Validation and Verification (V&V) is one of the most important aspects of the simulation modeling process. During the three stages of V&V (conceptual validation, verification, and operational validation), it is possible to identify inconsistencies in the model’s development and, therefore, increase the trust that the model is an adequate representation of reality. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate practical problems and benefits while applying V&V techniques, even if takes a lot of project time, as an indispensable step in guiding the modeler to solving any missed issue. Shortcomings and benefits of V&V techniques application were demonstrated through a case study at a Children’s hospital Call Center.

Approaches for simulation model simplification 仿真模型简化方法

Simplification is considered a fundamental part of modelling and simulation. Model simplification is instrumental in creating models that are useful - by focusing on system elements that matter, and feasible - by reducing study efforts. Despite its widely acknowledged relevance simulation model simplification may still be considered an underdeveloped field. This is mirrored in existing literature, and course books. While the former shows a fragmented landscape in addressing the issue, the latter often offer little guidance for the (future) analyst. To foster further development of the field we assess current progress by providing a literature review. Issues addressed by the review concern: (i) definition and scope of model simplification, (ii) reasons for model simplification, (iii) drivers of inappropriate model complexity, and (iv) approaches for model simplification. The review is meant to provide a useful overview of the work undertaken in this field, aiming to benefit educators, practitioners and researchers.

The Higgs Boson: the search for the particle and the role of simulation 希格斯玻色子:寻找粒子和模拟的作用

Answers to pressing questions in high-energy physics may lie in electroweak symmetry breaking, the phenomenon for explaining why the weak and electromagnetic forces are different. From solving the mystery of dark energy to string theory, our entire philosophy depends on the unknown physics at the electroweak scale. The hunt for the elusive Higgs boson has gone on for almost half a century. Its discovery was finally announced on July 4, 2012. The discovery of the Higgs boson is even more significant than often discussed. This grand experimental achievement in the largest, most powerful machine ever built, the Large Hadron Collider, marks a far wider scientific, philosophical and intellectual triumph -- and one that spans human history from the dawn of civilization. It has to do with the idea of symmetry: amazingly, the Higgs boson was predicted to exist not for any physical reasons, but on strictly mathematical grounds based on arcane symmetries usually studied in "pure" mathematics. And the search for these symmetries involves a major quest that began with the Babylonians and Egyptians and continued to the ancient Greeks, the Arabs, medieval Europe, and on through the 19th century to our own time. This talk will begin with a brief overview of particle physics and why the Higgs Boson is so important and how it completes the symmetry. It will then explain how one goes about searching for this particle and expand the critical role simulation efforts played not only in the final analysis but also in designing the detector systems, which truly are modern marvels. I will discuss with some other highlights from these experiments and what to expect as the LHC gears up to come back on line in early 2015 at its design energy, nearly double its current 8 GeV operating point. Finally, I will close with a few words on particle physics and society and how the search for the perhaps esoteric has benefited society.

Modeling and simulation applied to capacity planning of voice gateways: a case study 应用于语音网关容量规划的建模与仿真:案例研究

In this work, we applied modeling and simulation to plan and evaluate the capacity of a real enterprise voice gateway system. We modeled the analyzed voice gateway and assessed it under different workload scenarios. We evaluated the actual setup under the real current workload demand, as well as future expected demands in terms of voice long-distance calls using PSTN and VoIP providers. Also, the existing voice gateway capacity was tested facing calls to mobile phones through GSM Sim cards. Finally, we tested a proposal setup to reduce the number of simultaneous E1 channels used per voice call, and found that our approach reduced the E1 usage rate by 14%.

This talk will begin with an overview of the life of John Swanson, showing that his success was due to a community effort, and celebrating the people and institutions which made his engineering contributions possible. A milestone in this path is the awarding of the John Fritz Medal, said to be the highest award in the engineering profession. The rest of this talk will be a non-technical history of ANSYS, the worlds premier engineering simulation software. Discussion will include the technical, engineering, and business factors and decisions which put ANSYS on the path to global success. Questions will be welcome at the end of the talk, and at the conference after the luncheon address.

Discrete event simulation for integrated design in the production and commissioning of manufacturing systems 制造系统生产与调试中集成设计的离散事件仿真

This paper presents a hybrid environment for testing and training in control systems in manufacturing. The hybrid environment uses a Discrete Event Simulation (DES) model integrated to didactic stations of manufacturing processes used in the training of students. The control logic of the automated system can operate in real-time and integrate to the process, both in the simulation model as in the manufacturing real system. During the testing, it was clear for the control system, and also for the student, the part of the process represented by the simulation model and the real part of the system. The proposed hybrid approach allowed, somehow, expanding the use of the systems simulated in the training of students in control logic. Several simulation models could be developed and engaged to manufacturing stations, in order to provide to the student more alternatives of tests at the training environment.

Computer simulation is a true success story of modern analysis, so it is hard to be anything but positive about it. But the Simulation Curmudgeon∗ thinks maybe we should question some of the standard practices of simulation. In particular, he complains “Why do we teach people to build simulation models as if they will never change? Why do we treat simulation like poor man's queueing theory? Why do we fit input distributions like it's 1922? And why, in 2013, can't we talk to our simulations?” In this presentation the Simulation Curmudgeon will expound (in a lighthearted way) on these complaints, plead guilty to most of them, and offer some thoughts about what we might be doing instead.

Although originally developed as solutions to modern military challenges — such as long-range strike, persistent surveillance, supply chain turbulence and employment of unmanned systems — our networked systems are unintentionally creating a new set of challenges: extreme complexity in command and control functions. This presentation will describe the sources and characteristics of his unintended complexity and show how solutions like adaptive command, collective control and distributed cognition can provide the kind of operational simplicity that helps humans cope in such a complex world. Drawing examples from recent DoD concepts and programs, this talk will also discuss the promise of modeling and simulation to deliver us from all this self-inflicted complexity.

Big Data may be an ugly word describing a diverse reality, but it also points to a bright future for simulation in general, and Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) in particular. As companies are struggling to make sense of the staggering amounts of data they have been amassing, data-driven simulation will be the backbone of how value is discovered and captured from data. Drawing from successful applications of ABM, I will make it explicit that what used to be an afterthought of simulation modeling (calibration) is now the cornerstone of the Big Data edifice.
