The IEEE 488 bus is fast becoming the data communications standard in instrumentation industries. A system developed at Cranfield Institute of Technology allows a DEC LSI-11, a Texas Instruments TMS 9900 based microcomputer and two KIM-1 hobbycomputers to be linked in a mini-network mode. This system is the subject of the paper. To detect possible data transmission errors a number of methods are considered and the checksum method is implemented. In the LSI-11 microcomputer data transactions for the two protocols, software polling and interrupt, are demonstrated. The hardware used to construct the interfaces is fully detailed and the logic of the software is described.

The design of a real-time analyser for performing fast Fourier transforms is described. Data are gathered at regular intervals without breaks for servicing the purpose-designed Fourier computer, which is used at the maximum speed permitted by this device. Three DMA devices are used to perform input, output and service of the Fourier computer. Separation of the real and complex parts and bit reversal are carried out by unusual wiring of the DMA devices to achieve the necessary speed with relatively few components.

The paper describes the arrangements by which it is possible to operate a wide variety of wind tunnel instrumentation using a single desk-top microcomputer. Various types of instrumentation are introduced and illustration is given of how they are interfaced with the microcomputer.

Practical concerns such as cost, reliability and testability in electronic systems design receive scant attention in some of the establishments responsible for the education and training of engineers. The paper suggests ways in which the educational needs of designers and test engineers in the field of computer technology might be met more effectively.

Structured programming is presented as a specific discipline of software engineering. The history of this discipline up to the mid-1970s is summarised and three subsequent approaches to its theory and practice are described. The emphasis is on providing a working familiarity with the underlying concepts and how they are formalised.

The architecture of the Intel iAPX 432 system has two major innovative characteristics: hardware support for object-oriented programming, and fault-handling mechanisms implemented on the chip. A previous paper has dealt with the former characteristic; the present paper describes the latter class of features, which allow massive redundancy to be implemented with a small number of chips. Another prominent characteristic of the iAPX 432 is the ability to automatically reconfigure itself using only hardware components; in this way the system-down periods can be much reduced and the traffic of messages reporting the occurrence of faults not recoverable by the hardware is considerably lessened.

Recent developments in microelectronic technology, particularly the microprocessor, have resulted in interesting developments for automatic control of transport machines, such as locomotives and aircraft. The paper considers the convenience of this technology in a `domestic? application: the control, indirectly, of the distance between vehicles in foggy weather and dark, obscured conditions. An easily available Doppler radar module and ultrasonic transducers are used jointly as remote sensors.
