We propose backoff-channel contention resolution (BCCR) as a means of improving throughput in optical switched networks. Using BCCR, blocking can be reduced by orders of magnitude with little or no modification to existing hardware.

A simple method based on arbitrary optical waveform generation is presented for generating sub- picosecond pulses. The method uses standard optical components and demonstrates a novel and flexible way to generate narrow pulses.

We review our recent experiments demonstrating slow light in fibre Bragg gratings. In these experiments we observe gap solitons emerging from the gratings without broadening and with a tunable delay up to 4.7 pulse widths.

An in-line fiber etalon, formed by a self-enclosed Fabry-Perot (F-P) cavity inside an optical fiber fabricated by using 157 nm laser micromachining, is first demonstrated. This etalon has almost perfect characteristics, such as excellent interferometric fringe visibility of up to ~30 dB, low thermal cross-sensitivity, great potential to realize mass-production with good reproducibility, low-cost, and super capability to operate in harsh environments, etc. It could be used as a precise wavelength reference or a practical strain sensor without any thermal compensation.

Without assuming the channel memory length is known a priori to the receiver, we propose a clustering-based channel estimation algorithm for optical fiber communication systems, which can also induce a complexity-reduced MLSE receiver.
我们提出了一种基于聚类的光纤通信系统信道估计算法,该算法可以降低MLSE接收机的复杂度。
