This study examines challenges experienced by Indonesian ESP teachers in face-to-face education system, and possible solutions they have deployed to tackle the challenges. An online survey was employed to discover challenges the ESP teachers perceived, which was then quantitatively analysed using SPSS software. Besides, semi-structure interviews were carried out to explore solutions the ESP teachers had deployed to resolve the challenges, which was then qualitatively analysed using coding system. The findings show that the ESP teachers are dealing with five major challenges with inadequate teaching material being the most challenging (M=3.15, SD=0.88) and unsupported institution system being the least challenging (M=2.34, SD=0.62). To tackle the challenges, the teachers employ several techniques such as adapting ready-made materials, collaborating with specific-subject teachers, and participating in relevant trainings, and asking for IT experts’ assistance. As the findings reveal, this study provides us with pedagogical implications such as the need of relevant trainings and adequate textbooks for ESP teachers and placement tests for ESP students. Some limitations and suggestions for future studies are also presented.

The study’s goal is to discover and to investigate how students’ grammatical knowledge and sense of self-worth influence their capacity for effective oral expression empirically. The researchers adopted a quantitative strategy and used a survey to gather information. Seventy-three students were selected at random from the population of students at selected Private Vocational High Schools in East Jakarta. In order to verify the hypotheses, a multiple regression analysis was performed. The study yielded the following findings. Self-Esteem and grammatical competence go hand in hand when it comes to a student’s ability to communicate clearly. The fact shows that Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05 and Fo= 25.662. Students' fluency with grammar has a major bearing on how well they can express themselves verbally since Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05 and to= 3.788 demonstrate this to be the case. Students' confidence in their own abilities has a major bearing on how well they can express themselves. This is evidenced by the congruence between the values Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05 and to= 4.921.

The present study intends to investigate the types of rewards given to learners in English as a second/foreign language (L2) classes and L2 learners' views on the possible effects of rewards on their engagement. The study employed a case study design with class observations and semi-structured interviews as the methods of data collection. Indonesian high school learners at a private university participated in this study. Through the observations, it was found that learners received three types of rewards: verbal praise, non-verbal praise, and social reward. From the interviews, it was found that rewards could make the learning atmosphere more fun and competitive as well as increase learners’ attentiveness. Nonetheless, rewards alone were not sufficient to engage learners in independent learning requiring them to exert more effort in their L2 learning process. Overall this study contributes to the understanding of rewards in the Indonesian high school L2 context which is thus far fairly under-researched. Among others, this study concludes that teachers should know what kinds of rewards, when and how they are delivered to best achieve the intended effects. Suggested directions for relevant studies in the field are also stated alongside the possible limitations of this study.

PRAAT can easily and rapidly improve the students’ ability in pronouncing monophthongs in phonetics class. The effectiveness of this software can help the students acquire quality monophthongs sounds. Furthermore, this software could reduce the problem of students learning sounds of monophthongs accurately such as the accuracy of F1 and F2 that is contained in monophthongs. It provided many programs on how to record, analyze, measure, and save in the wave file. This research aimed to investigate to what extent this software affects teaching monophthongs sounds in phonetics class for students. This research was conducted with 40 samples of students. They divided the class into 20 students for the control group and another 20 students for the experimental group. This quasi-experimental was to determine the best treatment before and after giving the treatment by using CALL for the experimental group and NON-CALL for the control group. Before using the software, the students were given the pre-test . Finally, they sat for post- test in the last meeting. The result was exposed through analysis of a t-test. It showed a significant difference in learning through PRAAT software (p<.05). In addition to that, teaching vowels sounds proved to be more successful using PRAAT than the traditional method.

Needs analysis as the basis of English for specific purposes (ESP) is deemed crucial to identify the target materials or languages used in the teaching-learning process and to design an effective curriculum. This study aims to investigate engineering students' needs for English-speaking materials in the English club program of one private university in Garut. To address the result of ESP analysis, the researchers used the descriptive qualitative method with questionnaires and interviews as the instruments. The need analysis result revealed that the English learning goal for the students in the English club program is to communicate actively in English. Their interest in learning English in this program is to improve their speaking ability to support their formal study as university students since it influences their academic performance and prepares them to fulfill the demands of job requirements in the future. Most students consider that the materials they need to learn are related to job life, academic purposes as engineering students, and social interaction. The result also suggests that the module created by the tutor for the English club program should focus on topics related to job life that are relevant to the current situation.

At the current, the usage of learning media is crucial in the sphere of education. Media integration has been used in the classroom by both students and teachers. To keep up with the digital shift in society, teachers must include technology in their lesson plans. For the instructor to establish an engaging teaching and learning process, using technology in the process becomes crucial and necessary. Quizizz has also developed into one of the web tools that instructors utilize in ELT classrooms. This study looks into how English teachers feel about utilizing Quizizz in their classes. A case study was chosen as the research design in this qualitative study. The researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with ten English teachers for prime schools in Medan and distributed the Likert scale questionnaire to get the data. This study found the perceptions of English teachers in utilizing the Quizizz application for young learners. The study investigated English teachers’ perceptions of the effectiveness, feasibility, the difficulty of utilizing Quizizz, how Quizizz can motivate the students, and the willingness of the teachers to continue using Quizizz in the English classroom. Briefly, the teachers perceive that Quizizz has benefits in teaching English even Quizizz has drawbacks too.

Many scholars have conducted research on error analysis in English writing. However, scientific research on errors in using English verbs in terms of tense and aspect is still in its early stages. As a result, the purpose of this study was to identify the errors or mistakes in sentence translation from Indonesian to English that were related to tense and aspects. 25 English department students sat in the English syntax class and translated 12 Indonesian sentences into English. The findings reveal a total of 126 errors in sentence translation in terms of tense and aspect. The past perfect continuous tense, past perfect tense, present perfect continuous tense, future perfect continuous tense, future perfect tense, and future continuous tense are the most common errors. These findings indicate that the students were unfamiliar with the formulas and functions of these tenses, as well as aspect interpretation. As a result, English lecturers/teachers should prioritize English tenses and aspects for EFL students from the start.

Self-confidence plays a pivotal role in public speaking, especially in English. Therefore, building students’ self-confidence is needed by using media including YouTube. The present study aims to elaborate on the role of YouTube in developing students’ self-confidence in English public speaking viewed from the student’s perspective. Further, some strategies used in developing students’ self-confidence are discussed. Using a qualitative method, the data of this study were gathered through a semi-structured interview with six students from the English Education Department of an Indonesian Islamic university. The findings reveal that most students have positive responses towards the use of YouTube as a medium to develop their self-confidence in English public speaking. In addition, they reported that YouTube plays a very crucial role in the development of their confidence in English public speaking. Importantly, they can comprehend the material more quickly, and develop their interest and motivation to learn. Finally, this study promotes the need for socialization from educational institutions in the development of English public speaking and the need to integrate the content of English public speaking with media and technology to enhance students’ learning success.
