FIFTY-YEAR DEVELOPMENT: CONSTRUCTION OF STEEL HYBRID BRIDGES
Pub Date : 1975-12-01 DOI: 10.1061/JCCEAZ.0000557
R. Trepal
Hybrid construction of bridges has developed over the past 50 yr, beginning with composite concrete deck bridges during the twenties, progressing through prestressed and autostressed hybrid girders, and now including orthotropic girder bridges. The progress of the composite girder is traced primarily through the evolution of the shear connector. The hybrid girder originated with prestressed girders and developed into the autostressed hybrid girder. The modern hybrid girder is little different from a normal girder; however, its presence represents a true advancement in furthering the economy of steel bridge construction. The orthotropic girder bridge was brought about by the industry's need to develop bridges with maximum economy of material. This type of structure is perhaps the most recent totally new idea in bridge construction. The roadway quality is of great importance to this bridge and the wear surface has advanced considerably. /ASCE/

Fifty-Year Development — Construction of Steel Pipeline Suspension Bridges
Pub Date : 1975-12-01 DOI: 10.1061/JCCEAZ.0000558
J. Cain
Pipeline suspension bridge construction has evolved from short or multispan structures to long single-span structures with the development of new techniques in design, fabrication, and erection. These developments are examined by reviewing the construction of representative bridges which have been built in the United States and of one unique Canadian bridge.

FIFTY YEARS OF CONSTRUCTION COST-REDUCING ANALYSES
Pub Date : 1975-06-01 DOI: 10.1061/JCCEAZ.0000500
R. L. Peurifoy
The purpose of this paper is to present and consider some, but not necessarily all, of the methods that have been developed during the past 50 yr, to enable engineers, architects, contractors, and other persons associated with the construction industry to preplan, plan, and analyze construction operations in order to reduce the costs of construction operations and to provide other beneficial services. The time alloted to this paper will preclude a lengthy consideration of each method. The Appendix gives sources of additional information that describe the methods more fully.

Weather Effects on Mason Productivity
Pub Date : 1974-09-01 DOI: 10.1061/JCCEAZ.0000438
C. T. Grimm, N. K. Wagner
Mason productivity is determined by architectural design, contractor efficiency, mason skill, and weather. Thermal stress in humans is affected by the balance between metabolism and evaporation, convection, and radiation. These heat transfers are affected by environmental conditions of temperature, humidity, air movement, and radiation. Correlations between all thermal stress variables and labor productivity have not been established for construction craftsmen. However, relationships between mason productivity and temperature and humidity have been established. Meteorological data from 73 United States weather stations have been used to determine geographical variations in mason productivity as affected by these climatic variables.
