2-dimensional object recognition for the ISAC system 面向ISAC系统的二维目标识别

The intelligent soft arm control (ISAC) system is a voice-activated robotic aid for the physically disabled which involves the requirement for object recognition. The authors present a brief description of the ISAC system and describe work in 2-D object recognition and orientation. The research in object recognition involves the extraction of relevant information from digitized images. A binary image was processed by a nonrecursive segmentation algorithm to isolate each object. Next, two histograms were generated for each object found by the segmentation routine: a distance histogram about the object's center of mass and an orientation histogram. The distance histogram was used for identification of objects and the orientation histogram was used for finding their orientation. Additionally, a nonrecursive segmentation algorithm, a histogram-based recognition and orientation detection algorithm and a multivariate-discriminant-analysis-based recognition algorithm are described.<>

A hybrid performance monitor developed for MSPARC, a mesh-connected, message-passing multicomputer, is described. The development of the hybrid performance monitor was a cross-disciplinary enterprise requiring custom hardware and a range of software support including monitor code, driver interfaces, probe history acquisition and processing, graphical display, and application probe injection. Programmable hardware was designed to unobtrusively collect events on each node and maintain their accurate chronological order. This distributed collection system was coupled by its independent network to a central monitor where data selection and presentation techniques played an important role in the visualization of the parallel system's execution.<>

Acoustic scattering from two parallel soft cylinders 两个平行软圆柱体的声散射

The scattered field due to two parallel circular cylinders illuminated by a plane wave is formulated in terms of outgoing cylindrical waves emanating from each cylinder. Dirichlet boundary conditions are enforced on each cylindrical surface. Graf's addition theorem for cylindrical harmonics makes possible the closed-form evaluation of the coefficients in two infinite, coupled sets of linear equations for the unknown modal coefficients. Resultant far scattered fields in the frequency domain are graphed for several geometries and plane wave incidence angles. The effects of coupling between cylinders are studied via a comparison between far-field scatter computed by this accurate method and a noninteracting sum of the isolated cylinder responses.<>

Performance modeling of multiprocessors under correlated traffic 关联流量下多处理器性能建模

A traffic model is proposed which does not assume the mutual independence of memory requests generated by the processors within a memory cycle, to evaluate performance in shared memory multiprocessors. The authors derive expressions for the bandwidth of crossbars and some shared bus networks. A traffic model is presented called the 2/sup N/-ary symmetric traffic model to analyze the performance of multiprocessor systems in the presence of correlated traffic. Some numerical results are provided for both full and partial bus networks.<>

A reliable distributed system using dual level fault tolerance 采用双级容错的可靠分布式系统

A reliable distributed environment was developed by beginning with a working distributed environment (POSYBL) that contained no explicitly implemented fault tolerant techniques, and augmenting the system with a dual level of fault tolerance. This created the fault tolerant POSYBL environment. Surveying of several current fault tolerant techniques and estimating the amount of reliability each technique would make towards a reliable distributed system showed that there does not exist a single practical fault tolerant technique that would handle half of a certain set of reliability concerns. Addressing less than half of the set of reliability concerns does not make a system fault tolerant for that set of concerns. Therefore, more than one technique was used to create the fault tolerant POSYBL system, which handles a majority of the listed reliability concerns.<>

Characterization studies of deep levels in silicon doped copper diffused GaAs and their significance for bulk GaAs switches 掺硅铜扩散砷化镓深能级的表征研究及其对大块砷化镓开关的意义

Deep-level characterization studies have been carried out for silicon-doped copper-compensated gallium arsenide (GaAs:Si:Cu) which is used to fabricate bulk optically controlled semiconductor switches. A photoinduced current transient spectroscopy technique has been used to identify various deep levels present in GaAs:Si:Cu, and from the findings probable models for the copper-related complexes in GaAs are proposed. The effect of diffusion parameters on the formation of different copper deep levels has been studied. The influence of copper deep levels (Cu/sub A/ and Cu/sub B/) on switch performance is discussed.<>

Design of finite word length FIR digital filter using a parallel genetic algorithm 用并行遗传算法设计有限字长FIR数字滤波器

The application of a parallel genetic algorithm implemented with a Hypercube computer to design optimal finite-wordlength finite-impulse-response digital filters is described. Two examples of this application to the design of a Chebyshev low-pass digital filter are given. One example, describing a filter with a length of 40 coefficients and 10-b wordlength, is used for comparison to a previously reported identical design problem which was solved with a general-purpose integer programming algorithm. This comparison reveals that the genetic algorithm produces a better Chebyshev approximation to the desired frequency response. The second example describes the results of the application of the genetic algorithm to the design of a high-order filter developed for the processing of seismic signals. The characteristics of this second filter with 140 coefficients and a 16-b wordlength are compared to those obtained by a rounded-off method.<>

Exponential transient component analysis for speech modulation decomposition

A novel approach, the modulation decomposition method, to help solve the segmentation and identity problems in the development of a speech model, is described. The authors attempt to show the existence of exponential functions in the energy envelope of speech segments. These functions are expected to be basic units of acoustic modulations which can be used to model the kinematics of gestures in utterances. The possible relevance of these functions to components of speech signals was explored by comparing different signals with similar phonetic elements. Three different optimization methods are compared: the Powell method, a conjugate gradient method, and a modified Newton-Raphson (Levenberg-Marquardt) method.<>

Priority service disciplines and voice cell discarding schemes in ATM networks ATM网络中的优先业务规则和语音小区丢弃方案

Priority service disciplines and congestion control schemes for voice and data multiplexing with bursty inputs in asynchronous transfer mode ATM/SONET broadband networks are presented. The authors consider dynamic mapping of ATM cells in the SONET payload. They propose separate buffers for voice and data to efficiently control the throughput of each traffic type. Transmission bandwidth is dynamically shared between voice and data to guarantee grade of service (GOS) requirements for each traffic type. A selective voice cell discarding scheme is also considered for voice-data integration. The effects of voice cell discarding on network performance for integrated voice and data systems were analyzed by simulation. The results showed that the priority service disciplines, in combination with the voice cell discarding scheme, were very efficient methods to guarantee a GOS requirement for voice. The cell discarding scheme was shown to reduce cell losses as well as delays for data. It was found that the performance for data can be significantly improved by imposing the thresholds at both voice and data buffers.<>

Transmission bandwidth is dynamically shared between voice and data to guarantee grade of service (GOS) requirements for each traffic type. A selective voice cell discarding scheme is also considered for voice-data integration. The effects of voice cell discarding on network performance for integrated voice and data systems were analyzed by simulation. The results showed that the priority service disciplines, in combination with the voice cell discarding scheme, were very efficient methods to guarantee a GOS requirement for voice. The cell discarding scheme was shown to reduce cell losses as well as delays for data. Optimal power flow by linear programming based optimization 基于线性规划的最优潮流优化

Electric utilities in the United States utilize various linear programming techniques to achieve optimal power flow. The authors extend one such technique of linear programming based optimization for optimal power flow. Constraints for the slack bus are introduced and all branch and link flows are taken into account. This automatically puts each bus in the same flow state, thereby optimizing the entire system. Results show that a 220 kV five-bus system convergence within one iteration was achieved with a considerable reduction in CPU time. The technique has been recommended to Florida Power and Light Company's Power System Control Division and has proved successful for a 15 bus system using real-time data.<>
