Artificial Intelligence (AI) will have transformational impact on businesses. However, the largest opportunities are still to be capitalized. Businesses that are aiming towards implementing AI into their business structure or providing AI services are facing a range of challenges to implement artificial intelligence into their enterprises. As businesses are changing and transforming their business models and processes to capitalize on the advantages of AI, the congestion/bottleneck is in business imagination, management and most importantly, the implementation of AI. This paper aims to identify the range of dimensions and elements for a readiness model framework to assist in the implementation of AI into a business' structures. The development the model framework rests on the completion of two systematic literature reviews. Through this process readiness elements could be mapped into readiness dimensions. This article presents the development of the initial readiness elements and their respective variables which can be categorized as 1) Employee and culture 2) Technology management 3) Organizational governance and leadership 4) Strategy 5) Infrastructure 6) Knowledge and information 7) Security. Through the identification of these readiness dimensions and related elements, an AI-readiness index can in future be developed.

Innovation is one of the key pillars of development for many companies, and especially for mature manufacturing companies operating in a B2B market. In addition to this, these companies involve more and more their users to develop their innovation capacity. Indeed, user-driven innovation (UDI) is popular in companies wishing to improve their sustainability in increasing their competitiveness on their market. However, it can be difficult for manufacturing companies to evaluate where they stand in terms of user-driven innovation, and more globally in terms of innovation. All degrees and types of innovation could be confused with them. The objective of this study is to bring valuable knowledge to manufacturing companies aiming to meet this challenge. In this paper, we propose a research approach based on criteria selected from the literature to assist manufacturing companies to evaluate their UDI score and analyze it over time. An evaluation tool based on this approach was developed and tested twice in an international manufacturing company before and after having set up UDI specific tools and actions. The results given by the tool show the positive evolution of the UDI score of the company.

Context: In recent years companies have faced challenges by high market dynamics, rapidly evolving technologies and shifting user expectations. Together with the adaption of lean and agile practices, it is increasingly difficult to predict upfront which products, features or services will satisfy the needs of the customers and the organization. Currently, many new products fail to produce a significant financial return. One reason is that companies are not doing enough product discovery activities. Product discovery aims at tackling the various risks before the implementation of a product starts. The academic literature only provides little guidance for conducting product discovery in practice. Objective: In order to gain a better understanding of product discovery activities in practice, this paper aims at identifying motivations, approaches, challenges, risks, and pitfalls of product discovery reported in the grey literature. Method: We performed a grey literature review (GLR) according to the guidelines to Garousi et al. Results: The study shows that the main motivation for conducting product discovery activities is to reduce the uncertainty to a level that makes it possible to start building a solution that provides value for the customers and the business. Several product discovery approaches are reported in the grey literature which include different phases such as alignment, problem exploration, ideation, and validation. Main challenges are, among others, the lack of clarity of the problem to be solved, the prescription of concrete solutions through management or experts, and the lack of cross-functional collaboration.

For doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbine connected to power grid the small-signal stability should be analyzed properly for facilitating the damping strategy design. In this paper, the small-signal stability of DFIG based wind energy model has been analyzed by using a linearized technique for calculating eigenvalues theoretically and also by programming technique using MATLAB to verify the results to analyze the stability of wind energy converter (WEC) model. Based on the federate small-signal model, eigenvalue analysis results are used for determining the relationship between state variables and different oscillation modes through the calculation of participation factors. With the analysis of this model, the evolve small-signal model can determine all the types of oscillating modes of DFIG connected to the grid, which are low and high-frequency oscillation, counting frequency and damping ratio of every oscillation mode. Different control parameters values of the small-signal model can impact frequency and the damping ratio of oscillation modes, which are the basis for an advanced study about damping strategy. Some control parameters values variation influence has been studied which shows how these factors impact on eigenvalues to affect oscillation mode.

Many enabling technologies of Industry 4.0 (Internet of Things “IoT”, Cloud systems, Big Data Analytics) contribute to the creation of what is the Digital Twin or virtual twin of a physical process, that is a mathematical model capable of describing the process, product or service in a precise way in order to carry out analyses and apply strategies. Digital Twin models integrate artificial intelligence, machine learning and analytics software with the data collected from the production plants to create digital simulation models that update when the parameters of the production processes or the working conditions change. This is a self-learning mechanism, which makes use of data collected from various sources (sensors that transmit operating conditions; experts, such as engineers with deep knowledge of the industrial domain; other similar machines or fleets of similar machines) and integrates also historical data relating to the past use of the machine. Starting from the virtual twin vision, simulation plays a key role within the Industry 4.0 transformation. Creating a virtual prototype has become necessary and strategic to raise the safety levels of the operators engaged in the maintenance phases, but above all the integration of the digital model with the IoT has become particularly effective, as the advent of software platforms offers the possibility of integrating real-time data with all the digital information that a company owns on a given process, ensuring the realization of the Digital Twin. In this context, this work aims at developing optimized solutions for application in a beverage pasteurization system using the Digital Twin approach, capable of creating a virtual modelling of the process and preventing high-risk events for operators.

