ABSTRACT In pediatric dentistry, restorative treatment requires a material with good mechanical properties, ease of handling, and usability. For the restoration of deciduous teeth, colored compomers are an alternative material for motivating children in dental treatment and, consequently, behavior management. This study aimed to provide information about colored compomers by presenting a case of restoration in a deciduous molar with a five-year follow-up. Additionally, the study highlights the child’s motivation toward dental treatment and oral care, thus offering an alternative to other restorative materials for clinicians to consider. The treatment plan for tooth 75 was selective removal of decayed tissue and restoration with compomer blue- colored Twinkly Star. The restoration was performed without anesthesia under relative isolation following the clinical protocol recommended by the manufacturer. As a result, it was observed that the restoration in colored Twinky Star compomer remained aesthetically and functionally satisfactory after five years. In addition, it was favorable for the child’s collaboration in dental treatment. It is concluded that colored Twinky Star compomer can be a viable alternative for restoring deciduous teeth, contributing to children’s dental treatment and oral care motivation.

ABSTRACT Dilated odontoma is a rare dental developmental anomaly that belongs to a class od dens in dente, being rarely described in the posterior region of the mandible. To be describe a dilated odontoma in the lower third molar region. this study had a qualitative, transversal, descriptive and documentar approach, of the case report type. Developed in the Integrated Health Clinics of a University in the Extreme South of Santa Catarina, in the Dentistry Service. This article presets a case of dilated odontoma in a 32-year-old male patient. The patient had pain and swelling in the left posterior region of the mandible. The Crown of this element was clinically within the normal range, however the radiographic examination showed barrel-shaped root alteration in element 38 and expansion of the buccal and lingual cortical bone. An incisional biopsy of the anomaly whas performed and sent to anatomopathological examination. According to the clinical, radiographic and anatomopathological characteristics, the diagnosis of dilated odontoma was reached. Due to the aberrant root anatomy, complete removal was chosen. The diagnosis of this abnormality depeds on the clinical, radiographic and anatomoathological characteristics and its therapy varies according to the invagination. In cases of deep invagination, extraction is indicated.

ABSTRACT Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been indicated for apexification because it has desirable properties such as excellent biocompatibility, low solubility and dimensional stability. This procedure consists of inducing root apex formation in teeth with incomplete root formation. This article reports a case of trauma in a young dental element, with necrotic pulp and incomplete root formation. For its treatment, apexification with white MTA was performed, which showed excellent results in inducing the continuity of root formation with mineralized tissue in the apical portion. Therefore, MTA is a viable option for apexification, bringing as its main advantage, faster treatment and immediate coronary rehabilitation of the dental element.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the quality of life of nursing undergraduate students and factors associated with socioeconomic variables and internship field. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in an educational institution located in the northern region of the state of Ceará, Brazil, involving 309 nursing undergraduates from the 1st to the 10th semester. The WHOQOL-bref instrument was used to evaluate the quality of life. Each domain and total score of the instrument were considered as outcome variables. Results: 69.3% of the individuals were women, the mean age of the sample was 28 years, and 67.7% defined their quality of life as “good” or “very good.” Undergraduates who consumed well water and those with lower income had a higher chance of presenting lower scores in the physical domain and environmental domain of quality of life, respectively (p < 0.05), and of having a lower total quality of life score. Conclusion: The students considered their quality of life to be good/very good, and sociodemographic factors influenced the lower quality of life score.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim was evaluate the validity and reproducibility of the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) in detecting occlusal caries among graduate students after training using the e-learning program. Methods: A sample of forty-two primary teeth with different ranges of occlusal caries was selected. All teeth were mounted on a wax support and standardized photographs (EOS Rebel XTI, Canon, NY, USA) of the occlusal surfaces were taken. An experienced researcher randomly selected one specific site on the occlusal surface of each tooth to be examined later. Fifteen graduate students with no previous experience in the ICDAS scores completed the ICDAS e-learning program in Portuguese. After the training, visual examination of the occlusal surfaces was taken twice, independently, with a two-week interval. After visual examination, the teeth were longitudinally sectioned 1mm away from the previously selected occlusal site. The teeth were fixed on a wax support and photographed. Histological analysis was performed from these photographs by an experienced researcher to evaluate the depth of demineralization. Results: The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) inter-examiner values among all participants varied from 0.54 to 0.96 and intra-examiner ICC reproducibility of the examiners ranges from 0.61 to 0.85, showing good to excellent reproducibility. For detection of enamel and dentine lesions (D1), ICDAS obtained sensitivity 0.835 and specificity 0.756. For dentine lesions (D3), the method revealed an increase in sensitivity but specificity was similar to D1. Conclusion: ICDAS e-learning training program was efficient for the training of caries lesions detection among graduate students.

