Parents' management of childhood fever: An exploratory quantitative study in Malta 父母对儿童发烧的管理:马耳他的探索性定量研究
Pub Date : 2023-06-02 DOI: 10.12968/johv.2023.11.6.248
Esther Borg, Corinne Scicluna Ward
Every child will, at some stage in their development, experience a febrile episode that their caregiver will have to manage. Literature has reported that parents tend to misdiagnose fever, administer antipyretics incorrectly and become overly anxious about their child when febrile. This study aimed to explore the fever management behaviours of parents in Malta. A quantitative, explorative cross-sectional study was conducted in Malta's acute hospital, Mater Dei, by distributing questionnaires to parents of children aged 6 months–5 years. The results showed that although most Maltese parents diagnose fever at the correct temperature, many are not aware of the correct evidence-based practices for safe pharmacological and non-pharmacological fever management. It is concluded that more dissemination of information is needed to educate and empower parents to manage fever effectively through health professionals other than paediatricians.

Breastfeeding Experiences of Women Who have Survived Intimate Partner Violence 亲密伴侣暴力幸存者的母乳喂养经历

Breastfeeding has multiple benefits for women who have survived intimate partner violence (IPV), but little is known about the experiences of women in this population and the impact that IPV has on the breastfeeding journey. This pilot study aimed to explore the lived experiences of breastfeeding mothers who have survived IPV. Two women who had survived IPV and were breastfeeding participated in an online semi-structured interview, which invited them to share their expectations of breastfeeding, their birth experiences, positive and challenging breastfeeding experiences, the kinds of support they received, and advice they wanted to share with health professionals and other women. An interpretative phenomenological analysis identified three themes from the interviews: identity and sense of self; isolation; and the impact of support. Despite being a challenging process, breastfeeding was an empowering experience that facilitated a sense of purpose and identity, something IPV had deconstructed.
