Valuing care and self-care in higher education requires a conscious pause and rethinking of how we are together as educators and students. The pandemic caused various complexities, including changes in curriculum delivery, deadlines, and assessment modes, leading to feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, and change fatigue, which contributed to the emergence of panicgogy. This paper argues for the need to disrupt this way of being and experiencing the pandemic through valuing humanity and repositioning self-care and care by and for academics to inform their pedagogy. Presented is the narrative and the design story behind Pedagogy of Belonging (PoB), a systems informed framework that prioritizes relationships and humanizes teaching by placing students and educators at the center of curriculum and pedagogical decisions. PoB provides a pedagogical framework for progression throughout the teaching cycle. The paper suggests that PoB is a conscious pause, a contemplative practice that interrupts panicgogy, collective exhaustion, and disconnect in higher education. PoB repositions holistic education at the heart of what educators do, facilitating interconnectedness and encouraging a rethinking of care and self-care in higher education through the domain of belonging underpinned by relationships, engagement, and communication.

Background: The world battled with children’s needs during the pre-COVID-19 era, and their health and educational needs were amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic. This article highlights the reported impact of the pandemic on child health, the inequalities observed, the lessons learnt, and the way forward in the post-COVID era. Method: A narrative literature review was conducted. Articles from Google Scholar and PubMed were searched from 2015 upward. The reference lists of the included articles were also searched for more relevant studies. A descriptive analysis of the included studies was conducted to highlight the reported impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on child health. Results: During the pandemic, every child was not affected equally. Inequalities in child physical, mental and social health were observed more in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Similarly, child nutrition was adversely affected as school feeding programs were disrupted. Although the education of children was adversely affected globally, the impact was more in LMICs, where digital learning was not well-developed. This was also worse in insurgent countries with many out-of-school children. Conclusion: Efforts should be geared towards meeting children's physical, mental and social needs during pandemics, with a strong focus on children from developing countries. Similarly, the education of children should not be neglected. As efforts are directed towards meeting the needs of adults post-COVID, inequalities observed in child health during the pandemic should be addressed such that no child is left behind.

Introduction: Human actions on this planet have caused numerous changes and negative impacts on society and the ecosystem. Thus, the field of Planetary Health emerged with the need to adopt approaches that reconcile natural and human systems. However, this field of study is still little recognized in the internal and external environments of the scientific community and society in general, especially in developing countries. Objective: The objective is to provide a comprehensive view of publications on the actions and scenarios of higher education regarding planetary health that can help in the formulation of teaching plans on planetary health. This article aims to review and describe variables such as curriculum, workload, and main methods and approaches used in higher education on planetary health. Methods: This is a scoping review based on the evaluation of studies that address teaching methods in undergraduate health courses. The study was conducted in July 2022, in the electronic databases, Scopus, PubMed, and EMBASE, by the identification, selection, mapping, and summary of the included studies were carried out. Results: The articles included indicate that there are few reports of experiences in countries of the Global South and such curricula are especially focused on medicine and nursing courses. Conclusion: Current and future health professionals are not yet prepared for the challenges they will face regarding planetary health. Thus, the need to include this theme in curricula is urgent and should be considered a priority in new curriculum proposals.

Background: Nurses with inadequate clinical experience assume leadership positions as first-line managers in hospitals in Malawi due to shortage of Registered Nurses. It is presumed with support from senior nurse leaders, inexperienced nurses can lead successfully. Research suggests Supportive Leadership (SL) can positively influence performance. The study examined the effect of SL (mentoring, relationship building, team working, and positive work environment) on performance of Inexperienced Nurse Leaders (INLs) in the Central West Quality Satellite Zone Hospitals of Malawi. Methods: A convergent mixed methods design was used, with qualitative findings being presented. The sample was selected using purposive sampling. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with 10 Senior Nursing Officers (SNOs) and 10 INLs and was analysed using Collaizi’s thematic method. Ethical approval was granted by the National Commission for Science and Technology in Malawi. Results: SL promoted the performance of INLs. Mentoring empowered the INLs to lead though it was done inconsistently. The INLs acknowledged the presence of work relationships and collaborative healthcare teams in the wards/units. The work relationships and teams eased work and the INLs felt supported. The work environment was positive in some wards and non-conducive in others. The main challenges were a shortage of nurses, financial and material resources. Conclusion: The research results have shown the importance of SL of SNOs in the CWQSZ hospitals of Malawi despite the existing shortage of nurses, material, and financial resources. The leadership style promoted the performance of INLs. The results contribute to the existing limited body of knowledge of SL in nursing.

