Childhood obesity is a serious public health challenge, and there is limited evidence to show which pre-school interventions may prevent its occurrence. This study assessed whether selected factors, including contact with the Starting Well 0–19 service for children aged 1–3 years in north-west England, influenced children's risk of being overweight at primary school entry. It found that families with the most contact with the service (an integrated health visitor and children's centre offer) were more at risk. The findings show that the focus of these contacts does not positively influence risk factors for later overweight prevalence. The study findings replicate a known association between deprivation and children being overweight. Families having the highest contact levels with the Starting Well service had a significant association with their children being overweight at entry to primary school. This provides an opportunity to target these families with healthy lifestyle interventions and reduce the potential risk of childhood obesity.

In recent decades, a societal shift in paternal parenting has influenced family health, wellbeing and child development, with modern fathers appearing to have greater caregiver responsibilities compared to previous generations. This article aims to explore the paternal influences of father–child relationships on school readiness. Ten studies were critically reviewed from the literature. The findings suggest that positive father–child play interactions influence child development. Warm, sensitive and supportive parenting was recognised to promote child development and facilitate school readiness. Health visitor practice was explored and it is concluded that effective public health approaches must be used to ensure father-inclusive practice so that children's school readiness can be facilitated.

Despite the well documented risk factors for dental caries, the condition is common, affecting just under a quarter of 5-year-old children in England. Dental caries can have a significant impact on a child's oral health and general wellbeing. However, the condition is largely preventable, and healthy dietary choices and good oral hygiene practices are key to preventing development of dental caries. Often, risk factors are well established prior to a child being seen by a dental professional. Promoting healthy choices from infancy is key in reducing prevalence of the condition. However, with difficulty accessing dental care in the UK increasingly reported, other health professionals, such as health visitors, have a pivotal role in raising awareness of the condition, providing advice and signposting to dental care.
