Parents of MMC patients have strong attitudes and beliefs on specific issues. They believed in the need to be involved in decisions regarding their children and felt strongly that their role was central and was important as that of the physician. They believed also in the importance of providing both medical and nutritional care to handicapped infants with a minimum of government intrusion.

: A male infant displayed a congenital malformation of the genitourinary system manifested by rectoscrotal translocation of the penis with hypospadias and a bipartial urinary bladder with a suprapubical fistula and right kidney agenesis. In a first operation performed when he was 6 years of age, the urinary fistula was excised, and a broad anastomosis between the two parts of the urinary bladder was performed. In a second operation two years later, the longitudinal axis of the penis was transposed in frontal direction.
