The desire for predictable prosthetic outcomes led to the development of guided implant surgery where the ideal placement of the implant is achieved using radiographic and surgical stent in conjunction with radiographic aids. These surgical guides improved the precision of implant placement without incurring possible intra- and post-operative complications. Therefore, this review highlights various techniques for the fabrication of surgical guides, their advantages, and their drawbacks.

Cyst is defined as a pathological cavity which may or may not be lined by an epithelium and is usually filled with solid, semisolid or gaseous material. Dentigerous cyst is of odontogenic origin and is usually associated with an impacted tooth. Dentigerous cyst in maxillary antrum is often misdiagnosed in peripheral health care centers due to initial complaints mimicking maxillary sinusitis with patients reporting to general physicians/otolaryngologist for treatment. This article intends to report a case of infected dentigerous cyst initially managed as recurrent maxillary sinusitis in a peripheral rural health care center in high altitude region with limited health care facilities.

Sialoliths are commonly encountered soft tissue calcification of salivary glands. Most commonly occurring in adult population, they may be asymptomatic and diagnosed on routine dental examinations or present with symptoms of pain and swelling of the involved gland. Thus, thorough examination and investigation is mandatory to reach the correct diagnosis of sialolithiasis. This paper presents an interesting case of unusually large submandibular sialolith indicated for surgical removal that, surprisingly, exfoliated by itself eliminating the need for surgery along with a literature review.

Odontogenic and nonodontogenic cystic lesions of the mandible have wide range of pathologic features but similar imaging findings. Their locations in the mandible and prevalence rate often help narrow the differential diagnosis. Histological findings are crucial and direct the workup and treatment of a lesion. This case report presents calcifying odontogenic cyst mimicking dentigerous cyst involving left angle of mandible in a 38 year old male.

To perform any surgical procedure, we require administration of safe as well as effective local anesthesia. The prime and the most important step in any clinical oral surgical procedure is the administration of local anesthesia. Almost in most of the clinical steps in dentistry, local anesthesia is used, therefore there are chances of complications that might occur with the administration of the local anesthetic drug. It is advised to take the proper history of the patient, i.e., is there any systemic complication that might get enhanced with the administration of the local anesthetic agent. Ask and verify, whether the patient is allergic to any specific medicine or allergic to the local anesthetic agent, to avoid any sort of complication.

In a daily routine practice dental implants has been widely used and dental implants are considered as a one of the good treatment option in replacing the single tooth in the oral cavity or replacing the multiple teeth in the oral cavity. With the use of dental implants, a dentist can replace the single tooth or multiple teeth or with the help of dental implants one can provide the whole full arch implant supported prosthesis. The survival rate of the implants are dependent on so many conditions , like patient systemic condition, bone quality and amount of bone available, sterilization protocol during the placement of the implant. In some cases failing of implant were also seen due to systemic condition, due to mechanical failure such as loosening of the implant, loosening of the screw. So a dentist should have a basic knowledge of the implant along with its all components, causes of implant failures and how to avoid the causes of implant failure as well as how to manage.

Higher rates of local recurrences and second primaries, ascribable to field cancerization, are known problems in oral cancers. The present review explored utility of identification of potential recurrences by Raman spectroscopy, which has been shown to identify oral precancers, cancers, and field cancerization in humans and micro-sized mechanical irritation-induced tumours in animals. There is an urgent need for improved techniques for disease detection. The focus here, in vivo Raman spectroscopy (RS), measures inelastic light scattering with the vibrational and rotational modes of molecular bonds in cells/tissue. The Raman ‘signature’ can be used to assess physiological and/or altered pathological statuses. This information can supplement existing diagnostic techniques for screening and diagnosis, in interventional guidance for identifying disease margins, and in monitoring treatment responses. Using fiberoptic-based light delivery and collection, RS is performed on accessible tissue surfaces, either on the skin, in hollow organs or intraoperatively. The strength of RS lies in the high biochemical information content of the spectra, that show an array of narrow peaks associated with specific chemical bonds. This results in high sensitivity and specificity, e.g., to distinguish malignant/premalignant from normal tissues. An issue with Raman signal is that it is often weak, limiting clinical use to point-by-point measurements. Recent advances in instrumentation and spectral analysis have improved the feasibility of RS, so that it is now being investigated with increased success in cancer types, locations and for non-oncological conditions. This review covers recent advances and continuing challenges, with emphasis on clinical translation.

Masseter muscle hypertrophy can be defined as a rare, asymptomatic, atypical amplification of the masseter muscle, moreover in a unilateral or bilateral pattern which is manifested in the form of an intensified muscle mass. The treatment of the hypertrophy may or may not be of importance and just removal/correction of the etiological trigger factor responsible for it. Appropriate diagnosis and management of the disease process should be the part of the teaching curriculum and should be taught as the basic part of the diagnosis. Herein, we are reporting a case report of a patient who was diagnosed with masseter muscle hypertrophy.

Tongue tie otherwise called as Ankyloglossia is a developmental anomaly commonly characterized by a very short lingual frenulum that literally restricts the movements of tongue from the floor of mouth. An uncommon thick band extending beneath the ventral surface of tongue to floor of the mouth. This represents a uncommon length of the lingual frenulum. This causes problems in daily life of the person who was affected with the following difficulties of speech, deglutition, poor oral hygiene etc. This article reports a 19 year college going guy came to the department with the complaint of difficulty in speech and poor oral hygiene. The case was successfully treated with a soft tissue diode laser and followed up.

Fortunately medical emergencies rarely occurs in daily dental practice. The risk of any serious complications can be reduced by ensuring that the basic life supporting drugs are in the appropriate place and the whole dental team should be well trained in basic life support measures. It is important for a dental practioner to have a thorough knowledge in recognizing and carrying out its initial management.
