The Healthy Child Wales Programme requires health visitors to screen for domestic violence and abuse (DVA), providing an opportunity to search for health needs, as defined by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Open conversations, observation and assessment begin during the antenatal period as pregnant women are at a high risk of DVA during this time. Although women want to be asked about DVA, many do not disclose their experiences. Consequently, health visitors may struggle to recognise DVA, asking inadequate questions and responding ineffectively. This article outlines the findings of a policy analysis exercise and a literature review to shed light on ways in which health visitors support women who are victims of DVA. It identifies three themes: confidence; disclosure; and support. The review concludes that health visiting and midwifery services would benefit from working more collaboration and better information sharing to ensure that women are supported appropriately and to improve outcomes.

There is a shortage of health visitors in the UK due to attrition and a lack of new recruits to training. Until now, there has been little research into why qualified nurses are not training to become health visitors. Therefore, an online survey was conducted among undergraduate nursing students at a university to explore their perceptions of health visiting. The survey results show a lack of knowledge about health visiting and some misconceptions, particularly among mental health nursing students. Conclusions drawn from the study are that undergraduate student nurses would benefit from further exposure to health visiting during their nursing programmes.

This article examines the need for innovation in the form of Practice Assessment Documentation (PAD) in SCPHN education following developments in undergraduate nursing and midwifery programmes across the UK, alongside regional demand and poor historical practice. To successfully identify the evidence base for this development, a critical appraisal of several papers from the available literature was undertaken to examine aspects such as the value and contribution which technology generates in the enhancement of student learning, and the theoretical drivers from both an educational and professional perspective. The article concludes there is a necessity for this development in meeting the educational needs of students, while increasing the robustness of the assessment process for assessors. This paper aims to drive the development of a national SCPHN PAD in accordance with the new Nursing and Midwifery Council's Standards of Proficiency and plans to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed SCPHN PAD at the end of the upcoming academic year 2022/23.
