. The use of electronic cigarettes is becoming increasingly popular among Mexican adolescents and young adults. The lung injury associated with the use of this device is well recognized and has already caused the death of a young adult in our country, likewise, in the United States it has reached an epidemic level with thousands of people affected and dozens of deaths. The pathophysiology of this disease has not been elucidated due to the numerous compounds added to these cigarettes, but diluents such as vitamin E acetate added to tetrahydrocannabinol are particularly relevant. The diagnosis of this entity is mainly one of exclusion in patients with a history of use of these products, and signs and symptoms of lung injury. Management is essentially supporting treatment, considering also more prevalent pulmonary infections. Health professionals should insist on the suspension of electronic cigarette use.

The measurement of maximal inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory (MEP) pressures assess the strength of the respiratory muscles. These test are a simple, quick, and noninvasive. It consists that the patient must generate peak inspiratory (from residual volume) and expiratory pressure (from total lung capacity) against an occluded system. MIP assesses the diaphragmatic strength; while MEP assess the intercostal and abdominal muscles. Maximum respiratory pressures are of great clinical utility in the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases affecting the respiratory muscles. In order to improve quality and facilitate the realization of the measurement of MIP-MEP, we review international recom- mendations on this procedure and issue local guidelines that contribute to a better standardization process.

. Introduction: Pulmonary tuberculosis (TBP) is a chronic infectious disease that impairs the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of the patients who suffer from it. Sonora ranks second in national morbidity and third in mortality from TBP, but to our knowledge it has not been evaluated how HRQOL affects patients with TBP at the local level. Objective: To evaluate HRQOL in adults ≥ 18 years of age with confirmed TBP seen at health centers in Hermosillo, Sonora. Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study with 46 subjects, to whom the validated Short Form 36 questionnaire (SF-36v2) was applied to examine their HRQOL. The outcomes were compared according to the variables gender, phase of treatment phase (intensive/support) and comorbidities (present/absent); sociodemographic aspects such as occupation, education and family income were also described. Results: HRQOL was significantly lower in women, patients in intensive phase and those who had comorbidities. The most notorious deterioration occurred in physical aspects and the perception of global health. Conclusion: Subjects with TBP perceived deterioration in their HRQOL, but pharmacological treatment exerts a positive effect on their well-being.

. Lung cryptococcosis is a rare entity whose epidemiology hasn’t been entirely reported in Mexico. It is frequently found as a complication of HIV or other cases of immunosuppression. We present a case of a young immunocompetent man who debuted with neurological manifestations and was later found to have a giant lung cryptococcoma. This is a particularly interesting case because although the clinical manifestations were normal, the patient was not immunocompromised and the lung damage was important with later development of meningitis that led to complications and a lung resection.
