Radiofrequency ablation of the superficial venous systems has become one of the mainstays of minimally invasive approaches to varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. These procedures have high rates of success with scarce complications. Radiofrequency obliteration of the subcutaneous veins can be a method of choice in patients with obesity.

Depression is commonly comorbid in cancer patients and has detrimental effects on disease progression. Evidence suggests that biological mechanisms may induce the onset of cancer-induced depression. The neuroprotective effects of lithium carbonate in conditions of peripheral tumor growth were analyzed. It was shown that peripheral tumor growth affects on the behavior and ultrastructural organization of prefrontal cortex neurons of the experimental animals. The phenomena of neurons cytoplasm swelling, decreasing of volume density of transport vesicles, autophagosomes, late endosomes and free polysomal ribosomes were noted. Oral administration of lithium carbonate leads to the accumulation of lithium in the structures of the brain, an increases the motional activity of animals and activates neuron systems of vesicular traffic and degradation.

The combination of somatic and visceral lymph nodes plays a leading role in the formation of the daily internal temporal order of the lymphoid system. Using the apparatus of mathematical modeling of the lymphocytes movement provides an integrative picture of the temporal organization of cellular and tissue kinetics of lymph nodes of different locations. Regional differences in the formation of daily biorhythms of cellular composition, activity of drainage systems, lymphoid structures and microenvironment of lymph nodes in connection with the rhythms of nutrition, motor activity, sleep-wakefulness are characterized. The influence of the genetic factor on the spatial-temporal organization of dynamic processes in the lymph nodes of different localization was revealed. The power and directivity of the fluxes of cellular movements, as well as the fluid balance cause different strength of the immune response of different phases of the daily cycle.

The field of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) emerged in the area of computer science due to transfer of ideas from biology and developed independently for several decades, enriched with techniques from probability theory, complexity theory and optimization methods. Our aim is to consider how some recent results form EA theory may be transferred back into biology. It has been noted that the EAs optimizing Royal Road fitness functions may be considered as models of evolutionary search for the gene promoter sequences from scratch. Here we consider the design of synthetic promoters from the EAs methodology viewpoint. This problem asks for a tight cluster of supposedly unknown motifs from the initial random (or partially random) set of DNA sequences using SELEX approaches. We apply the upper bounds on the expected hitting time of a target area of genotypic space, the EA runtime, in order to upper-bound the expected time to finding a sufficiently fit series of motifs (e.g. binding sites for transcription factors) in a SELEX procedure. On the other hand, using the EA theory we propose an upper bound on expected proportion of the DNA sequences with sufficiently high fitness at a given iteration of a SELEX procedure. Both approaches are evaluated in computational experiment, using a Royal Road fitness function as a model of the SELEX procedure for regulatory FIS factor binding site. Our results suggest that some theoretically provable bounds for EA performance may be used, at least in principle, for a-priory estimation of efficiency of SELEX-based approaches.

A new calculated index is proposed for estimating the volume of extracellular fluid in the soft tissues of the extremities: impedance fluid index (IFI). This indicator, calculated when performing bioempedance measurements of tissues, can be used to assess the severity and nature of the edema of tissues of any etiology. The use of the index for performing low-frequency phase-selective impedanceometry in patients with secondary (postmastectomic) lymphedema of the upper limb is described. The high informative value of the indicator was demonstrated, both in the initial diagnosis and in evaluating the effectiveness of the treatment.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) causes substantial pain, physical dysfunction and impaired quality of life. There is no cure for knee OA, and for some people, the disease may involve progressive symptomatic and structural deterioration over time. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a therapeutic agent that aims to address underlying biological processes responsible for OA pathogenesis. Thirty four women with 2nd or 3rd Kellgren-radiologic stage OA had been divided into 3 groups. All ones were treated by hyaluronic acid intra-articular injection. Fifteen patients (1st group) hadn’t got any additional treatment. AS was carried out for 6 peoples (2nd group). For 13 patients (3rd group) PRP intra-articular injections were used in common with medical AS. The growth of cartilage in the region of the upper pole of the patella was found in the 1st group after 3 months of treatment: mean values 1.84 vs. 2.39, p = 0.015. Positive dynamic was also detected at 3 and 6 months in the second (the mean values were 2.08 vs. 2.45 and 2.42, p=0.049) and third groups of patients (2.3 vs. 2.8 and 2.35, p=0.02). The cartilage thickness in the medial condyle of the tibia had increased at 3 and 6 months in the 2nd (the mean values were 1.61 vs. 2.11 and 1.98, p = 0.001) and 3rd group (1.66 vs. 2.01 and 1.89, p = 0.019). A change of the cartilage thickness in the lateral condyle of the tibia was not statistically significant in the all groups of patients. The pain level, stiffness, restriction decreased according to the questionnaire (WOMAC, Leken index) in all groups of patients. The clinical effectiveness of intra-articularly hyaluronic acid therapy and surgical methods of OA-treatment (medical AS) have been confirmed by ultrasound visualization and questionnaires.