Responsiveness is one of dimensions in the concept of responsible research and innovation (RRI). This dimension, among others, is manifested through responses to the challenges faced by society. Responsiveness from the scientific community is clearly evident recently in the response to the recent great challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic. The purpose of this paper is to provide an early review to assess publications in the first three months of the pandemic, since December 2019. Scientometrics and descriptive statistics were used to analyse documents indexed in the Scopus academic database. Open access tools from VOSviewer were used to help in visualising the network of countries and research topic density map. On average, 150.33 documents were published every month, with medicine as the main field of research (62.04%). Researchers from China, US, and UK institutions have published the most documents. Analysis of the keywords shows that the main topics of research regarded acute respiratory diseases, contact tracing, and molecular epidemiology. Although fields such as psychology, mathematics, computer science, engineering, nursing, business, management and accounting still have very few Covid-19 related studies at the moment, these fields likely to contribute in the future with regard to the great impact of this pandemic.

Digitalisation and automation of existing processes are key competitive factors for industry. Still, logistic operations often comprise manual effort, because the movement of goods and material places stringent requirements on the interactions between different systems, human-computer/robot-interaction as well as on changes in the operative processes. In general, the introduction and up-take of new enabling technologies, like the IoT, in complex systems evolved over decades, are challenging. The experience has shown that it is hard to assess all restrictions and interactions between new and old components before any new equipment or infrastructure is implemented and put in operation. This paper presents and discusses the usage of digital twins for supporting the decision-making processes in two different areas: Workstation design and logistics operation analysis. The results are based on tests and experiments carried out in a production logistics test-bed that includes physical devices, an IoT-infrastructure and simulation software. The digital twin is realised in a combination of using Unity and the simulation software IPS. The primary results show that there is no one-size fit all in terms of granularity of the underlying simulation model as well as for the reduction of reality in the digital twin, but the results also indicate that a context-aware digital twin supports the decision-making within a given scope.

The primary results show that there is no one-size fit all in terms of granularity of the underlying simulation model as well as for the reduction of reality in the digital twin, but the results also indicate that a context-aware digital twin supports the decision-making within a given scope.","PeriodicalId":269465,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation (ICE/ITMC)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116812423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article describes digital leadership–specifically character and competency–that differentiate digitally mature organizations from digitally developing organizations. We assess the differentiated actions of leaders of digitally mature organizations and discuss their results. The study is based on Patterns of Digitization survey with insights from 559 decision makers across five geographic regions–America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania designed to assess how companies are implementing digital transformation, the various strategies they employ, the investments they make, and the actions they take to achieve large-scale institutionalized digital transformations. The insights gleaned from the study should help lagging companies understand what is involved in implementing a digital transformation and what they need to do to catch up.

Falls are a leading cause of injury and death in older generations. An in-home fall monitoring system increases safety while allowing for continued independence. The WiFi-based In-home Fall-detection Utility monitors a user by harnessing WiFi Channel State Information, distinguishes falls from normal daily activities, and, if a fall occurs, automatically notifies the user's selected emergency contacts.

Delivering information timely across the logistics network is a challenge considering the diversity of entities, technologies, IT maturity and legislation. A way to overcome those challenges is to bring all the parties to a common level by providing technology able to fast and easily connect every system and a common language to allow efficient communication between logistics stakeholders. When we apply the Synchromodality and the Digital twin concepts to logistics, significant improvements can be achieved. Shippers and Integrators can act more precisely, deciding in any step of the global operation by what mode should be selected or combined and following the strict regulations and issuing the mandatory documents timely to avoid bottlenecks. This work produced one real business scenario where the 4-corner model technology-based solution enables synchromodality across the logistics network of one industry unit and its providers and the Digital twin for the process and the VGM (Verified Gross Mass) formality documents. As a solution to this scenario we propose collaboration networks between logistics stakeholders that provide interoperable, low-cost, reliable and secure data exchange, without requiring significant IT developments. To this purpose we studied and developed a demonstrator and tested our solution that consists of the adoption of the 4-corner model as described by Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) eDelivery using access points and the adoption of the standard e-Freight to exchange data over the collaboration network. The widespread use of this solution will increase global efficiency, make the inclusion of every client and provider regardless of resources available, and avoid imponderables in the logistics network.