ABSTRACT The loss in height of the alveolar bone crest after tooth extraction makes rehabilitation of the posterior maxilla challenging due to low bone density and atrophy, in addition to pneumatization of the maxillary sinus. Maxillary sinus lift surgery prior to implant placement makes implant-supported rehabilitation feasible. This study aimed to describe a case report of maxillary sinus surgery using the side window technique prior to rehabilitation with a prosthesis supported by dental implants, highlighting the importance of planning to minimize intraoperative complications. This is a clinical case report of a 59-year-old male patient who was assisted at a private higher education institution complaining of edentulous spaces and the desire for rehabilitation with implants. He underwent rehabilitation planning, including the surgical treatment of maxillary sinus lifting using the side window technique. Bone gain was confirmed using cone beam computed tomography six months after the surgical approach to the maxillary sinus. The planning of rehabilitation of the posterior maxilla and careful sinus lift surgery using the side window technique is a predictable therapeutic option for clinical cases with bone gain in height of the posterior region of the maxilla prior to the installation of dental implants. The clinical case presented demonstrated success in the gain of bone volume in the posterior region of the maxilla, without postoperative complications, and the patient was still satisfied with the proposed treatment, awaiting complete implant-supported rehabilitation.

ABSTRACT The commercial bovine bone mineral most commonly used is available in two particle sizes and studies have demonstrated contradictory results regarding bone formation volume using small or large particles. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the bone formation volume and residual bovine bone volume in sinus floor augmentation using small and large particles. The following outcome measures were assessed: bone formation volume (%) and residual bovine bone particles volume (%) assessed by histomorphometric analysis. The initial screening resulted in 236 records. After removal of duplicated articles and analysis of titles, abstracts and full texts, three articles were included in the meta-analysis. The bone formation volume and residual bovine bone volume did not differ between small and large particles, with low heterogeneity of studies. The particle size of bovine bone mineral did not influence bone formation percentage; small and large particles of bovine bone graft presented similar residual bone mineral; more randomized clinical trials should be performed to completely confirm that bovine bone mineral particle size does not affect the result of sinus floor augmentation.

ABSTRACT Studies have found the association between episodes of bruxism and the presence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The aim of the present study was to report the diagnosis and palliative therapy of bruxism associated with TMD. Patient, 23 years old, male gender, presented at dental clinic, complaining of pain in the temporomandibular joint on the left side and alteration of the form of the anterior teeth. During the anamnesis it was documented that this symptom was recurrent and reported the habit of grinding teeth. The clinical examination observed discrepancy between the centric relation and the maximum habitual intercuspation, unsatisfactory protrusive guide, presence of wear facets, clicking and mandibular deviation during mouth opening. The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC / TMD) questionnaire was applied to diagnose TMD. By means of specific algorithms this disorder was classified as myofascial pain, disc displacement with reduction and osteoarthritis, all affecting the left side. Thus, it was proposed the assembly of the models in semi-adjustable articulator for occlusal mapping and waxing diagnosis, then the occlusal adjustment by selective wear and material addition was executed. After this procedure, the occlusal splint was installed as a palliative therapy for bruxism. This case report suggests that the dental approach by means of occlusal adjustment and occlusal splint, in a patient diagnosed with bruxism and temporomandibular disorder, reduces the signs and symptoms that affect the components of the Stomatognathic System.

