Sexual counseling of clients with health problems which interfere with desired sexual expression is gaining momentum. This article examines one phase of the social work helping process- assessment when information is sought which will guide social work activities. The interaction of sex, impairment, disability and handicap is examined, and a classification of the various ways disability adversely affects aspects of sexuality is presented. Basic components of the assessment process are discussed, as well as considerations of timing and guidelines for assessment interviewing.

The social worker's clinical skills and philosophy are precisely the ones required for counseling the disabled about sexuality. We are all socialized with sexual misinformation and biases, so the worker must first learn a full understanding of the broad range of activities and feelings that are possible. Case examples help illustrate perspectives and potentials to be considered.

With the proliferation of mature sexual themes and erotic movies being telecast into the homes of the American public, a study was undertaken to understand the nature of interaction between Catholic parents and their teenage daughters about sexual topics in general and around coincidental television viewing. The results indicate that, depending upon whether it is the father or the mother involved with the daughter and the degree of liberalism of the parents, different patterns of communication about sexuality occur.

Social Workers have historically been presented by clients with a wide range of sexual issues. It is therefore consistent with traditional patterns of our helping profession to be of assistance in the task of working with sexual dysfunctions as well. To abdicate this responsibility encourages the proliferation of non-clinical sex technicians who may often worsen a problem situation rather than relieve it. Sexual difficulties can seriously impair a marital relationship and can erode an individual's well-being and vocational competence. This paper will elaborate on the above. It will also present an overview .of the field of sex therapy, schematically organizing three levels of therapeutic intervention. Case illustrations and other data . .will be used to better differentiate the types and approaches of intervention.: The paper will also discuss what additional preparation may be essential so as to enable Social Work practitioners to develop the competency to successfully work with the full range of human s...

The first 1,000 admissions to a "low medical" social setting detoxification center were screened to identify (self report) those patients who had experienced two or more experiences of sexual dysfunction within the preceding twelve months. Following detoxification, all subjects were exposed to two one-hour orientation sessions (to alcohol as a drug and alcoholism as a disease process). The experimental group received twelve individual sessions (1% hours weekly) specifically focused on their particular sexual dysfunction. The control group received twelve individual sessions (1 % hours weekly) with primary emphasis on their alcohol problems. No specific focus was given to their sexual dysfunction. Obtained differences between groups demonstrated a clear superiority in sexual functioning for the experimental group. Although significant differences were not obtained, the control group had twice the dropout rate of the experimental group. A few significant relationships were found between drug usage and type ...

The article sets forth one possible explanation of the dynamics of victimization of women, using a feminist perspective. The relationship between sexism and violence in present society is explored, using the concept of abuse as an extension of the power differentials between men and women generally. Attention is directed to the history and types of mechanisms used by the mental health professions, specifically social work, to deny the frequency, intensity, and effects of violence on women. A general overview of recent literature presents new information for the social worker on the incidence and etiology of female victimization and how this new information can be applied to clinical practice and program development. Suggestions are made for social workers: to become involved in changing the sexist order; to prioritize specialized, accessible recovery services for women who have been violently abused; to advocate for women on an individual and systems basis; to motivate women to fight for these changes the...

This paper addresses the problems and solutions of human sexuality and aging within a social work context. Prior to any serious consideration of this undertaking, it is imperative to examine the literature on the physiology of aging and the sexual apparatus. Psychological and social phenomena do not occur in isolation. In the area of human sexuality, it is particularly important to consider the relationship between the physical and the non-physical. The major portion of this paper deals with the psychosocial aspect of human sexuality and aging. All the literature suggests that this psychosocial aspect is the dominant issue. Unfortunatelv, the published literature offers little organization in examining the psychosocial actions to the effects of aging on sexuality. As a result, this review attempts to categorize the human problems related to sexuality and the elderly. Traditional perspectives on aging are used in explaining and for providing solutions to the problems of aging and sexuality.
