Characteristics and application of 50 /spl mu/m cladding optical fibers 50 /spl μ m包层光纤的特性及应用

Optical fibers of 50 /spl mu/m cladding diameter are fabricated and characterized for optical and mechanical performance. We show that the geometrical limit based on minimum loss needs to be considered while designing miniature fibers suitable for integration into optical components.

We investigated a 16/spl times/40 Gb/s long-haul transmission to prove whether Raman fiber lasers can replace LDs used for codirectional second-order pumped Raman amplifiers (RA) and compared the RA to counter pumped RA and EDFAs.

A variable-gain optical amplifier for metro-WDM networks of mixed span losses is demonstrated. It consists of low-gain Raman-fiber-amplifier and gain-clamped SOA. 16/spl times/10 Gb/s signals were successfully transmitted over 170 km (87dB) of mixed span losses under dynamic add/drops.

An ultrafast all-optical NOR gate using intersubband and interband transitions in quantum wells is proposed. A proof-of-principle experiment is demonstrated using InGaAs/AlAsSb coupled quantum well structures operating at communication wavelengths (1.55 /spl mu/m and 1.3 /spl mu/m).

We have fabricated a 512-pixel liquid crystal VOA (variable optical attenuator) with biased PWM based on liquid crystal on silicon, using ITiO as a common electrode. The VOA is suitable for making tunable filters with low driver voltage.

We report on chirp-controlled optical modulation realized using a semiconductor optical amplifier and an electroabsorption modulator monolithically integrated with a widely-tunable laser. The chirp parameter can be adjusted from +1.0 to -0.7 across 30 nm tuning range.
