Established knowledge dissemination processes in the HCI community, such as academic publications and conferences, promulgate a systemic exclusion of indigenous research partners. While few individuals from indigenous or marginalised communities have published, entire communities collaborating in research projects have not had the opportunity to present their work and the knowledge created in the process. Thus we argue for more inclusive events such as the bi-annual eBorneo and the inaugural Namibian knowledge fair following principles of open space technology and community means of knowledge production and dissemination. We share our concept, experiences and reflection of such indigenous knowledge fairs, as a new approach to pluralistic knowledge dissemination in HCI.

Physical computing and interaction design are a combination that is active and prevalent in present-day design research and within Research through Design. However, there is a lack of tools for designing UX in physical computing. There is a need to better understand how the user experience ties together with the code used in a prototype. This paper aims to identify what properties a computer-aided tool for UX design in physical computing should have. We present the survey results based on a prototyping task, where students developed experiential blood-taking robots. Finally, we analysed the answers together with the literature to identify what central characteristics such a digital tool should have.

People with religious and/or spiritual interests have long been digitally connected and have engaged in joint prayer, worship, or meditation. However, the COVID pandemic has accelerated this trend as more religious and/or spiritual activities were technologically mediated. Many of these formats had to be implemented quickly, often with little participation from stakeholders. In this workshop, we aim to bring together scholars and practitioners from different backgrounds, such as religious studies, theology, HCI, and participatory design, to start a conversation about what collaborative technological design and research with religious and/or spiritual communities could look like in the future and what needs to be done to get to such futures. The outcomes of this workshop will be the formation of a transdisciplinary research and design community, the establishment of guiding principles and best practices that can inform research and design methodologies, and the dissemination of this knowledge in collaborative post-workshop publications.

ARC is an AR drawing tool for the HoloLens 2, and it has three different activation techniques for drawing. There is Pinch&Menu, which is the baseline technique, influenced by modal, commercial solutions. Then there is Gaze and Two-hand, both techniques that are a combination of modes and quasimodes. Each technique has been tested in a user study where the purpose was to explore what gave the participant the most seamless experience, in terms of being able to switch between interacting with the physical and digital world.

The digitalisation of the reproductive body has seen a myriad of cutting-edge technologies to prioritise neglected intimate health and care topics, such as fertility and contraception. The impact of these intimate data on livelihood and society is pervasive including that privacy is critical to safeguarding security as this increasing digitalisation also produces increasingly large datasets. In this paper, we enquire the collective nature of privacy in female-oriented technologies (FemTech) to show how this ever-extending collection of data implicates many beyond the individual. We introduce a pilot study on the data collection practices of a subset of FemTech devices with fertility tracking service. We demonstrate that data is collected about the user and others, such as their immediate relationships and user groups as a whole. We suggest that it is critical we ask who is vulnerable and discuss approaches to mitigate collective harm.

Regular eXplainable AI (XAI) approaches are often ineffective in supporting decision-makers across domains. In some instances, it can even lead to automation bias or algorithmic aversion or would simply be ignored as a redundant feature. Based on cognitive psychology literature we outline a strategy for how XAI interface design could be tailored to have a long-lasting educational value. We suggest the features that could support domain-related and technical skills development this way narrowing the digital divide between “new” and “old” experts. Lastly, we suggest an intermitted explainability approach that could help to find a balance between seamless and cognitively engaging explanations.

The Scrum Simulator (ScrumSim) is an interactive multiplayer VR simulation that places the participant in a virtual collaboration environment, in order to train them in the use of a project management methodology i.e., Scrum. In VR, the participants as a team, with the assistance of two avatars, perform intuitive tasks in sprints, cooperate, discuss, interact with the environment and receive feedback on their performance and tasks. The novelty of this approach lies not only in the unique design elements but also in the use of avatars and the utilisation of in-game data (task efficiency and communication).

The aural-visualiser 1000 is a prototype that reorients a user towards understanding the world from an auditory perspective instead of a primarily visual one. By attending to everyday audio instead of vision, the device asks the user to pay attention to the world in a more embodied way. Developed as a means of experimenting with the capacity of physical interaction design to support being present in the world differently, it records audio from everyday life and creates mementos for later reflection and interpretation. The mementos, paper receipts with abstract sound visualizations on them, offer a means of remembering experiences as they were to be there, instead of as they were recorded through image or video.

This work explores aesthetic, material, and experiential qualities of inflatable architecture. We created large-scale inflatable structures—from several stories high, to 15m long, to filling a plaza with an inflatables assemblage—in public space. Working from a first-person approach, we offer somaesthetic, material, and practical reflections and design considerations for architectural inflatables. Our findings detail how such large scale inflatables can alter sensory perception in compelling ways. Our discussion suggests future directions for sensory engagements with architectural inflatables.

Drone activities in our daily lives are on the rise, so is the need to advance research on how to design drones that can interact with human users in an autonomous and socially acceptable way. The focus of this workshop is to discuss this emerging technology in the context of health and well-being applications. In particular, we take an interdisciplinary approach to understand how to empower drones with more autonomous and AI-driven social features, hence leveraging possible methods, behaviors, and solutions for AI driven social drones in the context of health and well-being. The main activities of this workshop will entail hands on activities and discussions in collaborative format. The expected outcomes aim at building up synergies between participants to lead future steps in the domain of autonomous social drones in health care and well-being.
