Packaging of opto-electronic components - as opposed to semiconductor or electronics ICs - requires not only hermeticity but also proper alignment of optical elements. Due to tolerances in the range of a few microns at best, conventional technology usually requires laborious active alignment steps to couple light efficiently into the fiber. A simple optical coupling and alignment scheme is presented which enables the fabrication of cost effective 10 Gbit/s TOSA (transmitter optical sub-assembly) modules which are based on edge-emitting laser diodes packaged hermetically in micro-machined silicon structures.

The EPON (Ethernet passive optical network) standard (IEEE 802.3ah) only covers physical and data link layers; the rest is considered out-of-scope. This article explores several interesting research problems brought forward by the EPON architecture, but left out by the standard.

This paper presents the honeycomb architecture for performing photonic regeneration and re-shaping in the counter-propagation. We demonstrate the suppression of undesired gain compression and cross-gain modulation effects along with significant improvement of input power sensitivity.

We demonstrate for the first time a 10-user, truly-asynchronous, gigabit OCDMA experiment over 50 km transmission using 511-chip SSFBG encoder/decoder and supercontinuum-based optical thresholder. Suppression of both beat noise and MAI are keys to the success.

We demonstrate an error-free 160 Gb/s SOA-based optical wavelength converter. Assisted by an optical bandpass filter, an effective recovery time of 3 ps is achieved in an SOA, which ensures 160 Gb/s operation.

PSK-homodyne detection using a polarization-multiplexed pilot-carrier in 2-bit/symbol transmission with an inverse-RZ signal at 20 Gb/s was demonstrated. The proposed scheme allows a high-extinction-ratio inverse-RZ signal by intensity-noise reduction (>15 dB) in a homodyne-balanced receiver.
