Synoptic and Numerical Studies for Simulating Weather Instabilities that Affect The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Winter: I. The Synoptic Case Study@@@دراسة سينوبتيكية وعددية بغرض محاكاة عدم استقرار جوي يؤثر على أجواء المملكة العربية السعودية

A study of a weather phenomenon was carried out, where inter- action between middle latitude and tropical waves had occurred. The goal of this study was to simulate the interaction using a numerical model. The phe- nomenon occurred under winter synoptic regime and could lead to wide spread showers over a band that cover most of the kingdom. A detailed synoptic de- scription of a case, where the interaction had occurred over west Africa, was discussed. It was shown that the invasion of cold air to the south of 30oN was a necessary trigger action for such interaction. In this case a south wind com- ponent was developed due to air mass thermal differences. The developed wind component caused a change in the direction of the subtropical jet from westerly to south-west. This caused northerly advection of moist air from the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) where deep convective cells existed. When a polar frontal system passed through the subtropical region and came in phase with the axis of the advected moisture tongue, rapid development of the system had occurred. In this case an active cloud band was formed and ex- tended from the tropics to the middle latitude wave.

Enhancement of shoot tip multiplication and rooting formation in micropropagation of Yucca elephantipes under different concentrations of BA and IBA. 不同浓度BA和IBA对象丝兰芽尖增殖和生根形成的促进作用。

. This study was conducted in the tissue culture laboratory at the Department of Arid Land Agriculture, Faculty of Meteorology, Environment and Arid Land Agriculture, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah. It aimed to study the effect of BA and IBA concentrations on shoot tips multiplication and rooting formation under Murashige and Skoog medium with Yucca elephantipes micropropagation. The results showed that BA with 2, 3 and 1 mg/l concentrations produced the highest number of developed vegetative branches with values of 8.750, 6815 and 5.625, respectively, but the zero BA did not produce any developed branches. No significant differences were shown for the vegetative branches heights under the effects of the studied BA concentrations (from 1 to 7mg/l). Also, the effects of IBA concentrations on rooting of plantlets of Yucca elephantipes roots under the Murashige and Skoog medium were studied. The results showed that the 1 mg/l IBA produced the highest number of roots (18) and equally significant with the 0.6 mg/l IBA which produced 14 roots. But it differed from the 0.2 and 0.4 mg/l concentrations which produced 10 roots. The highest root length was produced from the concentrations of 1 and 0.4 mg/l IBA with values of 15.666 cm and 14.813 cm, respectively.

Effect of Supplemental Nitrogen and Incubation Periods of Animal Manures on Sorghum Growth and Soil Properties@@@تأثير النيتروجين والتحضين للمخلفات الحيوانية على نمو الذرة الرفيعة وخواص التربة

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of N amendments. incubation period and manure type on the dry matter production and its content of N, P and K, in sorghum and to detect recent changes in the chemi cal properties of the soil as influenc ed by these param eters. Results revealed that , under all manure types. dry matter yield of sorghum for the first crop was significantly higher than that of the second. Longer incubation periods for chicken and cow manures significantly reduced the dry matter yield compared with the shorter incub ation periods. Und er all manure types, N and P uptake in contrast tothatof K was significantly decreased with prolonging incubation period . Soil organ ic matter content. C:N ratio and soil N , P and K cont ent , were significantl y increased; whereas its pH was reduced ; on the application of each of the studied manures . Meanwhile. prolonging the incubation period had negative effects on C:N ratio and on dry matter of t~e soil and its clement contents. Effects on pH , on the other hand were positive . N-amendment showed no significant effect s.

This study was conducted to determine stage of maturity of prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) fruits in EI-Taif (AI Hada) area. Saudi Arabia. during 1989-1990 seasons. The physical and chemical fruit characters studied were: fruit length, diameter, weight, size, pulp weight, the percentage of pulp weight of total fruit weight, weight of fruit coat, the total soluble solids (TSS), acidity and the percentage ofTSS to acidity and moisture content. The results indicated that under El-Taif environment prickly pear fruits are considered mature and withstand handling and marketing operations after 77-84 days from fruit setting.
本研究对哈达地区刺梨果实的成熟期进行了测定。沙特阿拉伯。1989-1990年季节。研究了果实的理化性状:果实长、直径、重量、大小、果肉重量、果肉重量占果实总重量的百分比、果皮重量、总可溶性固形物(TSS)、酸度、TSS与酸度的百分比和水分含量。结果表明,在El-Taif环境下,坐果后77 ~ 84 d即为成熟果实,可经受处理和销售操作。

ABSTRAC r.. Four eggplant cultivars nam ely Black Beauty (BB), Long Purple (LP) , Florida Mark et (FM) , Egyptian White (EW) were used to test the effect of drought on morphological and physiological trait s under field conditions during summ er and spring seasons in 1991·92, Drought stre ss reduced plant height , leaf area , number of leaves , number of branche s, stem diameter, leaf dr y weight and root dr y weight during both seasons. Significant differences were observed among differ ent eggplant cult ivars in their response to seasonal variation causing substantial effect on plant growth. High temp erature associated with drou ght stress during summer caused more plant injuri es than spring season . Florida Market (FM) cultivar showed more toler ance to stress than other eggplant cultivars in most morphological and physiological traits. It appears from the result s that an improvement in eggplant cultivarscould be made throu gh breeding program .

A preliminary estimation of groundwater recharge in Namman basin. 南满盆地地下水补给的初步估算。

Abstract. In this paper, a simulation of a one-dimensional water movement in soil layers using Wave Model is presented. The model is utilized to investigate the groundwater recharge at varoius soil depths of Namman basin in western Saudi Arabia. The basin was divided into 35 sub-basins and the model was applied to the alluvial soils of the channels of the sub-basins. The study assumed that rainfall on moutainous areas of the basin will be transfered to the channels very fast and added to the direct rainfall as an accumulated water depth on the alluvium. Data of soil properties, soil-water relationship, rainfall and potential evaporation were collected for the study region and used by the model to estimate volumes of surface runoff, abstractions and groudwater recharge. Daily rainfall data for 1975 and 1980 which had largest and smallest annual rainfall depths during the period of the available rainfall records were used in the study. The results of the study indicated that values of infiltration rate were very high in most of the surface soil in the basin and their average was about 98% of rainfall volume. Most of runoff in Namman basin is produced by Yarij sub-basin and about a quarter of the hydrologic abstrations is contributed by Al-Shara sub-basin. Majareesh sub-basin has the largest contribution to groundwater rechage of Namman basin, while Arar and Yarij sub-basins have the smallest contributions. The study suggested a linear realtionship between groudwater recaharge volume and soil depth.