ABSTRACT Wound healing consists of the coordinated cascade of molecular, cellular and biochemical events that interact for tissue recomposition to occur. The interruption or failure in this process can trigger the delay in closing the lesion and chronic wounds, in addition to infections. Ozonotherapy proves to be a promising alternative, capable of assisting in the tissue healing process, modulating the inflammatory response and preventing the development of infection. To present, analyze and discuss, through a literature review, the use of Ozonated Oils in the repair of the human body and oral cavity systems. SciELO, LILACS, MEDLINE and PubMed databases were consulted, using the following DeCS / MeSH descriptors: “ozonized oil”; “healing”; “ozone therapy”. After crossing, counting and analyzing, 13 studies were selected, according to the theme. Due to the complementary theoretical foundation, 44 articles were included, totaling 57 articles used for the present review. Ozonized Oil therapy has beneficial clinical effects, which include antimicrobial, immunostimulating, analgesic, antipoxic, immunoregulatory and antioxidant action. Topical management of ozone has proven effective for the treatment of foot-and-mouth disease, gingivitis, ulcers and dermatitis, contributing to pain relief and healing. Infectious skin diseases, abscesses, allergic skin diseases, scaly erythema, psoriasis and palmoplantar pustulosis are pathological conditions, the treatment of which benefits from the application of Ozonized Oils. Ozonized Oils have been shown to be effective in the treatment of local infections, when in appropriate formulations and in controlled cases, being a promising therapeutic alternative for tissue repair.

The interruption or failure in this process can trigger the delay in closing the lesion and chronic wounds, in addition to infections. Ozonotherapy proves to be a promising alternative, capable of assisting in the tissue healing process, modulating the inflammatory response and preventing the development of infection. To present, analyze and discuss, through a literature review, the use of Ozonated Oils in the repair of the human body and oral cavity systems. SciELO, LILACS, MEDLINE and PubMed databases were consulted, using the following DeCS / MeSH descriptors: “ozonized oil”; “healing”; “ozone therapy”. After crossing, counting and analyzing, 13 studies were selected, according to the theme. Due to the complementary theoretical foundation, 44 articles were included, totaling 57 articles used for the present review. Ozonized Oil therapy has beneficial clinical effects, which include antimicrobial, immunostimulating, analgesic, antipoxic, immunoregulatory and antioxidant action. Topical management of ozone has proven effective for the treatment of foot-and-mouth disease, gingivitis, ulcers and dermatitis, contributing to pain relief and healing. Infectious skin diseases, abscesses, allergic skin diseases, scaly erythema, psoriasis and palmoplantar pustulosis are pathological conditions, the treatment of which benefits from the application of Ozonized Oils. Ozonized Oils have been shown to be effective in the treatment of local infections, when in appropriate formulations and in controlled cases, being a promising therapeutic alternative for tissue repair.","PeriodicalId":30069,"journal":{"name":"RGO Revista Gaucha de Odontologia","volume":"101 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78105490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ABSTRACT This study aimed to identify the instruments used to measure the quality of life related to oral health (HRQoL) as well as the measures that were adapted for the Portuguese language of Brazil. This is an integrative review whose inclusion criteria were papers in Portuguese, English and Spanish, published and indexed in databases Medline (PubMed) and Virtual Health Library (BVS). One thousand two hundred and sixty papers submitted, fifty-five were considered eligible for review, from which the following information was extracted: instrument; composition; community; sample size; measured domains / dimensions; and author, year, country. Subsequently, the data related to the translation and cultural adaptation processes for the Portuguese language of Brazil were collected in order to evaluate the psychometric properties of each study. The studies of this review show that the HRQoL theme has remained in evidence since the creation of the first instruments and seems not to be close to being exhausted. Of the 36 instruments presented, only 17 articles were identified in the databases assessed for cross-cultural adaptation to Brazilian Portuguese and validation of psychometric properties. Thus, despite the enormous dissemination of instruments, the need for translation, adaptation in the language and analysis of psychometric properties was pointed out in this study.
