Urinary Catheter Dependent Loops as a Potential Contributing Cause of Bacteriuria: An Observational Study.
Pub Date : 2016-01-01
Phil Wuthier, Karen Sublett, Lance Riehl

Urologic studies suggest that urinary catheter dependent loops (tubing low points) may be a contributing cause of bacteriuria and urinary tract infection among catheterized patients. The means by which this type of contaminant transmission occurs, however, remains poorly understood. An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted to provide a foundational look at catheter dependent loops and their possible role in catheter-acquired urinary tract infections, and as a building block for further research.

A secondary analysis was performed to characterize the health literacy of bladder cancer survivors. A cluster of patients was identified that is less healthy and may have more health literacy needs.

Skeletal Health Part 1: Overview Of Bone Health and Management In the Cancer Setting.

Cancer-induced bone disease and cancer therapy-induced bone loss are significant skeletal problems related to the treatment for urological and other cancers. Our team of specialists and nurse practitioners developed a nurse practitioner-led Bone Support Clinic for urologic cancer patients at a university hospital in London, England, United Kingdom, to address this issue. The clinic has been well-accepted, has made a positive impact on the patient journey, helps to ensure continuity of care, and highlights patients who require assessment or treatment for impending skeletal-related events in a timely fashion. This article has been divided into two parts for improved readability.

Diabetes Mellitus Review.
Pub Date : 2016-01-01
Meg Blair

Diabetes mellitus is a group of physiological dysfunctions characterized by hyperglycemia resulting directly from insulin resistance, inadequate insulin secretion, or excessive glucagon secretion. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disorder leading to the destruction of pancreatic beta-cells. Type 2 diabetes (T2D), which is much more common, is primarily a problem of progressively impaired glucose regulation due to a combination of dysfunctional pancreatic beta cells and insulin resistance. The purpose of this article is to review the basic science of type 2 diabetes and its complications, and to discuss the most recent treatment guidelines.

When only physicians are trained to insert Coudé catheters, there is an increased burden to both the patient and the providers. Training nurses for placement of Coudé catheters can improve care and allow for better use of health care resources.

Risk Factors for Nosocomial Bacteremia Secondary to Urinary Catheter-Associated Bacteriuria: A Systematic Review.
Pub Date : 2015-07-01

A systematic appraisal of evidence suggests that male patients in hospital may be at higher risk for bacteremia following urinary catheter-associated bacteriuria than females. Other risk factors include immunosuppressant medication, red blood cell transfusion, neutropenia, malignancy, and liver disease.