Reverse innovation is the flow of ideas from lower to higher income countries. This has received growing attention in healthcare research for its potential to provide cost-effective solutions to pervasive health inequities, human resource shortages and rising health expenditures. Even though the underlying premise has its merits, the use of the term itself has become controversial as some argue it implies that innovation normally flows in the other direction. In this commentary, we first discuss some of the criticisms voiced against the term. With these in mind, we subsequently make the case for an alternative approach and describe how we work to implement this in our own research project. More specifically, we suggest a move towards reciprocal innovation as a more equitable, mutually beneficial form of learning and knowledge sharing. We present the COMPASS (Community Health Workers for Primary Care Access) project which will provide an empirically grounded example of reciprocal innovation in practice. The aim of the COMPASS project is to adapt a community health worker intervention from Brazil and South Africa for implementation in Belgium. The project has the potential to provide valuable lessons for all parties involved.
我们将介绍 COMPASS(社区保健工作者促进初级保健普及)项目,该项目将为互惠创新的实践提供一个以经验为基础的范例。

Understanding Latine perceptions of gun violence prevention strategies across New Mexico: A conceptual paper

Gun violence within Latine communities in New Mexico is on the rise and shows no signs of slowing down. The disparities in gun violence experiences mirror the structural and social position factors which negatively and disproportionately impact Latine people. In response to firearm-related deaths nearly doubling over the last decade, New Mexican legislators have been pressured to implement gun violence prevention policies. However well intended, these strategies often fail to address the structural inequities that underlie the rise in gun violence within Latine communities. There is an urgent need for research to better understand the unique experiences of Latine persons and their experiences in both gun violence and prevention. From a social ecological perspective, examining the structural barriers and facilitators which impede Latine involvement in gun violence prevention is critical to interrupting the cycles which render this group more susceptible. A deeper understanding of the factors associated with both gun violence and prevention is crucial for developing informed and culturally sensitive policies and interventions. This conceptual paper explores theory and research to better understand how gun violence impacts Latine communities and creates a conceptual framework to improve healthcare workers’ ability to encourage empowerment and efficacy regarding Latine engagement in gun violence prevention efforts. The objective of this paper is to analyze research from disciplines in the social and health sciences focusing on the experiences of Latine persons and groups experiencing gun violence and engaging in gun violence prevention.

Background: Early and inappropriate messages regarding sexuality and marriage taught during adolescent initiation rituals teachings in Mozambique are considered a determinant of high rates of early marriage, adolescent pregnancy, and maternal mortality. The Alert Community for a Prepared Hospital implementation research project in Natikiri, Nampula, Mozambique (2016-2020) identified adolescent initiation rituals counsellors and traditional authorities as pertinent agents to provide sexual and reproductive health education to adolescents during the initiation rituals. Objective: Develop, apply, evaluate, and disseminate a modern, transformative education tool, about sexual and reproductive health and rights, for counselors to use with adolescents during initiation rituals in Northern Mozambique. Methods: This is an exploratory descriptive and intervention study, using mixed method approaches. Findings: Results suggest, the education tool was well accepted by rituals counsellors, community leaders and the adolescents who attended the initiation rituals. It was shown to improve adolescent’s knowledge and lead to a positive behaviour change in sexual and reproductive health and rights. Conclusions: This intervention may be replicated at a national level with a low cost and significantly contribute to reducing adolescent pregnancy and early marriages and improving maternal and child health.

This paper explores the effect of the banknote ban and GST, which were implemented within a span of 8 months in 2016-2017, on self-reported illnesses and healthcare consumption in India. The findings show that the increasing trend of self-reported illness from 1995-96 to 2014, reversed in 2017-2018. The reduction in healthcare consumption between 2014 and 2017-2018 is primarily within the private care sector rather than public care, indicating economic duress induced by the banknote ban and GST as its cause. The reduction in self-reported illness and healthcare consumption is more prolonged among the occupationally vulnerable. The reduction in reporting of illnesses, healthcare consumption, and out-of-pocket expenditure on health continued even after one-and-half years of the banknote ban; this may also have been exacerbated later by the implementation of GST. Data indicate that the condition of public healthcare deteriorated between 2014 to 2018. As a result, even though the weaker sections’ access to private healthcare diminished, they could not turn to public healthcare either, resulting in a reduction in overall healthcare consumption. The findings of this paper call for a robust, functioning, affordable public healthcare system in India for greater crisis resilience.

Post-secondary programs in health are strengthened when curricula and experiences are internationalized. Internationalization encourages students to think, advocate and practice globally; thus, preparing graduates to contribute to health beyond geo-political borders. However, designing and supporting international experiences in undergraduate health curricula can be challenging due to time and resource constraints, costs, language barriers, and collaborative processes within and across organizations; thus, internationalization is not easily achieved. The purpose of this report is to describe an initiative aimed at supporting undergraduate nursing student experiences in an international partnership program between a Brazilian and Canadian university. First, we describe the project. Second, we present the context of the two partnering undergraduate nursing programs and their respective communities. Third, students from each school describe their experiences with the initiative. Fourth, we integrate our experiences with literature to offer three lessons for moving forward using a framework of resource allocation, fair trade learning, and decolonized competencies. Our report is timely as worldwide, universities are eager to build collaborative partnerships with stakeholders to implement internationalization within curricula. Such partnerships can help students learn about health-related experiences for populations living in distinctive social inequality and inequities in accessing health services.
