Governments around the world have enacted bans on the sale of new gasoline-powered cars, some starting in just a few years. But those bans may be counterproductive. Gasoline stores energy better than any battery ever will. Using internal combustion engines (within limits) to power electric cars will make those cars more useful to more people. Putting our small, light, powerful gasoline engines in a trailer with a battery and some smart power electronics will let people use gasoline engines only when needed—to cure electric car drivers of range anxiety and to untether their electric cars (at least occasionally) from grid power for long road trips. All while helping to increase the number of all-electric miles driven as electric cars take over the roads.

A challenge in the domain of creative story generation is generating stories that reflect a consistent theme or genre. We present GREEN, a computational creative (CC) system designed to generate short stories whose genre is customized to a user’s tastes in literature. Given a book title, GREEN uses association rule mining to identify appropriate book recommendations from which to train a long short-term memory model (LSTM) to then produce a new short story. The system forms its intention based on the user’s input, thereby aiming to generate artifacts that will be of value and interest to the user. We report the results of a preliminary survey that serves to demonstrate that as a proof of concept the system shows promise in its ability to achieve its defined intentions.Source: https://github.com/delaneyemoore/GREEN-system

Identifying and controlling of additive manufacturing processes has the potential to improve part quality during the build process. The melt pool size of direct energy deposition processes has been related to part quality. In this paper, we investigate the use of system identification tools to device closed-loop controllers that are capable of regulating the melt pool size during the build process. Based on the results of linear models, machine learning approaches are investigated with the goal to obtain higher fidelity models, capable of characterizing the nonlinearities existing in such processes. In addition, a reinforcement learning controller is proposed that can accommodate the nonlinear behavior and the initial uncertainty in the model. Experiments with a direct energy deposition setup show improved part geometry using the linear model and controller. Simulation results employing the developed reinforcement learning controller show promise in enhanced control performance.

Civil engineering students learn to analyze, design, and build to meet the needs of human society, which is dynamic in nature. The concept of a more sustainable and resilient human-centered development resonates with many people and has caused a global shift of focus to a three-part sustainability concept incorporating economic, social, and environmental aspects. Are civil engineering students educated on those significant movements? A structured literature search is performed to examine current research on the topic of integrating sustainability into civil engineering curricula. This paper reports that environmental aspects of sustainability in civil engineering education are noted twice as frequently as the social and economic aspects of sustainability. Evidence suggests that economic aspects, while noted less frequently, are embedded in current engineering decision-making practices. However, there are no consistent metrics for including and evaluating social aspects into civil engineering education in analysis, design, and construction. This unbalanced approach will continue to undermine future civil engineers and their impacts in the built environment. This paper argues for changes in the ways sustainability, and in particular social aspects, are included within civil engineering curricula.

This work presents a study which aims to indicate the most suitable locations for 23 charging stations planned to be installed in the state of Santa Catarina (Brazil). These facilities are part of the project “Development and Commercial Implementation of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations with Solutions for V2H/V2G”. The work also addresses the demand for infrastructure in the state related to the number of electric vehicles projected for Brazil until the year 2034. The Bass diffusion curve methodology estimated the future demand for charging equipment, with the further analysis of the current scenario to assess the availability of the electric vehicle charging service in Santa Catarina. Subsequently, an analysis is made of the geographic distribution necessary for the equipment to properly serve the conductors, on which the allocation decision is made with the aid of the AHP methodology in conjunction with criteria selected by the project researchers.

The final goal of this project is to design an advanced robotic sampling mechanism that can be deployed by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to obtain small objects. The focus of this part of the research is only on designing the lightweight, foldable robotic arm for this system. The arm will be designed to utilize Sarrus linkages to efficiently retract and extend. This arm has one degree of freedom and the motion in this arm can be controlled by torsional springs and one actuator. In the final design, the arm, initially, will be in the retracted position, which will allow it to be stored in a streamlined case to minimize interference with the objects in the path of the drone as it flies. Once the drone has reached the desired location, the arm will extend to its full length to reach the target object. In this paper, a foldable arm has been completely analyzed, designed in SolidWorks, and a prototype of it was built and successfully tested. In the next stage of this project, a novel gripper would be designed for this mechanism.

As the needs of industry and research change, computer science education has gradually begun to incorporate a more intense concentration on theoretical discussions surrounding, among others, automaton theory, NP-Completeness, and reduction theory. These concepts have repeatedly been ranked as some of the most difficult concepts in computer science education by students. This is largely due to the abstract nature of the material along with the perceived lack of industry applicability. In order to bridge this pedagogical gap, this paper showcases a visual tool developed to teach students of computational theory the reduction process. The application allows students to dynamically generate the reduction between 3SAT and CLIQUE. The tool is developed to allow for any 3SAT input. This allows students to explore how changes applied to an instance of one problem impact are reflected in the reduced instance of a second problem. Results are presented and we demonstrate a working implementation of the visualization tool. Further work still needs to be done to expand on intractability and implement additional problems.

Understanding long-term trends in water quality is essential for effective and sustainable management of waterbodies. Using remotely-sensed data, we generated and analyzed a 40-year history of estimated chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentrations on Utah Lake, which experiences intense algal blooms and is currently the subject of significant controversy over potential remediation strategies. To investigate the potential impacts of shoreline development and WWTP effluent streams on chl-a concentration, which is an indicator of algal biomass, we compared trends and average concentration estimates for different regions of the lake. For the majority of the lake, there is a very small, statistically significant decreasing trend in chl-a concentrations over the last 40 years, and regions receiving WWTP effluent show little difference from regions with undeveloped shoreline. One region (a shallow bay isolated from the rest of the lake) has both higher average concentrations and a significant positive trend over the 40 years, and appears to be influencing the areas of the lake connected to it. These results indicate that other factors besides nutrient inflows are likely driving algal blooms on Utah Lake, and further research is necessary to understand the lake processes and characteristics that influence these blooms.

These results indicate that other factors besides nutrient inflows are likely driving algal blooms on Utah Lake, and further research is necessary to understand the lake processes and characteristics that influence these blooms.","PeriodicalId":251518,"journal":{"name":"2022 Intermountain Engineering, Technology and Computing (IETC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128459036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
