This chapter considers the impact of ‘realist’ international relations theories and their influence on the security policies of the great powers in particular. Also considered are broadly Marxist approaches, which continue to have important things to say about the impact of an inherently expansionary capitalist system within finite planetary boundaries.

This chapter examines the psychological dimensions of security issues, both in explaining why people feel insecure, and how personal traits may affect policy-making. Also considered are the general influences of national and strategic cultures, which help to explain the content of different approaches to security problems.

This chapter spells out the environmental challenges and problems which are making traditional approaches to security problematic, if not dangerous. It explains why necessary international cooperation has proved so difficult to achieve, despite its increasingly obvious necessity. It is suggested that the EU is still the best example of international institutional cooperation, despite its current problems.

This chapter looks at the influence of liberal and constructivist international theories. Despite liberalism’s normative appeal and the pacifying affect of economic interdependence, it looks increasingly unsustainable. Likewise, while constructivists usefully highlight the possible importance of ideas, it is not clear that ‘good’ ideas about environmental security will necessarily prevail.
