that an application can appear to be running properly or there are still errors in its use. Which later can be improved optimally. In this test, the black box testing technique was used as a test. Black box testing is a system for testing an application by looking at the menu whether it is following what is desired or still needs improvement. The application that will be tested is the Duolingo application which on the play store gets a high rating and is used by more than 12 million smartphone users. The type of testing of the method used, namely the black box, varies, but one of the methods used here is Equivalence Partitions. The Equivalence Partitions technique is a test based on entering data on each form of the system or application used. In each menu, input data on each form will be tested and carried out based on its function, whether it is valid or not. So that by doing this testing the application is getting better and the application must be of good quality according to their respective functions. So that many smartphone users who want to use the application make it easy to use it

The Resignation Reporting News of The President’s Staff Via Online Media: A Norman Fairclough Critical Discourse Analysis 通过网络媒体报道总统工作人员辞职新闻:诺曼·费尔克劳的批评话语分析

The current research analyses the critical discourse on news broadcasting of president staff resigning Adamas Belva Syah Devara (ABSD) in online news mass media. Those are Detik.com, Kompas.com CnnIndonesia.com, CNBCIndonesia.com, Nasionaltempo.com, Kumparannews.com, Liputan6.com, VOAIndonesia.com, MediaIndonesia.com, and Republika.co.id. The method used was qualitative descriptive. Then data were analyzed using a content analysis procedure guided by the CDA theory of Norman Fairclough that involved text analysis, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. The result displayed 1) text analysis exposed that eight online media broadcasted the news based on open letter made by ABSD and two rest media need openness and transparency of ABSD’s polemics, 2) discourse practice described the eight of them agree with following ABSD’s statement while two others tried to express other issues surrounding the main issue of staff resignation, and 3) sociocultural practice revealed the emergence of a polemic in the conflicts of interest Skill Academy as a part of ABSD’s Ruangguru that becomes the partner of Pre-employment card. The implication of this study is necessary for CDA toward news content broadcasted on the online media, and tight filtration is a must. 本研究分析了在线新闻大众媒体对总统职员辞职新闻广播的批评话语。分别是:Detik.com、Kompas.com、cnndonesia.com、CNBCIndonesia.com、Nasionaltempo.com、Kumparannews.com、Liputan6.com、VOAIndonesia.com、MediaIndonesia.com和Republika.co.id。采用定性描述方法。然后采用Norman Fairclough的批评性话语分析理论指导下的内容分析程序对数据进行分析,包括文本分析、话语实践和社会文化实践。结果显示:1)文本分析揭示了8家网络媒体以ABSD的公开信为基础进行新闻报道,其余2家媒体需要ABSD的公开透明的言论;2)话语实践描述了其中8家网络媒体同意遵循ABSD的声明,而另外2家则试图围绕员工辞职这一主要问题表达其他问题。3)社会文化实践表明,技能学院作为ABSD的Ruangguru的一部分,成为就业前卡的合作伙伴,在利益冲突中出现了争论。本研究的启示是对网络媒体传播的新闻内容进行批评性分析的必要条件,严格的过滤是必须的。此外,书面和展示的新闻应该对读者实事求是。此外,媒体作为公共信息来源的行为应该是中立和公正的。因此,所呈现的消息是客观准确的

The method used was qualitative descriptive. Then data were analyzed using a content analysis procedure guided by the CDA theory of Norman Fairclough that involved text analysis, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. The result displayed 1) text analysis exposed that eight online media broadcasted the news based on open letter made by ABSD and two rest media need openness and transparency of ABSD’s polemics, 2) discourse practice described the eight of them agree with following ABSD’s statement while two others tried to express other issues surrounding the main issue of staff resignation, and 3) sociocultural practice revealed the emergence of a polemic in the conflicts of interest Skill Academy as a part of ABSD’s Ruangguru that becomes the partner of Pre-employment card. The implication of this study is necessary for CDA toward news content broadcasted on the online media, and tight filtration is a must. Hyponym Games in Enriching Students’ English Vocabulary: A Case Study in Junior High School 下义词游戏在初中英语词汇丰富中的应用

This study aimed to measure the effectiveness of Hyponym Games in improving the vocabulary mastery of 7th graders of SMP Muhammadiyah 01 Sukajaya. It was a quantitative study applying pre-experimental approach with one group of pre-test and post-test design. A total number of 30 students participated in this study. The results of t-test statistical data analysis revealed that in the pre-test, the average score gained by the students was 54, while in the post-test, the students obtained the average score of  74.73. Additionally, the calculation of the data showed that in the significance level of 0.05, tcalwas 7.0 with ttableof 1.701, or 7.0 > 1.701. Therefore, this study confirms that Hyponym Games are effective to enrich students’ vocabulary mastery.
本研究旨在考察下义词游戏对小学七年级学生穆罕默迪亚01 Sukajaya词汇掌握的提高效果。本研究采用预实验方法,采用一组前测和后测设计进行定量研究。共有30名学生参与了这项研究。t检验统计数据分析结果显示,学生在前测中平均得分为54分,在后测中平均得分为74.73分。此外,对数据的计算表明,在0.05的显著性水平下,tcal = 7.0, table = 1.701,或7.0 > 1.701。因此,本研究证实了Hyponym Games对于丰富学生的词汇掌握是有效的。

Apology Strategies in Situational Comedy: Ifid Analysis 情景喜剧中的道歉策略:Ifid分析

Sometimes when someone who has made mistakes or says a statement which causes offence to others, she/he needs to maintain that kind of situation in response by apologies. The research aims at describing the strategies of apology in situational comedy. The data of this research were collected from dialogues that consist of apology in The Big Bang Theory. The data were analyzed qualitatively by examining the theory of apology strategy by Cohen and Olshtain (1986). Findings have shown that there are five strategies of apology utterances namely IFID, IFID + Explanation, IFID + Explanation + Requests, IFID + Responsibility + Requests and IFID + Explanation + IFID.
