Machine Learning and the tasks of recognition and detection have become a salient topic in recent years. [1] This study is focused on improving the task of using deep convolutional neural networks for facial emotion recognition in the wild with a two-part hierarchical architecture made up of two deep neural networks that are focused on two different tasks. The first task uses a convolutional neural network to classify face or not face. The second task ascertains using another neural network if a face is displaying the emotion within a selected suite of emotions, depicting joyful and sad faces. Factoring the recognition task in this way has produced an observed improvement on previous published work with an overall accuracy of 90% compared to platforms on a CPU cluster and also using TPUs to increase computational power.

Governance has a significant impact on the success of programs and projects. However, governance of collaborative university-industry projects and programs in literature, is a rather scarce topic. Based on an ethnographic study of a large university-industry collaboration, this paper proposes a conceptual framework of Organizational Enablers (OEs) to improve the governance of collaborative university-industry R&D programs. An exploratory research was carried out, aiming to learn from the experience of program and project managers and other program stakeholders of the case under study. Qualitative data was collected using participant observation and document analysis. The framework highlights nine OEs: ‘Established governance policies and values’, ‘Formal Governance support structures’, ‘Flexible organization structures’, ‘Standardization of program and project management practices’, ‘Different management approaches to fit the project needs’, ‘Clearly defined roles and responsibilities’, ‘Different means of communication and interaction’, ‘Top management Support’ and ‘Projects strategic alignment within the industry and university roadmaps’.

Industrial automation supported by the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) paradigm has become a driving force in production systems. According to current product lifecycles and mass customization, I4.0 technologies, architectures and services offer a new perspective on automated and flexible production systems. Within this context, smart sustainability represents a new way for making goods and managing processes with a lower environmental impact. Experts already assessed the relation between I4.0 and Circular Economy (CE), but practical demonstrations are lacking. The aim of this paper is presenting a laboratory application case showing the integration of I4.0 and CE, specifically at product End-of-Life stage.

The objective of this research work is to identify standard profiles that reflect the innovative behavior of SMEs in relation to the maturity of their internal practices. A method of Hierarchical Ascending Classification (HAC) was applied to a panel of 319 SMEs by combining an evaluation of 6 innovation practices from the Potential Innovation Index (PII) framework with contextual variables related to the structure, the environment and the market of the companies. The results showed that 6 profiles could be identified and that they reflect specific innovative behaviors. While some of these profiles seem to be slightly connected to particular business sectors or geographical areas, factors related to the structure of the firm itself (size in particular) do not seem to be differentiating.

Photovoltaic solar energy cell manufacturers not only perform research and development (R&D) but also try to captivate the technological output of the competitor companies. It is essential to understand the roles and positions of companies in a particular competitive network. This study, therefore, first combines various centrality measures such as in-degree, out-degree, and eigenvector for the patent citation network between two variables. Companies are grouped into four clusters by using one-way MANOVA and k-means clustering to test the significance of clusters. The main aim of the study is to identify the role of the four positions thus formed, which are termed as a non-practicing entity, leader, follower, and significantly emerging. Organizations need to understand their roles and positions in the technology domain and act strategically to enhance their technology flow and market position.

The research aims to assess whether the Living-Lab methodology can facilitate the introduction of new technologies within a Public Administration (PA). Previous research explored the challenges and benefits derived from the introduction of ICT into public organizations through the presentation of qualitative case studies. None of these works evaluates if, and eventually how, the introduction of new technologies in Public Administrations (PAs) can be facilitated by the Living Lab (LL). This paper attempts to close this gap by presenting the results of B@ARCA - BIM at ARCA, a research project where the development of Building Information Modelling (BIM) based methodologies and technologies and their introduction into a Public Organization has been carried out embracing the Living Lab methodology. In detail, the project objective is to equip the ARCA agency, the authority in charge of the management of the social housing asset in the Puglia Region, with innovative technological solutions useful to improve the maintenance work of the old and great heritage. The level of acceptance of the new technology, measured through quantitative questionnaires, resulted in increased after the completion of the Living Lab development activities. These initial results may encourage public administrations to use the Living Lab to expose their employees to not just BIM but also the series of new technologies needed for the digitization of the public administration.

