The major mechanical equipment installed in the nation’s largest pumping plant is briefly described. There is a description of the plant layout design and assembly of the pumps, the discharge valve system, the method of thrust containment in the pump itself as well as in the piping, how the discharge line is filled, and how the discharge line is drained for inspection and maintenance. Also, there is an analysis of the method of pump procurement and how the guaranteed pump efficiency was established. The method of starting the pump and some of the operating difficulties are described.

Difficulties in driving offshore piles to design penetration are not infrequent and result in costly delays. Some of the more frequent problems are illustrated by six case histories of long piles driven to penetrations from 200 ft to 300 ft in various offshore regions. Drivability of the installed piles for each of these cases was investigated in retrospect by the one-dimensional wave equation, a technique that can also be applied as an important step in preconstruction planning. The need for supplemental procedures to aid pile driving because of unfavorable installation conditions can frequently be anticipated from combined evaluation of wave equation results and practical pile driving experience. Supplemental pile installation procedures such as jetting and predrilling should be performed under close engineering supervision to assure that the completed pile installation is consistent with design requirements.

The open well method of manually digging foundations down to bedrock and filling the resulting shaft with concrete or stone was developed in Chicago in the 1890s. Mechanical driling was also used at this time, a large steam-powered auger being used in Kansis City; but it was not rapidly adopted due to the cheapness of the open well process. In the 1920s, well-drilling techniques were adopted, enabling foundation piers to be drilled into soft ground to greater depths than were previously possible. Subsequently engine-driven augers were used and in 1926 a hydraulic rotary drilling method was patented by Powell and a dry method by Hunt and Ropp. These two processes were widely implemented. Mobile augers, both truck mounted and crane mounted were also developed and used. Recent developments to advance pier drilling techniques include the Benoto Deep Caisson Excavator (1957) and the use of bentonite when drilling in water-bearing soils.
