Abstract The paper investigates multiple modals such as might could, might would, might can and would might. These are just a few of the core modal combinations with might which are being looked at through the use of iWeb and GloWbE, two corpora of online texts. The research primarily reveals the multiple modals’ frequency in the corpora. It also shows that they are found in both American and British English. In addition, their negation and inversion patterns are displayed.

Abstract The interconnection between language, culture and ethics is a commonplace within the field of translation studies, more particularly, when discussing legal translation. The role of the translator as a communicator and cultural mediator has long been established. However, the question arises how far the legal translator of EU texts can and is entitled to mediate between legal systems and cultures.

Abstract The Lotus Sutra, an important Buddhist classic, is strongly rhetorical with its frequently used binomials (word pairs). This paper studies its two most recent English translations by Watson (1993) and Reeves (2008), the second chapter in particular, and conducts comparative research into the formal, etymological, semantic, sequential and other distinct properties of the binomials and multinomials employed by different translators.

Abstract Legal translation has acquired ever increasing importance within translation studies. The paper focuses on the complexity of legal translations on account of a series of characteristics such as: lack of equivalent terminology, cultural differences, legal style conventions, etc. It turns out that legal translation is a special type that involves mediating between different languages and different cultures and legal systems.

Abstract The present paper reflects our interest and research in the field of marketing translation and addresses the pragmatic nature of title translation for literary works, continuing the analysis of two translation pillars we work with, as previously employed in a study we published on film title translation. As such, “fidelity” and “creativity” would frame the dynamic exchange that authenticates the linguistic particularization of titles as reader-oriented or content-oriented while making use of translation methods and procedures.

Abstract This study aims at investigating the effect of second language in third language learning. It focuses on metalinguistic awareness, which reflects the extent to which learners can use their background languages in the process of third and additional language learning. The study gives insights into the issue of metalinguistic awareness by testing the participants’ vocabulary knowledge in learning English as a foreign language. The number of participants in this study is 30; they are all middle school students who have Arabic/Berber as native languages, French as a second language, and English as a third language. Two translation tasks were designed to find out how participants use their background languages in learning English: translating words in the first task and paragraph translation (from English into Arabic) and think-aloud protocols in the second task. Additionally, a semi-structured interview is conducted with 8 participants. The findings reveal how participants possess greater cognitive control in language acquisition due to language relatedness between the foreign languages they learn.

Abstract The main communicative purpose of Letters of Recommendation (LORs) is to share the writer’s evaluation of the candidate. Every kind of evaluation draws distinctively on resources of grammar. To this end, Martin and White’s (2005) Appraisal System was adopted to examine the mechanisms through which some lecturers of a Ghanaian university express their evaluation in 35 purposively sampled letters. The study concludes that evaluation plays a crucial role in the construal of ideology, voice and stance in the LORs genre, and that the dominance of judgement is a proof of the communicative purpose of the LOR genre.