Uncertainty about the future requires companies to create discontinuous innovations. Established companies, however, struggle to do so; whereas independent startups seem to better cope with this. Consequently, established companies set up entrepreneurial initiatives to make use of startups' benefits. Consequently, this led–amongst others–to great interest in socalled corporate entrepreneurship (CE) programs and to the development and characterization of several different forms. Their processes to achieve certain objectives, yet, are still rather ineffective. Thus, considerations of the actions performed in preparation for and during CE programs could be one approach to improve this but are still absent today. Furthermore, the increasing use of several CE programs in parallel seems to bear the potential for synergies and, thus, more efficient use of resources. Aiming to provide insights to both issues, this study analyzes actions of CE programs, by looking at interviews with managers of seven corporate incubators and accelerator programs of five established German tech-companies.

As digitalization is becoming more and more an integral part of business in all sectors, the digital twin paradigm starts to play a more crucial role. This paper primarily aims at describing a generic framework for digital twin development in chemical process industry from an operational perspective. The main building blocks of the operational digital twin are presented, namely data management, process modeling, process optimization, production scheduling, and process control, as well as the deployment. Strong emphasis is put on the advanced process control hierarchy. Additionally, the role of artificial intelligence in the development and deployment of operational digital twin in process industry is presented, particularly regarding surrogate modeling, predictive modeling and AI supported optimization and control. Consequently the potential for new business models induced by digitalization is discussed, and an outlook for prospective research topics is provided.

The meaning and positive impact of agility in software development are generally recognized. However, the benefits of agility as a business strategy in which enterprises design their organization, processes, products, and services in such a way that they can thrive in a continuously changing and unpredictable business environment, have not yet been fully proven. Therefore, a research project was carried out seeking to investigate the actions taken, challenges and benefits of organizations investing efforts to transform into agile enterprises. The aim of this paper is to share: 1) the key foundations and expected benefits of becoming an agile enterprise through a literature review, 2) a summary of the insights and state of the art of the agile enterprise implementation obtained from a global online survey applied to different industries, and 3) the outcomes from a one-day hackathon where teams, comprised of practitioners and students, were challenged to provide prototypes of conceptual solutions to become an agile enterprise.

However, the benefits of agility as a business strategy in which enterprises design their organization, processes, products, and services in such a way that they can thrive in a continuously changing and unpredictable business environment, have not yet been fully proven. Therefore, a research project was carried out seeking to investigate the actions taken, challenges and benefits of organizations investing efforts to transform into agile enterprises. The aim of this paper is to share: 1) the key foundations and expected benefits of becoming an agile enterprise through a literature review, 2) a summary of the insights and state of the art of the agile enterprise implementation obtained from a global online survey applied to different industries, and 3) the outcomes from a one-day hackathon where teams, comprised of practitioners and students, were challenged to provide prototypes of conceptual solutions to become an agile enterprise.","PeriodicalId":269465,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation (ICE/ITMC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114369812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Digital Transformation (DT) causes a technology-driven change in organizations and society. But a precise state, an organization should strive for by this change, is not discussed adequately. Anyway, organizations implement a Chief Digital Officer (CDO) as a strategic management role, to control the journey of DT. This new role should be supported by assessment and control guidance. In this contribution we aim to understand and conceptualize the target state of DT. Based on a discussion of literature and expert interviews, we found out, practitioners themselves are not aware of the target state, although they must decide what is to reach on the DT journey. As a starting point for the development of guidance for the CDO, we secondly propose a model of digital fitness that conceptualizes the target state of DT comprising of three determinants: Digital Adoption, Digital Expertise and the Adoption Rate of Digital Innovations.
