In collaboration with members of a Ju/’Hoansi community in Namibia, we have co-created a gesture-controlled VR application of a hunting story, as told by an elder in the village, demonstrated in the field by an elder and youth, as well as 3D models and scenes described and designed by community members and interpreted by the researchers. The story has been implemented in VR using the Unity game engine. The application consists of a number of scenes, where the user progress in the story, either through object interactions, or through hand gesture interactions with the Non-player characters. The application was validated by the community youth and elders, in regards to expectation of cultural appropriate representation, gesture interactions and narrative immersion.

While the workplace collaboration software market is booming, existing tools are often tech-focused and rarely support reflection and self-regulation of collaboration practices. Building on approaches from personal informatics, we aim to understand and promote the use of data to empower employees in exploring their own work practices, with a focus on collaboration processes. This study focuses on the preparation stage and examines what aspects of collaboration are meaningful to office workers. We interviewed employees from a single work team (N= 15) after a 2-weeks reflecting period on metrics related to collaboration experience. We contribute new insights into how employees envision metrics reflecting their collaboration experience and what personal, social, and organizational considerations surround collecting and sharing this data. We discuss how these insights can inform the design of self-tracking technologies for collaboration.

We present findings from a study that investigates how people engage in self-tracking as they experience a major life transition. Using pregnancy as a case study, we inquired 41 pregnant women into how their pregnancies shaped their use and engagement with self-tracking tools as they transitioned into their pregnancies. Our study highlights some of the challenges that transitions place on self-tracking, including misalignments between one's past data and current realities, and ways of realising goals. We discuss these challenges and suggest ways in which self-tracking could better account for realities which consider changing lives, bodies and identities.

Integrating User-Centred Design (UCD) methods into the first phases of software development projects has its challenges. A new process called the User-Centred Design Sprint process, UCD Sprint for short, has been suggested to support the project team during concept design. The tutorial introduces the UCD Sprint process, and participants practice two less-known methods that are part of the sprint: the User Group Analysis method and stating user experience goals. By the end of the tutorial, participants know why, when, and how to use the UCD Sprint process. This tutorial appeals to researchers and developers working in the concept design phase of designing software products, focusing on users that might be different from the developers.

Technological advancement provides an increasing number and variety of solutions to interact with digital content. However, the complexity of the devices we use to interact with such content grows according to the users’ needs as well as the complexity of the target interactions. This also includes all those tools designed to mediate touch interactions with virtual and/or remote environments, i.e., haptic interfaces and rendering techniques. We propose three hours of tutorials to discuss the technology, challenges, and perspective of haptic systems and rendering techniques for immersive human-computer interaction.

Global and systemic sustainability challenges increasingly require innovation teams to incorporate holistic, long-term thinking in their ideation practises. However, as any full-scale foresight process would be heavy to carry out, there is a need for a more rapid method. The goal of this tutorial is to teach participants how to approach technology innovation practice with a more holistic and sustainable mindset. For this, we will introduce and use the Future Ripples method, a light-weight, participatory activity to brainstorm future consequences of signals or trends. The method aligns with the first steps of a traditional foresight process and thus aims at developing futures thinking and anticipatory capacities.

How To Train Your Stakeholders: Skill Training In Participatory Health Research 如何培训利益相关者:参与式健康研究中的技能培训

Currently, health research increasingly involves diverse groups of stakeholders. Such collaborations occur on various levels, where in some cases, stakeholders become co-researchers. However, these stakeholders (e.g. patients) are not always trained in the necessary research skills. On the other hand, researchers are not trained to collaborate with stakeholders. While there is agreement that skill training should be offered as an integral part of participatory health, so far knowledge is lacking on what such a training should look like. This workshop aims to collect experiences from those who have either previously implemented stakeholder skill training or have experiences where stakeholder skill training was lacking but would have been beneficial, and facilitate the exchange of ideas between participants who are interested in the topic. The outcomes will be communicated in ways that are accessible for academic and non-academic stakeholders and will provide them with guidance for conducting stakeholder skill training.

Affective computing became a prominent research area for modeling empathic Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) to design interfaces that react or respond to their user’s emotions. However, several challenges remain in emotion recognition, adaptive interface intervention, real-world evaluations, or ethical implications before affective and empathic interfaces will be commonplace. In this workshop, we will discuss the current challenges of empathic and affective computing within the HCI community, including sensing, design of emotional adaptivity, and real-world evaluation. By bringing the community together, we envision ideating and creating new research directions in this field that will lead to a new generation of affective and empathic interfaces. This workshop aims to bring together researchers interested in these topics through open discussions, presentations, and an interactive prototyping session.

KIDKIT is an interactive system of four components equipped with actuators, sensors, and digital interfaces to feature a connected, dynamic, and expressive experience, and allow for low-threshold exploration of systemic connectivity. We designed the installation for young visitors at a local Maker Faire with the intention of gaining insights into children’s approach to and understanding of a novel, complex connected system in an informal, unguided learning setting. This demonstration presents the design of KIDKIT’s theme, components, supporting technologies, interaction behaviors, and concludes with a discussion and future possibilities.

The importance of designing for actual security, i.e., security in practice, is underlined by previous work. However, clear design principles for actual security are missing. This paper reports early work on establishing such design principles based on heuristic evaluations of security-enhancing applications. Seven experts evaluated the actual security of four applications for secure email communication. Based on a qualitative analysis of the experts’ findings, we formulate six design principles for actual security that apply to secure email, secure communication, and other security-enhancing applications.

Based on a qualitative analysis of the experts’ findings, we formulate six design principles for actual security that apply to secure email, secure communication, and other security-enhancing applications.","PeriodicalId":265029,"journal":{"name":"Adjunct Proceedings of the 2022 Nordic Human-Computer Interaction Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131042225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
